Metal-catalyzed coupling methodologies have been employed in the synthesis of the key building block 3'-formyl-2,2':5',2"-terthiophene. Wittig olefinations with this aldehyde have produced five novel beta-styryl-substituted terthiophene monomers. These materials have been fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy, microanalysis, mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystal structure analysis. The results from the UV/visible spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetric investigations are reported.

We report a solution based synthesis of epitaxial thin films of neptunium oxide and plutonium oxide. Actinides represent a challenge to first principle calculations due to features that arise from f orbital interactions. Conventional semi-local density functional theory predicts NpO2 and PuO2 to be metallic, when they are well known insulators. Improvements in theory are dependent on comparison with accurate measurements of material properties, which in turn demand high-quality samples. The high ...

Abstract Millions of people in the United States regularly acquire information from weather forecasts for a wide variety of reasons. The rapid growth in mobile device technology has created a convenient means for people to retrieve this data, and in recent years, mobile weather applications (MWAs) have quickly gained popularity. Research on weather sources, however, has been unable to sufficiently capture the importance of this form of information gathering. As use of these apps continues to grow, ...

Abstract Mucus hypersecretion is a pathological feature of acute inflammatory and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. Exposure to air pollutants can be a cause of pathological mucus overproduction, but mechanisms by which different forms of air pollutants elicit this response are not fully understood. In this study, particulate matter (PM) generated from burning pine wood and other types of biomass was used to determine mechanisms by which these forms of PM stimulate mucin gene expression and ...

Understanding the uranium 5f/6d orbital mixing with oxygen 2p valence orbitals in uranium oxides is important for advancing nuclear technology. Unfortunately, U–O orbital mixing is difficult to probe experimentally. In this manuscript, U–O bonding is evaluated in U3O8 using O K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). To confirm that the O K-edge XAS spectra were correct and did not contain contributions from surface contamination, three different sample types were investigated using three unique ...

The 72-kDa nuclear lamina protein lamin A is synthesized as a 74-kDa farnesylated precursor. Conversion of this precursor to mature lamin A appears to be mediated by a specific endoprotease. Prior studies of overexpressed wild-type and mutant lamin A proteins in cultured cells have indicated that the precursor possesses the typical carboxyl-terminal S -farnesylated, cysteine methyl ester and that farnesylation is required for endoproteolysis to occur. In this report, we describe the synthesis of ...

The lymphocytopaenia in sheep infected with TBF was associated with a significant decrease in the number of cells bearing surface immunoglobulin and a small reduction in the number of T-lymphocytes, suggesting that the lymphocytopaenia induced by C. phagocytophilia results from a depletion in the number of circulating B-lymphocytes.

A survey in August-October 2004 determined the distribution of the Otway Black Snail Victaphanta compacta at three locations in the Otway Ranges. V. compacta was found in Temperate Rainforest (gullies), Wet Forests (ridges) and the ecotone between these two (slope) and was found predominantly around the base of trees and in leaf litter, and fewer were found associated with logs and or the tree trunks.

ABSTRACT: Objective: The goal of this study was to evaluate symptoms of pediatric feeding disorder in a sample of individuals with 3q29 deletion syndrome (3q29Del). Previous research has found that individuals with 3q29Del may experience elevated feeding concerns in early childhood; however, the specificity of these feeding concerns is not well understood. Methods: We compared individuals with 3q29Del (N = 83) with controls (N = 59) using an 11-item survey that assessed commonly reported symptoms associated ...

Abstract Climate change is currently a topic of debate that is discussed not only within the physical science community but also by those in policy. Outside of these communities lies the American public, often not seeking out climate change research, but rather ingesting information interpreted by a third party, most likely through a political lens. Given the increased attention to natural disasters, one area of concern is the possible relationship between climate change and natural disasters. An ...

ABSTRACT Anthracnose, caused by the fungal pathogen Colletotrichum sublineolum Henn. ex. Sacc. and Trotter 1913, is an economically damaging disease of sorghum [ Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] in hot and humid production regions of the world. Control of anthracnose is almost exclusively through the use of genetic resistance. To further elucidate genetic resistance to anthracnose, a recombinant inbred line population derived from the cross of BTx623 (susceptible) and SC748‐5 (resistant) was created. A linkage ...
