We present observations of thermal emission from fifteen transneptunian objects (TNOs) made using the Spitzer Space Telescope. Thirteen of the targets are members of the Classical population: six dynamically hot Classicals, five dynamically cold Classicals, and two dynamically cold inner Classical Kuiper belt objects (KBOs). We fit our observations using thermal models to determine the sizes and albedos of our targets finding that the cold Classical KBOs have distinctly higher visual albedos than ...

We have measured the mid-infrared thermal continua from two Centaurs, inactive (8405) Asbolus and active 95P = (2060) Chiron, and have constrained their geometric albedos, p, and effective radii, R, with the standard thermal model for slow rotators. These are the first such measurements of Asbolus; we find R = 33 ± 2 km and p = 0.12 ± 0.03. This albedo is higher than all of those confidently known for active cometary nuclei. The thermal inertia is comparable to or lower than those of main-belt asteroids, the ...

We present new time-resolved photometric observations of the bright trans-Neptunian object (20000) Varuna and use them to study the rotation period, shape, and color. In observations from 2001 February and April, we find a best-fit two-peaked light curve with period 6.3442 ± 0.0002 hr. The peak-to-peak photometric range in the R band is 0.42 ± 0.02 mag. We find no rotational variation in colors over the 0.45 μm ≤ λ ≤ 0.85 μm wavelength range. From the short, double-peaked period and large amplitude, we suggest ...

We present radiometrically derived V-band geometric albedos and effective radii for 32 Jovian Trojan asteroids, using near-simultaneous mid-infrared and visible observations. We sampled the large end of the group's size distribution, down to a radius of 25 km, using 14 objects in the L4 swarm and 18 in the L5 swarm. We find that the albedo distribution is much narrower than previously derived from IRAS measurements. The Trojans, for the most part, have very similar albedos. The actual mean and standard ...

A search of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) reveals 36 previously unknown high proper motion objects with J < 17 mag. Their red optical colors indicate that 27 are M dwarfs, eight are early-type L dwarfs, and one is a late-type T dwarf. The L dwarfs have J − Ks colors near the extrema of known L dwarfs, indicating that previous surveys for L dwarfs using color as a selection criterion may be biased. Follow-up near-infrared spectroscopy of six dwarfs confirm that ...

(Abridged) Thirty-three objects with possible origins beyond the Kuiper Belt edge, very high inclinations, very large semi-major axes or large perihelion distances were observed to determine their surface colors. All three objects that have been dynamically linked to the inner Oort cloud (Sedna, 2006 SQ372, and 2000 OO67) were found to have ultra-red surfaces (S~25). Ultra-red material is generally associated with rich organics and the low inclination "cold" classical Kuiper Belt objects. The observations ...

The orbits of small Solar System bodies record the history of our Solar System. Here, we report the detection of 2008 LC18, which is a Neptune Trojan in the trailing (L5) Lagrangian region of gravitational equilibrium within Neptune's orbit. We estimate that the leading and trailing Neptune Trojan regions have similarly sized populations and dynamics, with both regions dominated by high-inclination objects. Similar populations and dynamics at both Neptune Lagrangian regions indicate that the Trojans ...

Scott S. Sheppard, Chadwick A. Trujillo,
We present an ultra-deep survey for Neptune Trojans using the Subaru 8.2 m and Magellan 6.5 m telescopes. The survey reached a 50% detection efficiency in the R band at mR = 25.7 mag and covered 49 deg2 of sky. mR = 25.7 mag corresponds to Neptune Trojans that are about 16 km in radius (assuming an albedo of 0.05). A paucity of smaller Neptune Trojans (radii < 45 km) compared with larger ones was found. The brightest Neptune Trojans appear to follow a steep power-law slope (q = 5 ± 1) similar to the brightest ...

I report new time-resolved light curves and determine the rotations and phase functions of several large Kuiper Belt objects, which includes the dwarf planet Eris (2003 UB313). Three of the new sample of 10 trans-Neptunian objects display obvious short-term periodic light curves. (120348) 2004 TY364 shows a light curve which if double-peaked has a period of 11.70 ± 0.01 hr and a peak-to-peak amplitude of 0.22 ± 0.02 mag. (84922) 2003 VS2 has a well-defined double-peaked light curve of 7.41 ± 0.02 hr with ...
