Summary We estimated fusion frequency with respect to coancestry in the bryozoan Celleporella hyalina , whose briefly planktonic sexually produced larvae settle on algal substrata and proceed to form encrusting colonies by iterative budding. Frequency of fusion between paired colonies growing on an artificial substratum was positively correlated with coefficient of relatedness, with allorecognition ability increasing during the early stages of colonial growth after larval settlement. Parents repressed ...

HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) is common, but the lived experience of HAND is not well-understood. In this descriptive qualitative study, we explored how adults with HAND view, manage, and obtain support for cognitive difficulties. We interviewed 25 participants (20% female; median age = 51 years) who were diagnosed with HAND using neuropsychological assessment and a clinical interview. Semistructured interviews, co-developed with community members living with HIV, focused on how cognitive ...

Nicola Morley, Spring Yeh, Sean P. Rigby, Athar Javed, M.R.J. Gibbs,

A new deposition technique involving the dc magnetron sputtering of Fe simultaneously with Ga evaporation has been developed to fabricate thin Fe(1−x)Gax (0<x<0.4) films. Simultaneous sputtering and evaporation has been developed as an alternative to the sputtering of alloy targets, where the need for compositional variation can be hard to address. The new technique allows the freedom of composition that cosputtering would offer, but mitigates the issue of being unable to sputter Ga. ...

Abstract Background The use of small interfering RNA (siRNA) molecules in animals to achieve double-stranded RNA-mediated interference (RNAi) has recently emerged as a powerful method of sequence-specific gene knockdown. As DNA-based expression of short hairpin RNA (shRNA) for RNAi may offer some advantages over chemical and in vitro synthesised siRNA, a number of vectors for expression of shRNA have been developed. These often feature polymerase III (pol. III) promoters of either mouse or human origin. ...

Structural cardiac remodeling after ischemic injury can induce a transition to heart failure from progressive loss of cardiac function. Cellular regenerative therapies are promising but face significant translational hurdles. Tissue extracellular matrix (ECM) holds the necessary environmental cues to stimulate cell-based endogenous myocardial repair pathways and promote adaptive remodeling toward functional recovery. Heart epicardium has emerged as an important anatomic niche for endogenous repair ...

Road traffic gives rise to noise and air pollution exposures, both of which are associated with adverse health effects especially for cardiovascular disease, but mechanisms may differ. Understanding the variability in correlations between these pollutants is essential to understand better their separate and joint effects on human health. The synthesis of composite materials that exhibit inhomogeneities on the sub-micron or nanometer scale using chemical and physical deposition processes is a challenge. Rajesh R. Naik, Sean M. Kirkpatrick, Morley O. Stone,

Coiled-coil proteins are assemblies of two to four α-helices that pack together in a parallel or anti-parallel fashion. Coiled-coil structures can confer a variety of functional capabilities, which include enabling proteins, such as myosin, to function in the contractile apparatus of muscle and non-muscle cells. The TlpA protein encoded by the virulence plasmid of Salmonella is an α-helical protein that forms an elongated coiled-coil homodimer. A number of studies have clearly established the role ...

This article examines the effects of spatial field shifts in ocean acoustic environmental sensitivity analysis. Acoustic sensitivity studies are typically based on comparing acoustic fields computed for a reference environmental model and for a perturbed model in which one or more parameters have been changed. The perturbation to the acoustic field due to the perturbed environment generally includes a component representing a spatial shift of the field (i.e., local field structure remains coherent, ...
