The spectrum of complications emerging in successfully treated HIV-infected patients has dramatically changed since the advent of HAART. Typical AIDS-defining illnesses have been substituted by new comorbid conditions that threaten even those patients who maintain virologic suppression. Proper management of cardiovascular risk, and early diagnosis of AIDS-related and, particularly, non-AIDS-related malignancies (including papilomavirus-related neoplasms) must be introduced into the routine of care. ...

ABSTRACT Hematological disturbances that develop during linezolid treatment are a major concern when linezolid is administered for prolonged periods of time. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influences of pyridoxine, rifampin, and renal function on hematological adverse events. From January 2002 to April 2006, 52 patients received a long-term course of linezolid. Blood cell counts were monitored weekly. Thrombocytopenia was defined as a decrease to <75% of the baseline platelet count, and ...

This paper presents a study of the parallelism of a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) algorithm and its adaptation to a manycore MPPA (Massively Parallel Processor Array) architecture, which gathers 256 cores distributed among 16 clusters. This study focuses on porting hyperspectral image processing into manycore platforms by optimizing their processing to fulfill real-time constraints, fixed by the image capture rate of the hyperspectral sensor. Real-time is a challenging objective for hyperspectral ...

The classification of pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs) subtypes continues generating interest. In 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) proposed considering the immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis of pituitary-specific transcription factors (TF) for their typification. The present study targeted the quantification of pituitary-specific TF (TPIT, PIT-1, SF-1, GATA2, ESR1) gene expression by RT-qPCR to overcome the shortcomings of IHC and to complement it. We analyzed 251 tumors from our collection ...

Lipid A is the bioactive component of lipopolysaccharide, and presents a dynamic structure that undergoes modifications in response to environmental signals. Many of these structural modifications influence Salmonella virulence. This is the case of lipid A hydroxylation, a modification catalyzed by the dioxygenase LpxO. Although it has been established that oxygen is required for lipid A hydroxylation acting as substrate of LpxO in Salmonella, an additional regulatory role for oxygen in lpxO expression ...

microRNAs (miRNAs) are a group of small non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally through their interaction with the 3′ untranslated regions (3′ UTR) of target mRNAs, affecting their stability and/or translation. Therefore, miRNAs regulate biological processes such as signal transduction, cell death, autophagy, metabolism, development, cellular proliferation, and differentiation. Dysregulated expression of microRNAs is associated with infectious diseases, where miRNAs modulate ...

We present a performance evaluation of a non-conventional approach to implement phase noise tolerant optical systems with multilevel modulation formats. The performance of normalized Viterbi-Viterbi carrier phase estimation (V-V CPE) is investigated in detail for circular m-level quadrature amplitude modulation (C-mQAM) signals. The intrinsic property of C-mQAM constellation points with a uniform phase separation allows a straightforward employment of V-V CPE without the need to adapt constellation. ...

Seaport monitoring and management is a significant research area, in which infrastructure automatically collects big data sets that lead the organization in its multiple activities. This extended paper presents the development and implementation at a prototype level of a wireless, low-cost system for the measurement of the electrical bioimpedance of the chest with two channels using the AD5933 in a bipolar electrode configuration to measure impedance pneumography. The measurement device works for impedance measurements ranging from 1 Ω to 1800 Ω. Fifteen volunteers were measured with the prototype. We found that the left hemithorax has higher impedance compared to the right ...

Scene understanding of large-scale 3D point clouds of an outer space is still a challenging task. Compared with simulated 3D point clouds, the raw data from LiDAR scanners consist of tremendous points returned from all possible reflective objects and they are usually non-uniformly distributed. Therefore, its cost-effective to develop a solution for learning from raw large-scale 3D point clouds. In this track, we provide large-scale 3D point clouds of street scenes for the semantic segmentation task. ...

The adipokine Neuregulin 4 (Nrg4) protects against obesity-induced insulin resistance. Here, we analyze how the downregulation of Nrg4 influences insulin action and the underlying mechanisms in adipocytes. Validated shRNA lentiviral vectors were used to generate scramble (Scr) and Nrg4 knockdown (KD) 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Adipogenesis was unaffected in Nrg4 KD adipocytes, but there was a complete impairment of the insulin-induced 2-deoxyglucose uptake, which was likely the result of reduced insulin receptor ...

With simple analytical arguments, we suggest that the subtropical westerly jets, the equatorial easterly winds, the westerly ducts (i.e. regions of westerly winds over the Equator), and the tropical upper tropospheric troughs, are coupled via potential vorticity (PV) dynamics. We suggest that deep tropical convection leads to advective PV fluxes towards the Poles over the subtropical westerly jets, triggering Rossby waves on the jet, and leading to advective PV fluxes towards the Equator when the ...

As the electric companies need to assure the reliability of their services, power line management gains importance during the last years. Many of them rely on LiDAR scanning of their assets to obtain the status of their power line corridors and determine possible risks. In this paper, a novel sevenfold staged pipeline is introduced to classify pylon and wire points and model the conductors. Wire points are subdivided into three categories: shield, common conductor and chain. Pylons of two different ...

Visualization of underground infrastructure in an interactive 3D immersive environment is extremely important for efficient management of city’s infrastructure. This paper describes different geometric modelling approaches to illustrate appropriate visualization of such data. A multimodal prototype has been developed by exploiting different algorithms to render these invisible underground objects as part of an urban model. This prototype has been integrated in an immersive geographic information ...

Insect antennae are sophisticated sensory organs, usually coated with sensory structures responsible for the detection of relevant signals of different modalities coming from the environment. Despite the relevance of the head louse Pediculus humanus capitis as a human parasite, the role of its antennal sensory system in the highly dependent relation established with their hosts has been barely studied. In this work we present a functional description of the antennae of these hematophagous insects ...

In this work, a deeper comprehension of the adsorption phenomena for Cd 2+ and Cu 2+ occurring in mono- and multicomponent systems on an adsorbent material obtained from cedar sawdust was accomplished by using spectroscopic characterization, and computational tools. The adsorbents were prepared by a simple calcination process at 300, 400, and 500 °C or pyrolysis at 300 °C. The experimental results showed that the adsorption capacity of the CS-C-400 adsorbent is higher for Cd 2+ (36 mg g -1 ) than Cu 2+ ( ...

In the past years, the amount of available open spatial data relevant to cities throughout the world has increased exponentially. Many cities, states, and countries have provided or are currently launching the provision of free and open geodata through public data portals, web-services, and APIs that are suitable for urban and smart cities applications. Besides ready to use 3D city models, many free and open LiDAR data sets are available. Several countries provide national LiDAR datasets of varying ...
