In the present study, the wake fields of two full ship models were measured using a two-dimensional (2D) towed underwater particle image velocimetry (PIV) system to identify the flow characteristics around a hull with a high block coefficient. The 2D PIV measurements and reconstructing the three-dimensional (3D) flow field by stacking the 2D measurements were validated and applied to the model ship wakes in a towing tank. The bare hull wake was measured for a very large crude oil carrier (VLCC) model, ...

Purpose.: Glaucoma is the second most frequent cause of visual impairment worldwide. Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) causes glaucomatous optic nerve damage, especially in the primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) subtype. As most previous studies on IOP genetics were analyses of glaucomatous families, a study of general pedigrees will provide additional information on genetic etiology. Methods.: This work was part of the GENDISCAN study (Gene Discovery for Complex Traits in Isolated Large Families ...

The present study aims to assess test uncertainty assessment method of nominal wake field measurement by a Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (SPIV) system in a towing tank. The systematic uncertainty of the SPIV system was estimated from repeated uniform flow measurements. In the uniform flow measurement case, time interval between image frames and uniform flow speed were varied to examine the effects of particle displacement and flow around the SPIV system on the systematic standard uncertainty. ...

A 20-Gb/s current-mode optical receiver is realized in a 0.13-μm CMOS process, which consists of a common-gate transimpedance amplifier (TIA) with on-chip transformers, a six-stage postamplifier (PA) with an offset cancellation network, and an output buffer. The transformer-based inductive peaking technique is exploited in the TIA to isolate the parasitic capacitances at high-impedance nodes and, hence, to enlarge the bandwidth. The PA incorporates source degeneration and interleaving active feedback ...

ABSTRACT Herewith we report the expression and screening of microbial enzymes without involving cloning procedures. Computationally predicted putative ω-transaminase (ω-TA) genes were PCR amplified from the bacterial colonies and expressed in a cell-free protein synthesis system for subsequent analysis of their enzymatic activity and substrate specificity. Through the cell-free expression analysis of the putative ω-TA genes, a number of enzyme-substrate pairs were identified in a matter of hours. ...

A mixed polydiacetylenes (PDAs) vesicle with a phospholipid unit is functionalized by entrapping fluorescent benzoxazole (BZ) molecules inside the PDA vesicles. Upon photo-polymerization and heat-treatment of the self-assembled vesicles, a weak red fluorescence can be observed. Excitation of BZ molecules enables the amplification of PDA vesicle fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) to more than four times that of the direct excitation of red-phase PDA vesicles. The backbone of the PDA vesicles ...

In the present study, a simple magnetic-particle recycling strategy was developed for harvest of the oleaginous microalga Chlorella sp. KR-1. The method entails the flocculation of microalgal cells and bare-Fe3O4 magnetic particles (bMP) by electrostatic attraction and the subsequent recovery of the bMP from the harvested flocs by electrostatic repulsion below and above the isoelectric points (IEP), respectively. For 10 recycles, the bMP showed 94–99% and 90–97% harvest and recovery efficiencies, ...

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness, and the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) defect is the early sign of the glaucomatous optic nerve damage. To evaluate the RNFL, segmentation of the optic nerve head on the RNFL photograph should be the first step. This paper presents segmentation of optic nerve head using warping and random sample consensus (RANSAC). Sensitivity and positive predictability of the proposed method were 91% and 78% respectively.

The organic layers are thin solid films with a thickness from a few nano meters to a few tenths nano meter, respectively. Redesign or modification of the cellular physiology requires a quantitatively well-controlled expression system known as the "tunable expression." Although the modification of promoters demonstrates the great impact on the translation efficiency, it is difficult to detect the proper variants required for tunable expression. The 5'-untranslated region (UTR), however, can be an important target for tunable expressions because the ribosome binding affinity is directly modulated by the sequence variants ...

The direct emission of circularly polarized (CP) light improves the efficiency of an organic light-emitting diode and characterizes the secondary structure of proteins. In most cases, CP light is generated from a luminescent layer containing chiral characteristics, thereby generating only one kind of CP light in an entire device. Here, we propose direct CP light emissions using a twisted achiral conjugate polymer without any chiral dopant as an emitting layer (EML). The twisted structure is induced ...

Detonated nanodiamonds (NDs) exhibit remarkable photocatalytic activity towards the hydrogen gas generation upon 532 nm laser pulse irradiation. Hydrogenation dramatically increases the quantum yield, suggesting that hydrogen-terminated sites work as electron reservoirs. NDs can also be used as effective photocatalysts to reduce graphene oxide. The resulting composites exhibit high and stable photocurrent generation upon visible light irradiation.

Pretilt angle measurable by using the conventional crystal rotation method is limited to about 0°–20° and 70°–90°. We propose a method by which we can measure the pretilt angle by using the crystal rotation method even if the pretilt angle is between 20° and 70°. In this method, the determination of a pretilt angle is achieved by finding the rotation angles where transmittances are maximum and minimum in the periodic transmittance characteristics obtained with the variation of rotation angle.
