We suggest and theoretically explore a possibility to strongly enhance thermal radiation of hot bodies using an infrared hyperlens. The hyperbolic metamaterial of the hyperlens converts emitter's near fields into propagating waves which are efficiently irradiated from the hyperlens surface. Thus, with the hyperlens, emitter's spectral radiance goes well beyond the black-body limit for the same emitter in free space. Although the hyperlens can be kept at a much lower temperature than the emitter, ...

An electrically controlled nonreciprocal electromagnetic band-gap material is proposed and studied. The new material is a periodic three-dimensional regular lattice of small magnetized ferrite spheres. In this paper, we consider plane electromagnetic waves in this medium and design an analytical model for the material parameters. An analytical solution for plane-wave reflection from a planar interface is also presented. In the proposed material, a new electrically controlled stop band appears for ...

Plane-wave reflection from regular arrays of small particles positioned very near to an ideally conducting plane is theoretically studied. It is found that extremely thin (in wavelength) coverings with resonant properties can be realized if the array particles are small dipole antennas loaded by bulk inductances. This offers a possibility to realize an artificial magnetic conductor as a thin covering over conducting bodies. Dependencies of the resonance frequency and the resonant curve width on geometrical ...

An analytical theory of electromagnetic waves in artificial media formed by a rectangular lattice of thin ideally conducting cylinders using the local field approach is developed. As a result, the transcendental dispersion equation is obtained in closed form and solved numerically. Typical dispersion curves are calculated. Using these results, the reflection problem from an interface between a half space of wire medium and free space is solved for plane-wave excitation. In the low-frequency approximation ...

Abstract The technique of frozen matrix‐assisted laser ablation coupled with resonance‐enhanced multiphoton ionization and reflectron time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry was used to detect intact organic molecules directly from solutions. When frozen at the temperature of liquid nitrogen, the matrices of interest were ablated by a pulsed CO 2 single‐mode laser. The analyte molecules emerging from the ablated plume were then ionized by a tunable XeCl excimer laser‐pumped dye laser and analysed with ...

Spontaneous emission enhancement is theoretically investigated in multiperiodic metal-dielectric multilayers (multiperiodic hyperboliclike metamaterials or photonic hypercrystals) where the unit cell consists of two layers of different dielectrics alternating with identical metallic layers. It is shown that the Purcell factor in such multiperiodic structures exceeds the Purcell factor in ordinary periodic hyperbolic or plasmonic metamaterials by a factor of 4, which in general makes it possible to ...

Electromagnetic excitation of two-dimensional (2-D) arrays of bianisotropic particles by plane waves is considered. Arrays (grids) are assumed to be infinite and the particles to be small compared to the wavelength, so that the dipole approximation is possible. The electromagnetic interaction between all the particles changes the properties of these particles (in particular, chiral and omega particles are studied). The analytical model under consideration allows one to express the electric and magnetic ...

Hyperlens is a metamaterial structure initially proposed for magnifying imaging of subwavelength scattering objects. Here, we show that a wire-medium (WM) hyperlens can be used also for significant enhancement of radiation from small sources to free space and that this enhancement holds in the ultra-wide frequency band. We investigate how the divergence of metal wires modifies the radiated power of a dipole, comparing with an array of parallel wires, and investigate the impact of other design parameters. ...

The authors study the possibility of utilising a loaded wire medium as an artificial material for a beam shaping element in base station antenna applications. The wires in the lattice are loaded with a proper capacitive impedance to produce a structure effectively operating as a dielectric lens at the UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) frequency range. It is proven with full-wave simulations that the interpretation of a finite-size wire lattice as a dielectric lens is physically sound, ...

The methodology for prescriptive maintenance of complex technical systems is presented. The proposed methodology is based on a hybrid physics-based and data-driven modelling of complex systems. This approach integrates traditional physics-based simulation techniques such as finite-element modelling, finite-volume modelling, bond-graph modelling and data-driven models, with machine learning algorithms. Combined implementation of the both approaches results in the development of a set of reliable, ...

In this paper the electromagnetic properties of bianisotropic electromagnetic crystals are studied. The crystals are assumed to be rectangular lattices of perfectly conducting helicoidal spirals. The analytical theory of dispersion and plane-wave reflection refers to the case when the spiral step and the radius are small compared to the wavelengths in the host medium. The periods of the lattice can be arbitrary. Explicit closed-form expressions are derived for the effective material parameters of ...

Abstract Devices that form an optical image with a subwavelength resolution in real time – metalenses – are considered. Such devices either operate with near optical fields or convert near fields into wave fields. As a result, the spatial resolution of these devices is not limited by the diffraction limit. At the same time, the image is formed at a considerable distance from the object, which distinguishes near-field metalenses from the instruments used in near-field probe microscopy. Metalenses are ...

We deal with trace formulas for half-line Schrödinger operators with long-range potentials. We generalize the Buslaev–Faddeev trace formulas to the case of square integrable potentials. The exact relation between the number of the trace formulas and the number of integrable derivatives of the potential is also given. The main results are optimal.

Blade damage accounts for a substantial part of all failure events occurring at gas-turbine-engine power plants. Current operation and maintenance (O&M) practices typically use preventive maintenance approaches with fixed intervals, which involve high costs for repair and replacement activities, and substantial revenue losses. The recent development and evolution of condition-monitoring techniques and the fact that an increasing number of turbines in operation are equipped with online monitoring ...

Abstract In this Letter artificial media formed by dense arrays of parallel conducting wires are considered. A simple analytical model for the effective permittivity is derived from quasi‐static considerations. The result gives a formula for the permittivity in terms of the geometrical parameters and the frequency. The analysis covers lossy and loaded wires as well. The phenomena that lead to negative permittivity values are discussed. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 35: ...

We review the basic physics and applications of a special class of planar metamaterials, often called metasurfaces, which are composed of optically thin and densely packed planar arrays of resonant or nearly resonant subwavelength elements. Electromagnetic properties and functionalities of such metasurfaces are defined by the structure and specific features of the subwavelength elements and their coupling type and strength, and they are often influenced by an underlying substrate. Metasurfaces may ...

Authors demonstrate numerically the magnification of subwavelength field pattern using a wire medium slab operating in the canalization regime. The magnifying slab is implemented by radially enlarging the distance between adjacent wires, and the operational frequency is tuned to coincide with the Fabry-Pérot resonance condition. The near-field pattern of a complex-shaped source is canalized over an electrical distance corresponding roughly to three wavelengths (3λ), and the pattern details are magnified ...

Perspirocyclopropanated bicyclopropylidene (6) was prepared in three steps from 7-cyclopropylidenedispiro[2.0.2.1]heptane (4) (24% overall) or, more efficiently, through dehalogenative coupling of 7,7-dibromo[3]triangulane (15) (82%). This type of reductive dimerization turned out to be successful for the synthesis of (E)- and (Z)-bis(spiropentylidene) 14 (67%) and even of the "third-generation" spirocyclopropanated bicyclopropylidene 17 (17% overall from 15). Whereas the parent bicyclopropylidene 1 dimerized ...
