Nanomaterials properties are deeply dependent on several features, being easily tuned according to its composition, shape, and dimensionality. Graphene, a two-dimensional (2D) material has outstanding properties that may be tailored by turning its shape to 3D conformations, similar to crumpled paper ball-like structures. Thus, some drawbacks related to graphene restacking could be avoided, besides enlightening a way to explore the properties of graphene-based materials. Herein, we synthesize crumpled ...

Healthcare represents a key issue for management in every country. A fundamental problem affects almost every healthcare system: the trade-off between the need to deliver effective healthcare services and the need to control expenses and to ensure the overall sustainability of the system. This problem is a clear expression of management complexity in healthcare systems. With the purpose of searching opportunities for reconciling standardization and differentiation in healthcare management, this ...

The fungi Nomuraea rileyi and Isaria tenuipes (=Paecilomyces tenuipes) are ecologically obligate, widespread pathogens of lepidopterans. Bioassays were carried out to evaluate the activity of oil-suspended conidia of N. rileyi and I. tenuipes against larvae of Spodoptera frugiperda, Spodoptera exigua, Helicoverpa zea, and Heliothis virescens. The tests consisted of two bioassay sets. In the first set, conidia of N. rileyi and I. tenuipes were suspended in water+Tween 80, and in vegetable (canola, soybean) ...

Stretching is used to modify muscle length. However, its effects seem to be temporary. There is evidence in animal models that strengthening in a lengthened position may induce long lasting changes in muscle length. The objective of this study was to compare changes in hamstrings flexibility, peak torque angle and stretch tolerance after two training programs: stretching and strengthening in a lengthened position. Forty-five subjects with tight hamstrings were randomly assigned into three groups: ...

Abstract This work compares the dynamic mechanical behavior of piassava fiber–reinforced polyester composites with the behavior of the neat resin matrix. The results obtained confirm previous data showing that the interface of piassava/polyester composites is stronger than the usual interfaces found when untreated lignocellulosic fibers are incorporated into common polyester matrices. This behavior was attributed to silica-rich protrusions found at the fibers' surface that aid to anchor the resin ...

The tensile mechanical properties of piassava fibers, as well as their chemical composition and morphological aspects, are reported. The values obtained showed that piassava has a mechanical behavior and chemical composition comparable to that of coir fibers. The difficulties related with a reliable way of measuring the true elastic modulus of these slender fibers are discussed and a simple correction of the experimental data is presented. As main characteristic surface features piassava fibers ...

This randomised phase II study was performed in order to evaluate the effectiveness of a weekly chemotherapy regimen in advanced prostatic carcinoma patients (stage D2) refractory to hormonal therapy. Seventy-two cases were studied: they were randomised in a 2:1 ratio to receive either epirubicin (30 mg m-2 weekly) or doxorubicin (25 mg m-2 weekly); 48 patients received epirubicin and 24 received doxorubicin. After 12 courses of chemotherapy, the 45 evaluable patients in the epirubicin arm showed a ...

Digestate - the wet by-product of the anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic waste - is composed of a mixture of residual organic matter, microbial biomass and inorganic compounds. Although digestate is rich in nutrients, the occurrence of high levels of salinity and soluble ammoniacal nitrogen (N-NH4+) limits its direct exploitation as organic fertilizer and imposes a complex disposal. This study assesses at laboratory-scale the potential of Direct Contact Membrane Distillation (DCMD) for the separation ...

Cotton gin trash (CGT) was pyrolyzed at different temperatures (500C, 600C, 700C, and 800C) using an externally heated batch reactor. The average yields of output products (solid/char, liquid/bio-oil, and gas) were determined. The heating value (HV) of CGT was measured to be around 15.5 MJ kg-1. Gas yield increased while char yield decreased as temperature was increased. The maximum char yield of 38 wt% was obtained after 30 min of pyrolysis at 500C. The char had the largest fraction of the energy output ( ...

Wetting balance tests of copper sheets submerged in tin solder baths were carried out in a completely automatic wetting balance. Wetting curves were examined for three different values of sheet thickness and four different solder bath temperatures. Most of the wetting curves showed a distorted shape relative to that of a standard curve, preventing calculation of important wetting parameters, such as the wetting rate and the wetting force. The wetting tests showed that the distortion increased for ...

This study begins with a complete characterization of the licuri fiber as an alternative reinforcement to polymeric composites. It then investigates the development of a composite laminate made solely from licuri fibers to understand the behavior of the fiber when impregnated in thermosetting resin (orthophthalic unsaturated polyester resin). Hybrid materials in which reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is decorated with Au nanoparticles (rGO-Au NPs) were obtained by the in situ reduction of GO and AuCl4(-)(aq) by ascorbic acid. On laser excitation, rGO could be oxidized as a result of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) excitation in the Au NPs, which generates activated O2 through the transfer of SPR-excited hot electrons to O2 molecules adsorbed from air. The SPR-mediated catalytic oxidation of p-aminothiophenol (PATP) to p,p'-dimercaptoazobenzene ( ...

Typical plant‐level data sets do not report quantities. This paper shows that estimating mark‐ups (price‐cost ratio) in product‐differentiated industries using deflated sales to proxy quantity is not appropriate due to unobserved price heterogeneity. This paper presents an econometric model for estimating mark‐ups that controls for unobserved prices. The model shows that ignoring price heterogeneity results in mark‐up estimates that converge to one, whatever the value of the true price‐cost ratio. ...
