As part of our efforts aimed at searching for new antiparasitic agents, 2-alkylmercaptoethyl-1,1-bisphosphonate derivatives were synthesized and evaluated against Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiologic agent of Chagas disease, and Toxoplasma gondii, the responsible agent for toxoplasmosis. Many of these sulfur-containing bisphosphonates were potent inhibitors against the intracellular form of T. cruzi, the clinically more relevant replicative form of this parasite, and tachyzoites of T. gondii targeting ...

Abstract Purpose Despite the industrial and scientific acceptance of life cycle assessment (LCA) to determine the environmental performance of products, none of the existing information on LCA provides explicit and clear recommendations on how to apply it when evaluating bio-based fertilizer (BBF) production systems. This situation affects the reliability of the results and causes confusion among practitioners, technology developers, and other stakeholders. Here, we first present the practitioners’ ...

The lung immune prognostic index (LIPI) has been proposed as a new categorical blood-based biomarker to select advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients for anti-programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) or programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) therapy. In this study, we investigate for the first time to the best of our knowledge the prognostic and predictive utility of the LIPI in a multicenter nivolumab monotherapy-based cohort. We retrospectively analyzed the influence of the baseline LIPI on overall ...

In this work, a fully nonparametric geostatistical approach to estimate threshold exceeding probabilities is proposed. To estimate the large-scale variability (spatial trend) of the process, the nonparametric local linear regression estimator, with the bandwidth selected by a method that takes the spatial dependence into account, is used. A bias-corrected nonparametric estimator of the variogram, obtained from the nonparametric residuals, is proposed to estimate the small-scale variability. Finally, ...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widely studied in environmental matrices, such as air, water, soil and sediment, because of their toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. Because of these properties, the environmental agencies of developed countries have listed sixteen PAHs as priority pollutants. Few countries have limits for these compounds for ambient air, but they only limit emissions from stationary and mobile sources and occupational areas. There are several studies to specifically ...

The current study aims to provide nonparametric estimators of the conditional variance and the dependence structure of a heteroscedastic spatial process. When assuming zero mean along the domain, the approximation of the variance can be addressed by linear smoothing of the squared observations. Then, the variogram can be estimated from the standardized data. In the presence of a non-zero deterministic trend, we suggest a modification of the latter method that involves the residuals obtained from ...

We analyze here a model for an adsorbate system composed of many layers by extending a theoretical approach used to describe pattern formation on a monolayer of adsorbates with lateral interactions. The approach shows, in addition to a first order phase transition in the first layer, a transition in the second layer together with evidence of a "cascade" of transitions if more layers are included. The transition profiles, showing a staircase structure, corroborate this picture. The adsorption isotherm ...

Results are reported from a search for physics beyond the standard model in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, focusing on the signature with a single, isolated, high-transverse-momentum lepton (electron or muon), energetic jets, and large missing transverse momentum. Abstract The mechanical switching of ferroelectric domains is achieved in PbZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 thin films obtained by the sol‐gel method for thicknesses up to 200 nm. The dielectric polarization can be switched when a force higher than a given threshold value in the order of some μNewtons is applied with the tip of an atomic force microscope. This threshold is determined as a function of the thickness of the films, and local hysteresis loops are recorded under mechanical stress. The possibility of ...

Although macrophages (Mϕ) maintain intestinal immune homoeostasis, there is not much available information about their subset composition, phenotype and function in the human setting. Human intestinal Mϕ (CD45+HLA-DR+CD14+CD64+) can be divided into subsets based on the expression of CD11c, CCR2 and CX3CR1. Monocyte-like cells can be identified as CD11chighCCR2+CX3CR1+ cells, a phenotype also shared by circulating CD14+ monocytes. On the contrary, their Mϕ-like tissue-resident counterparts display ...

Achieving large magnetoelectric coupling is of interest for memory and communication applications. In multiferroic hybrid structures (combining ferroelectric and magnetic materials) in the presence of a magnetoelectric coupling, the ferroelectric properties can be modulated by a magnetic field. This is called the direct magnetoelectric effect. Measuring the ferroelectric properties in multiferroic materials most commonly requires using metallic electrodes that sandwich the ferroelectric material. ...

Coaches, footballers and researchers agree that offensive transitions are one of the most important moments in football today. In a sport where defense over attack dominates, with low scores on the scoreboard, the importance of these actions from the offensive point of view becomes very important. Therefore, the objectives set out in the present investigation have been two: first, by means of a proportion analysis and the application ...

Abstract Background Major colorectal surgery usually requires a hospital stay of more than 12 days. Inadequate pain management, intestinal dysfunction and immobilisation are the main factors associated with delay in recovery. Methods This prospective study, performed at 12 Spanish hospitals in 2008 and 2009, involved 300 patients. All patients underwent elective ...
