In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, ...

Biological degradation of methane by an adapted consortium in steady state was compared in two reactor configurations (stirred tank, STR and trickling bed, TBR) with and without 10% (v/v) silicone oil. Silicone oil addition increased the methane average volumetric elimination capacity by 41% in STR up to 106 g m−3 h−1 and by 131% in TBR up to 51 g m−3 h−1. Specific elimination capacities showed higher degradation (69% in STR and 98% in TBR) suggesting increased bioavailability. The elimination capacities ...

This work describes the growth of filamentous fungi in biofilters for the degradation of hydrophobic VOCs. The study system was n-hexane and Fusarium solani B1. The system is mathematically described and the main physical, kinetic data and morphological parameters were obtained by independent experiments and validated with data from laboratory experiments. The model describes the increase in the transport area by the growth of the filamentous cylindrical mycelia and its relation with n-hexane elimination ...

Abstract Fungal biofilters have been recently studied as an alternative to the bacterial systems for the elimination of hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOC). Fungi foster reduced transport limitation of hydrophobic VOCs due to their hydrophobic surface and extended gas exchange area associated to the hyphal growth. Nevertheless, one of their principal drawbacks is their slow growth, which is critical in the start‐up of fungal biofilters. This work compares the use of different carbon sources ( ...

Abstract BACKGROUND: An alkaline mineral medium (pH ≈ 10) was used in a previous study to enhance the absorption rate of hydrogen sulfide in a biofiltration process where an alkaliphilic sulfo‐oxidizing bacterial consortium was deployed. In this work the same mineral media and bacterial consortium were used to assess a biotrickling filter performance during the treatment of low gaseous concentrations of carbon disulfide and ethanethiol. RESULTS: The alkalinity of the mineral medium increased the solubility ...

The Ku, Zaap, and Maloob structures consist of an arcuate series of fold-thrust structures, which change orientation from approximately east-west to north-northwest–south-southeast along a structural salient in the offshore Campeche Bay, Mexico. The structures are related to a series of thrust faults, which merge into the Maloob thrust. The Ku, Zaap, and Maloob fields located on these structures together constitute an important complex of fields with proven remaining reserves of approximately 1850 ...

The moisture content of biofilter media is a key parameter for its adequate performance. Control of moisture requires a better understanding of the drying of the support due to changes in inlet air temperature and relative humidity and from metabolic heat production by pollutant oxidation. Biofiltration of hydrophobic volatile pollutants is intrinsically limited by poor transfer of the pollutants from the gaseous to the liquid biotic phase, where biodegradation occurs. This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of silicone oil for enhancing the transport and subsequent biodegradation of hexane by the fungus Fusarium solani in various bioreactor configurations. Silicone oil was first selected among various solvents for its biocompatibility, nonbiodegradability, and good partitioning ...

The use of an organic solvent can allow to increase the mass transfer, and thereby biodegradation, of hydrophobic gaseous pollutants. The biodegradation of hexane by a Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain was thus optimized in a two phase partitioning bioreactor (TPPB). Silicone oil was first selected among various organic solvents based on its biocompatibility and resistance to P. aeruginosa and its high affinity for hexane (air-organic partitioning of 0.0034). A silicone oil based TPPB was then compared ...

RESULTS: When the process was operated at an EBRT of 3.7 min and an IL of 100 g m $_{\rm {reactor}}^{-3}$ h −1 , the weekly addition of MM from 6.8 to 13.6 mL MM L $_{\rm {vermiculite}}^{-1}$ resulted in fluctuacting dynamics of ECs and spore emission. ABSTRACT A biofiltration system inoculated with the mold Paecilomyces variotii CBS115145 showed a toluene elimination capacity (EC) of around 250 g/m 3 of biofilter/h, which was higher than the values usually reported for bacteria. P. variotii assimilated m - and p -cresols but not the o isomer. Initial toluene hydroxylation occurred both on the methyl group and through the p -cresol pathway. These results were corroborated by detecting benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, and p -cresol as volatile intermediates. ...

Bacterial biofilters usually exhibit a high microbial diversity and robustness, while fungal biofilters have been claimed to better withstand low moisture contents and pH values, and to be more efficient coping with hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, there are only few systematic evaluations of both biofiltration technologies. High-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity is associated with increased cancer risk. Long-term feeding with HFD increases the concentration of the saturated fatty acid palmitic acid (PA) in the hypothalamus. We previously showed that, in hypothalamic neuronal cells, exposure to PA inhibits the autophagic flux, which is the whole autophagic process from the synthesis of the autophagosomes, up to their lysosomal fusion and degradation. However, the mechanism by which PA impairs autophagy in hypothalamic neurons ...
