Characterizing the electric energy curve can improve the energy efficiency of existing buildings without any structural change and is the basis for controlling and optimizing building performance. Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques show much potential due to their accuracy and malleability in the field of pattern recognition, and using these models it is possible to adjust the building services in real time. Thus, the objective of this paper is to determine the AI technique that best forecasts ...

It is linked to findings for business management such that it makes organizations grow faster, increases efficiency, enhances organizational performance, improves communication and a greater sense of team and community, and is related positively to employee's attitudes towards their work. Consequently, more employers are encouraging the expression of spirituality in the workplace as a way to boost loyalty and increase morale. However, there ...

A bstract : Astrocytes and serotoninergic neurons play a role in central nervous system (CNS) development, probably through serotonin (5HT) stimulation of the glial 5HT 1A receptor. Activation of 5HT 1A receptors causes the release of S‐100β, a glial derived growth factor. In vitro , astrocytes are profoundly altered by chronic maternal ethanol exposure (CMEE). CMEE is also associated with reduced 5HT brain levels and abnormal development of the serotoninergic system. In the present study we analyzed the ...

The effect of iron on the activity of the plasma membrane H+-ATPase (PMA) from corn root microsomal fraction (CRMF) was investigated. In the presence of either Fe2+ or Fe3+ (100–200 μM of FeSO4 or FeCl3, respectively), 80–90% inhibition of ATP hydrolysis by PMA was observed. Half-maximal inhibition was attained at 25 μM and 50 μM for Fe2+ and Fe3+, respectively. Inhibition of the ATPase activity was prevented in the presence of metal ion chelators such as EDTA, deferoxamine or o-phenanthroline in the ...

The storage of maize seeds for short periods of time under improper, dry (60 °C, 2 d), and humid (40 °C, 6 d, 100 % relative humidity) conditions causes a significant decrease in viability. This decrease occurs concomitantly with breakage of DNA. When embryo axes from these seeds are put to germinate, reduction in DNA synthesis capacity can be observed. The treatment of seeds affects polymerase activity differently since recovery is faster after humid treatment than after dry treatment and appears to ...

Vaccination, being able to prevent millions of cases of infectious diseases around the world every year, is the most effective medical intervention ever introduced. However, immunosenescence makes vaccines less effective in providing protection to older people. Abstract Biological communities are intrinsically dynamic, with species and interactions changing over time. However, the temporal dynamics of species interaction networks is usually assessed using independent ‘snapshot’ networks, which may provide an incomplete representation of ecological processes. The use of temporal multilayer networks, where networks (i.e. layers) are formally interconnected via interlayer links, can circumvent such limitation, allowing for a more realistic characterization ...
