Combustion characteristics of n-heptane, a surrogate for hydrocarbon diesel, methyl decanoate, a surrogate for biodiesel, and dimethyl ether, a fuel that can be derived from bio-feedstocks, are investigated with a homogeneous constant-pressure reactor model and a homogeneous-charge compression–ignition engine thermodynamic simulation model, with focus on two variables: ignition delay and NO formation, under conditions of varying oxygen concentration. Primary graft dysfunction (PGD) after lung transplantation causes significant morbidity and mortality. We aimed to determine the role of cytokines and chemokines in PGD. This is a multicenter case-control study of PGD in humans. A Luminex analysis was performed to determine plasma levels of 25 chemokines and cytokines before and at 6, 24, 48 and 72 h following allograft reperfusion in 25 cases (grade 3 PGD) and 25 controls (grade 0 PGD). Biomarker profiles were evaluated using a multivariable logistic ...

This paper presents a computational study of column loss scenarios for typical multi-story steel buildings with perimeter moment frames and composite steel-concrete floors. Two prototype buildings (three-story and ten-story) were represented using three-dimensional nonlinear finite element models and explicit dynamic analysis was used to simulate instantaneous loss of a first-story column. Twelve individual column loss scenarios were investigated in the three-story building and four in the ten-story ...

The plasma proteome has a wide dynamic range of protein concentrations and is dominated by a few highly abundant proteins. Discovery of novel cancer biomarkers using proteomics is particularly challenging because specific biomarkers are expected to be low abundance proteins with normal blood concentrations of low nanograms per milliliter or less. Conventional, one- and two-dimensional proteomic methods including 2D PAGE, 2D DIGE, LC-MS/MS, and LC/LC-MS/MS do not have the capacity to consistently ...

Abstract Background Typhoid fever has been endemic on the island nation of Samoa (2016 population, 195 979) since the 1960s and has persisted through 2019, despite economic development and improvements in water supply and sanitation. Methods Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi isolates from the 2 hospitals with blood culture capability and matched patient demographic and clinical data from January 2008 through December 2019 were analyzed. We report persistent severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection in a patient with HIV/AIDS; the virus developed spike N terminal domain and receptor binding domain neutralization resistance mutations. Our findings suggest that immunocompromised patients can harbor emerging variants of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.

Abstract Background The World Health Organization recommends vaccines for prevention and control of typhoid fever, especially where antimicrobial-resistant typhoid circulates. In 2018, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) implemented a typhoid conjugate vaccine (TCV) campaign. The campaign targeted all children aged 9 months through 14 years within NMMC boundaries (approximately 320 000 children) over 2 vaccination phases. The phase 1 campaign occurred from 14 July 2018 through 25 August 2018 ( ...

Purpose of review Primary graft dysfunction is the major determinant of early morbidity and mortality after lung transplantation. Survivors of primary graft dysfunction have a protracted recovery and worse long-term mortality in ensuing years. Furthermore, primary graft dysfunction survivors may have a greater risk of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome. Early studies of primary graft dysfunction often defined the disease differently. The resultant difficulty in synthesizing conclusions spurred the ...

Typhoid fever caused by infection with Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serotype Typhi ( S . Typhi), an important public health problem in many low- and middle-income countries, is transmitted by ingestion of water or food contaminated by feces or urine from individuals with acute or chronic S . Typhi carriers (shedding for ≥12 months) harbor infection in their gallbladder wherein preexisting pathologies, particularly cholelithiasis, provide an environment that fosters ...

Hazardous fuels reduction treatments often reduce the likelihood of undesirable fire behavior (e.g. crown fire) through some combination of tree thinning and surface fuel reduction. However, fuels treatment effectiveness declines over time as fuels re-accumulate and new tree cohorts of trees establish and grow. Fuels treatment longevity therefore depends in part on post treatment tree regeneration rates, which vary depending on characteristics of sites and treatments as well as on stand composition. ...

In coastal and estuarine environments, near-surface salinity varies significantly in space and time. As absolute salinity and salinity gradients are central to many physical and ecological processes in these environments, reliable and consistent salinity estimates are a priority for marine research and application communities. Satellite remote sensing has a great potential to meet this need, yet sensors and algorithms designed to monitor open ocean salinity are typically ill-suited for high resolution ...

Bladder cancer is the fifth most common type of cancer in the USA, with over 70,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Treatment often involves invasive surgical therapies, as chemotherapy alone is often ineffective and associated with high recurrence rates. Identification of estrogen receptor-β (ERβ) in up to 75 % of urinary tumors raises the question of whether this receptor could be targeted to effectively treat bladder cancer. In this study, a panel of five bladder cancer cell lines representing a ...

This study examines an ethnographically-collected set of social media posts from 5 applications in order to understand the rhetorical functions of something we call "metacommunicative" hashtags (e.g., #PackersGottaWinThisOne, #thisweddingisawesome). Modern web clickstream data consists of long, high-dimensional sequences of multivariate events, making it difficult to analyze. Following the overarching principle that the visual interface should provide information about the dataset at multiple levels of granularity and allow users to easily navigate across these levels, we identify four levels of granularity in clickstream analysis: patterns, segments, sequences and events. We present an analytic pipeline consisting of three stages: pattern ...

Restoration of pine forests has become a priority for managers who are beginning to embrace ideas of highly heterogeneous forest structures that potentially encourages high levels of regeneration. Treatment longevity was assessed as return time to within 10% of pre-treatment predicted ...

Leukotriene B4 (LTB4) is a lipid inflammatory mediator derived from membrane phospholipids by the sequential actions of cytosolic phospholipase A2 (PLA2), 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) and leukotriene A4 (LTA4) hydrolase.
