Serum deoxythymidine kinase (TK) was measured in 15 patients with the acute type of adult T-cell leukemia (ATL), in 4 with chronic ATL, in 10 with lymphoma type ATL, in 9 with pre-ATL, in 11 with human T-cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) associated with myelopathy (HAM) and in 19 HTLV-I carriers. All these patients were positive for anti-HTLV antibody. The level of TK in pretreatment serum was highest in acute ATL (15.6–1600 U/1, median 107 U/1). It was elevated in chronic ATL (5.4–55.0 U/1, median ...

Abnormalities of p53 mRNA in adult T‐cell leukemia (ATL) were analyzed using reverse transcription‐polymerase chain reaction‐single strand conformation polymorphism analysis. Mutations were present in two of 12 ATL patients studied, but not in 3 cell lines immortalized by human T cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV‐1) infection in vitro. Direct sequencing analysis of the p53 gene from these two patients revealed missense point mutations at codon 153 (arginine to histidine) or codon 220 (cysteine to tyrosine), ...

Abstract Two distinct diseases, adult T‐cell leukemia (ATL) and HTLV‐1‐associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), develop in a minor population of HTLV‐1 carriers. We examined the relationship between the viral genome dose in the peripheral‐blood mononuclear cells and the serological response in HTLV‐1 carriers and patients with HAM/TSP. The antibody titer to HTLV‐1 gag and env proteins, as well as the frequency of an antibody response to viral protein p40 tax and the titer, increased ...

Recently, the chromosome 14q11 anomaly has been reported to be specific to adult T-cell leukemia (ATL), and this anomaly has also been confirmed in the preleukemic state of adult T-cell leukemia (pre-ATL) patients. Because the cytogenetic abnormality at the stage of human T-cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) carrier remains uncertain, we performed cytogenetic studies of lymphocytes stimulated with phytohemagglutinin in three HTLV-I carriers and three non-HTLV-I carriers in an ATL family. As a result, ...

Twenty‐three cases of non‐Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) were analyzed for expression of ras genes by in situ hybridization utilizing biotinylated DNA probes. Increased expression of Ki‐ ras , Ha‐ ras and N‐ ras genes was observed in 12 cases, 6 cases and 1 case of NHL, respectively. Genomic DNA extracted from these 23 cases of NHL was region‐specifically amplified by means of polymerase chain reaction to examine the presence of point mutations at the 12th, 13th and 61st codons of Ki‐, Ha‐ and N‐ ras genes. ...

Locoregional recurrence of oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC) has been considered a poor prognostic entity in terms of survival rate. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of locoregional recurrence and to identify significant risk factors for locoregional recurrence in early-stage OTSCC. We retrospectively reviewed the records of 58 patients who underwent radical surgery for T1-2N0 OTSCC. The local recurrence and regional recurrence rates were 10.3 % (6/58 patients) and 15. ...

Abstract The risk factors for recurrence of head and neck cancer are classified as being of high or intermediate risk. Those of intermediate risk include multiple positive nodes without extracapsular nodal spread, perineural/vascular invasion, pT3/T4 primary tumours, and positive level IV/V nodes. However, little evidence is available to validate these intermediate risk factors. We analyzed perineural/vascular invasion in 89 patients who underwent radical surgery for oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma, ...

The efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is controversial, and no report supports NAC with a high evidence level. Recently, we showed that a deep surgical margin was resected very close to the tumor site in many NAC-treated oral squamous cell carcinoma patients, suggesting that NAC may lead to local recurrence and poor outcomes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of NAC on tumor local recurrence using cancer stem cell marker immunohistochemistry. We retrospectively analyzed ...

All of the Salmonella enteritidis strains isolated from diseased animals (61 strains) and from beef (2 strains) in Japan and in West Germany (1 strain), except for 2 strains isolated from ducks, harbored either a 36-megadalton (Md) plasmid alone or in combination with several other plasmids of different sizes. It is likely that these 36-Md plasmids from various S. enteritidis strains were derived from the same origin because their plasmid DNAs showed the same cleavage patterns obtained with EcoRI, HindIII, ...

We report the immunizing capacity of Salmonella enteritidis AL1192, a strain that has been cured of a 36-megadalton plasmid, to protect ddY mice against subsequent challenge with virulent salmonellas. This strain, which was given subcutaneously at a dose of 10(6) organisms, provided significant protection against oral, subcutaneous, or intraperitoneal challenge by virulent wild-type strains of not only S. enteritidis, but also S. dublin, S. naestved, and S. typhimurium.

Ten myotonic dystrophy patients (seven men and three women, ages ranging from 35 to 58 years) were evaluated with a 12-lead ECG, 24-hour Holter monitor recording, invasive electrophysiologic studies, and echocardiographic examination. Nine patients displayed abnormalities in the conduction system. ECG and Holter monitor abnormalities were first-degree atrioventricular block (n = 8), second-degree ...

Plasmid profiles were investigated in 65 isolates of Salmonella typhimurium derived from animal outbreaks during the period of 1978 through 1983 in Japan. Incidence of plasmids, drug-resistance, and conjugative R plasmids were extraordinarily high in these isolates. This high incidence reflects the prophylactic and therapeutic use of antibiotics. Most isolates from diseased animals, cohabiting animals, and each farm showed the same or similar plasmid patterns. However, there was a difference in ...

In vitro activities of benanomicins and their analogues against human immunodeficiency virus and fungi including Candida, Cryptococcus and Aspergillus, were examined. The free carboxyl group and at least one sugar moiety in the benanomicins were essential for their activities. Benanomicin A was most active and had low toxicity, and was selected as the best candidate for chemotherapy.

Distant metastasis of malignant neoplasm to the oral soft tissue is extremely rare. We report a case of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) metastasizing to the tongue. A 47-year-old man visited our hospital with chief complaint of a lump on the middle third of the dorsum of his tongue and the lesion fell off from the tongue. Although histopathological diagnosis of the mass was granuloma teleangiectaticum, similar nodule reappeared in the same area 2 weeks later. The second lesion was composed of granuloma ...

It has been demonstrated that a chiral, insulated poly(p-phenylene ethynylene) (PPE) nano-wire can be created by a polymer wrapping method utilizing natural β-1,3-glucan polysaccharide schizophyllan (SPG). Spectroscopic and microscopic measurements have revealed that PPE adopts a rigid conformation and exists as one piece in the helical hollow constructed by two SPG chains. Moreover, the inherent helical structure of SPG can induce the chiral twisting of the insulated PPE backbone. It is believed ...

Vascular invasion and lymph node metastasis have been used as histopathological prognosticators of cancers including oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). In addition to metastatic potential via blood vessels, tumor-induced angiogenesis might also be associated with prognosis. However, the efficacy of combined evaluation of vascular invasion and angiogenesis-associated molecules for the prognosis of OSCC remains obscure. This is also the case in lymph node metastasis and lymphovasculogenesis-associated ...
