Summary Background Regular, detailed reporting on population health by underlying cause of death is fundamental for public health decision making. Cause-specific estimates of mortality and the subsequent effects on life expectancy worldwide are valuable metrics to gauge progress in reducing mortality rates. These estimates are particularly important following large-scale mortality spikes, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. When systematically analysed, mortality rates and life expectancy allow comparisons ...

To make potato production more sustainable for smallholder farmers, product diversification through processing is critical. On the other hand, the processing sector mandated some stringent standards in order to maintain product quality, hence potato quality evaluations are required for chip processing industries. Specific gravity, starch, reducing sugars, tuber dry matter, and chip color are all important characteristics to consider for processing. This study was designed to find suitable potato ...

Artificial intelligence has been prevalent recently as its use in the medical field is noticed to be increased. However, middle east countries like Syria are deficient in multiple AI implementation methods in the field of medicine. So, holding these AI implementation methods in the medical field is necessary, which may be incredibly beneficial for making diagnosis more accessible and help in the treatment. This paper intends to determine AI's knowledge, attitude, and practice among doctors and medical ...

This paper presents a wideband and high-gain rectangular microstrip array antenna with a new frequency-selective surface (FSS) designed as a reflector for the sub-6 5G applications. The proposed antenna is designed to meet the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) standard for 5G in the mid-band (3.5-5 GHz) applications. The designed antenna configuration consists of 1 × 4 rectangular microstrip array antenna with an FSS reflector to produce a semi-stable high radiation gain. The modeled FSS delivered ...

Deteriorating soil fertility and gradually decreasing rice productivity along with higher greenhouse gas emissions from paddy fields have emerged as serious threats to the sustainability of rice production and food security. Rice production in the subtropical environment in Bangladesh is mostly dependent on synthetic inorganic fertilizer to maintain productivity; however, the inorganic fertilizer has negative effects on global warming. In this study, treatment of lymphoid tumor cells with low dose clofarabine upregulated the expression of Sp17 and SPAN-Xb. This was associated with an increase in hypomethylated CpG dinucleotides and a decrease in global DNA methylation, as demonstrated by decreases in the percent of methylated Alu repeats. The most optimal concentration of clofarabine to induce DNA hypomethylation and CT antigen expression was between 1x10(-9) and 1x10(-8)M. Above this, clofarabine resulted in tumor cell growth ...

Endogenous allantoin derives from the breakdown of tissue nucleic acids. This study examined the effect of changes in protein supply on endogenous allantoin excretion by sheep. The animals were nourished by infusions of volatile fatty acids into the rumen and casein into the abomasum, thus avoiding ruminal microbial fermentation (i.e., no supply of exogenous nucleic acids). While a constant energy supply was maintained, the protein supply was altered in one of two ways: 1) changed from 0 to 3000 ...

Organochlorine pesticides (p,p′-DDT, p,p′-DDD, p,p′-DDE, aldrin, lindane, and heptachlor) were measured in muscle tissue of catfish (Tachysurus thalassinus) during the dry and wet season. Catfish were collected from the South Patches of the Bay of Bengal during October–December 1997 and May–July 1998. Tissue residues were analyzed by using gas-chromatography (GC) in electron capture detector (ECD) mode and were verified by thin layer chromatography (TLC). The pesticide residues levels were found in order ...

Three C-17 diacetylenic compounds (1–3), one monoterpenoid (4), seven ceramides (leucoceramides A–G, 5a–g), six cerebrosides (leucocerebrosides A–F, 6a–f) and nine known compounds were isolated from the methanolic extract of Hydrocotyle leucocephala. Their structures were established by spectroscopic methods. The isolated compounds 1–3, 5a–g, 6a–f and 7 were shown to be active in the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced cytokine production assay for IL-10, IL-12, and TNF-α.

Type 2 diabetes has become a leading cause of morbidity and mortality world over.Magnesium homeostasis has been hypothesized to be a link between insulin resistance type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension and CAD.This study was under taken to evaluate the relationship between serum magnesium and diabetes mellitus without and with complications. We found significantly low levels of serum magnesium in patients with DM when compared to control.Further significantly low levels of serum magnesium were ...

Xenografting primary human solid tumor tissue into immunodeficient mice is a widely used tool in studies of human cancer biology; however, care must be taken to prove that the tumors obtained recapitulate parent tissue. We xenografted primary human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tumor fragments or bulk tumor cell suspensions into immunodeficient mice. We unexpectedly observed that 11 of 21 xenografts generated from 16 independent patient samples resembled lymphoid neoplasms rather than HCC. Immunohistochemistry ...

It has previously been reported by our group that Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 is involved in anticancer immunity induced by OK-432, a Streptococcus-derived immunotherapeutic agent. However the detailed mechanism of the OK-432-induced immune response via TLR4 remained uncertain, because it may not be possible for OK-432, which consists of whole bacterial bodies, to bind directly to TLR4. In the current study, we conducted in vitro and in vivo experiments to investigate the hypothesis that OK-432 may ...

Five cyclobutane dimers, achyrodimers A-E (1-5), along with 11 known compounds were isolated from the methanol extract of the Colombian medicinal plant Achyrocline bogotensis. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopy. Several of these compounds were screened for cytokine-inducing activity in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

[structure: see text] A structurally unique hydrophobic compound, biyouyanagin A, was isolated from the MeOH extract of the leaves of Hypericum chinense L. var. salicifolium. The structure of biyouyanagin A was elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidence. Biyouyanagin A showed a significant activity against HIV and inhibited cytokine production.

Abstract A lipoteichoic acid-related molecule OK-PSA is an active component of OK-432, a Streptococcus-derived anticancer immunotherapeutic agent. In the present study, we first examined the effect of OK-PSA on the maturation of dendritic cells (DCs) in vitro by using the DCs derived from 5 healthy donors and 10 patients with head and neck cancer with or without expression of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) or MD-2 mRNA. OK-PSA treatment effectively increased the surface expression of MHC class II, CD80, ...
