Suicide is a leading cause of death in adolescents, but detection of its risk is often challenging. Many mental illnesses share the common symptom of appetite loss and it is also known that people who suffer from these illnesses are at greater risk of suicide. However, the relationship between appetite loss and suicide risk has yet to be examined. For adolescents in particular, questions about appetite loss may be easier to answer than sensitive questions regarding mental health. The present study ...

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate whether improvement in physical activity of students following a 4-month intervention of a university course was maintained 8 months later. Data on 77 students who responded to our scheduled inquiries completely through 1 year were analyzed. Participants of the intervention group (n = 49) using the internet-based physical activity program exhibited significant increases in energy expenditures measured by IPAQ compared with the no-treatment control group ( ...

We report a rare case of shunt malfunction resulting from breakage of the Codman-Hakim programmable shunt valve system following a blow to the head. Originally, the patient had suffered intraventricular hemorrhage a month after birth; ventriculoperitoneal shunt was performed at 7 months. After that, the shunt valve functioned well for 7 years. The patient presented with headaches after receiving a blow behind the right ear. The headache became exacerbated with activity and improved with rest. Damage ...

The mechanism for the assembly of HDL with cellular lipid by ABCA1 and helical apolipoprotein was investigated in hepatocytes. Both HepG2 cells and mouse primary culture hepatocytes produced HDL with apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) whether endogenously synthesized or exogenously provided. Probucol, an ABCA1 inactivator, inhibited these reactions, as well as the reversible binding of apoA-I to HepG2. Primary cultured hepatocytes of ABCA1-deficient mice also lacked HDL production regardless of the presence ...

A molybdate series with Sc2(WO4)3-type structure, which has been demonstrated to be suitable for trivalent ion conduction, was prepared, and the trivalent ion conducting characteristics of this series were compared with those of the tungstate series. The ionic conductivities of the molybdate series become considerably higher in comparison to those of the tungstate series. Since the ionic radius of Mo6+ is smaller than that of W6+, the oxide anions that form a tetrahedron unit with Mo6+ ion form ...

Thermal and photochemical interconversion occurs between the isomeric pair of tetrathiotungstate [WS4 ]2- clusters 1 and 2, which were formed by thermolysis of [Cp*2 Ru2 S4 ] and [W(CO)3 (MeCN)3 ] [Eq. (1)] and then structurally characterized. During synthesis, a dramatic redistribution of ligands between the Ru and W atoms takes place without the loss of any CO and S ligands.

The trivalent ionic conduction in the Sc2(WO4)3–Gd2(WO4)3 solid solution with the Sc2(WO4)3-type structure was investigated. The solubility limit of Gd3+ in Sc2(WO4)3 is 60 mol% in the Sc site and the lattice size of the solid solution isotropically expands with increasing the Gd3+ content. The ionic conductivity of the system greatly increased with an increase of the Gd3+ substitution and the maximum value of 6.2×10−5 S cm−1 at 600°C was obtained for the composition, Sc1.6Gd0.4(WO4)3, which is ...

Abstract We introduce two new methods for target cloning of DNA fragments corresponding to spots on the two‐dimensional profile of restriction landmark genomic scanning (RLGS). One is a restriction trapper‐based method and the other is a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) mediated method. Both are designed to select the target DNA fragments from a large amount of unlabeled background DNA fragments in the RLGS gel which produce background clones. The restriction trapper method is simple, with a cloning ...

Neonatologists resuscitate asphyxiated neonates by every available means, including positive ventilation, oxygen therapy, and drugs. Asphyxiated neonates sometimes present symptoms that mimic those of inflammation, such as fever and edema. The main pathophysiology of the asphyxia is inflammation caused by hypoxic-ischemic reperfusion. At birth or in the perinatal period, neonates may suffer several, hypoxic insults, which can activate inflammatory cells and inflammatory mediator production leading ...

In order to ensure the safety of hydrogen energy system, a robust and reliable hydrogen sensor device with an optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) has been developed. The sensing mechanism is based on temperature changes in the device induced by the heat of the catalytic reaction of hydrogen on platinum-loaded fumed silica catalyst powder. Through optimization of the preparation conditions for the catalyst, which is a hydrogen-sensitive substance, a large degree of heat generation in the presence of ...

Here we report on a hydrogen gas sensor comprised of Pt-WO3 nano-/micro- powder films, which were produced using nanosecond pulsed laser ablation and deposition on a silica glass substrate under atmospheric conditions. An all- optical non-contact method of probing its electromagnetic radiation transmittance in the near-IR 1.3 μm telecommunications frequency band was employed for rapid ~10 s timescale detection of low-concentration (below 4% by volume) hydrogen gas admixtures. Discussion on optimizing ...

A hydrogen sensor based on plasmonic metasurfaces is demonstrated to exhibit the industry-required 10 s reaction time and sensitivity. It consists of a layer of either Y or WO3 sandwiched between a top Pd nanodisk and a Au mirror at the base. The phase change layer (Y, WO3) reacts with hydrogen, and the corresponding change of the refractive index (permittivity) is detected by the spectral shift of the resonance dip in reflectance at the IR spectral window. This direct reflectance readout of the permittivity ...

Hydrogen gas has attracted attention as a new energy carrier, and simple but highly sensitive hydrogen sensors are required. We fabricated an optical hydrogen sensor based on a silicon microring resonator (MRR) with tungsten oxide (WO3) using a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible process for the MRR and a sol-gel method for the WO3 layer and investigated its sensing characteristics at device temperatures of 5, 20, and 30 °C. At each temperature, a hydrogen concentration of as low ...

For hydrogen sensor and storage applications, films of Au and Pd were (i) co-sputtered at different rates or (ii) deposited in a sequentially alternating fashion to create a layered structure on a cover glass. Peculiarities of hydrogen uptake and release were optically monitored using 1.3 μm wavelength light. Increase of optical transmission was observed for hydrogenated Pd-rich films of 10-30 nm thickness. Up to a three times slower hydrogen release took place as compared with the hydrogen uptake. ...

In this study, potentiometric sensors using either Pt, Al or stainless steel working electrodes were fabricated. Both Pt and stainless steel electrodes exhibited high performance. As an example, a 200 mV response was obtained from SUS304 stainless steel electrode exposed to 1 mg/L residual chlorine concentration within about 4 min. This study focuses on the fire-suppression capabilities and corrosive properties of ferrocene dispersions. The motivation behind the present study was to develop a high-performance, phosphorus-free fire suppressant. Aqueous dispersions containing micron-sized ferrocene particles and surfactants were prepared using sonication techniques. In this study, Triton X-100 (TX), Noigen TDS-80 (NT), Tween 60 (T60), and Tween 80 (T80) were used as surfactants. Suppression experiments involving pool fires clearly ...

A highly sensitive hydrogen gas sensor based on a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) has been developed. Various potential hydrogen sensor materials were screened by assessing the catalytic activities of oxide-supported platinum particles prepared by a sol–gel method. It was determined that a Pt/SiO2 film was the most appropriate sensor material; exposure of this film to 4 vol% H2 in humid air for 30 s at room temperature produced a temperature change of 65 K. In addition, the Pt/SiO2 was able to respond ...
