Ann Sherif,

The mid-1950s literary debut of Ishihara Shintarō with his novel Season of the Sun (Taiyō no Kisetsu) marked a new interaction between Japanese mass culture and the historically dominant literary establishment. By skilfully mobilizing the emerging post-Occupation discourses of post-war film, literature, criticism and Cold War capitalist consumerism, Ishihara succeeded in creating a new emphasis on a youth culture divorced from the war responsibility debate. Ishihara's subsequent political career and his ...

We propose and demonstrate a novel biosensor based on a silicon-single-microring-resonator-loaded Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MRR-MZI), and discuss the design of the sensor theoretically. Owing to the combination of an MZI and the enhanced phase change in a microring resonator (MRR), high sensitivity is expected to be realized. The designed MRR-MZI sensor is fabricated using a CMOS-compatible process, and its sensing characteristics are measured using ethanol solutions with a concentration of less ...

Improved thermal cycling durability of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) using a -based electrolyte was studied by inserting a thin (SSC55) cathode interlayer with a submicron-sized convex. The thin SSC55 interlayer was prepared on a SDC20-LSGM9182 bilayer film by pulsed layer deposition. The resulting maximum power density (MPD) was at , and the open circuit voltage was close to the theoretical value. In addition, the thermal cycling tolerance was significantly improved. The decrease in MPD was only 4% ...

The electrochemical performance and electrode reactions using ordered mesoporous β-MnO2 modified with Pd as a cathode catalyst for rechargeable Li-air batteries was reported. Well-ordered mesoporous β-MnO2 was prepared using mesoporous silica KIT-6 as a template under hydrothermal synthesis of Mn(NO3)2·H2O. The obtained mesoporous β-MnO2 shows narrow pore size distribution of 1 nm. With the dispersion of small amounts of Pd to β-MnO2, mesoporous β-MnO2 exhibited a high initial discharge capacity ...

Direct utilization of hydrocarbon and other renewable fuels is one of the most important issues concerning solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Mixed ionic and electronic conductors (MIECs) have been explored as anode materials for direct hydrocarbon-type SOFCs. However, electrical conductivity of the most often reported MIEC oxide electrodes is still not satisfactory. As a result, mixed-conducting oxides with high electrical conductivity and catalytic activity are attracting considerable interest as an ...

Artificial photosynthesis is one of the chemists' dreams and the separation of charges with long lives is fundamental for achieving artificial photosynthesis. In actual photosynthesis, Z-scheme excitation separates electronic charge with high efficiency using solar light. Here we report that photo-excitation in Cr-tetraphenylporphyrin chroride (Cr-TPPCl)/Zr doped KTaO3 (KTa(Zr)O3) is analogous to the Z-scheme in photosynthesis, and that we achieve complete charge separation at room temperature. Photovoltaic ...

Abstract Self‐recovery is one of the most‐desirable properties for functional materials. Recently, oxide anodes have attracted significant attention as alternative anode materials for solid‐oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) that can overcome reoxidation, deactivation, and coke‐deposition. However, the electrical conductivity and surface activity of the most‐widely used oxide anodes remain unsatisfactory. Herein, we report the synthesis of an “intelligent oxide anode” that exhibits self‐recovery from power‐ ...

A number of clinical studies have shown that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) exacerbate inflammatory bowel disease; however the molecular mechanism whereby this occurs remains unclear. NSAIDs inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX), which has subtypes COX-1 and COX-2. In this study, we have examined the effect of various types of NSAIDs on the development of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis, an animal model of inflammatory bowel disease. The DSS-induced colitis was worsened by administration ...

The green-tide chlorophyta Ulva contains the functional acidic polysaccharide ulvan in its cell wall. Here, we focused on the development of a novel soft material that can be used as a biocompatible ion exchanger. Combining chitosan and ulvan solutions was found to yield a hydrogel with various functions. This ulvan-chitosan polyion complex gel was more stable than an alginic acid-chitosan gel under both acidic and basic conditions. However, an ulvan-chitosan gel-coated vessel showed only a mild ...

The cell-volume regulation by swelling-activated Cl− current (ICl,swell) was studied in guinea pig ventricular myocytes, using a microscopic video-image analysis. We have previously shown that in ventricular cells depolarized in high-K+ ([K+]o >45 mM) solution, an activation of the cyclic AMP-dependent Cl− current (ICl,cAMP) leads to cell swelling. We first investigated the mechanism underlying the ICl,cAMP-independent recovery (shrinkage) of the swollen cells. They shrank when the membrane potential ( ...

Oxygen diffusivity in Cu- and Ga-doped Pr2NiO4 + δ was investigated with tracer diffusion and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) analysis in order to estimate the oxide ion conductivity. Doping Ni sites in Pr2NiO4 with Cu and Ga doubles the oxygen diffusivity, and the measured activation energy for diffusion is 0.64 ± 0.04 eV for Pr1.9Ni0.75Cu0.25O4 + δ and 0.57 ± 0.05 eV for Pr1.9(Ni0.75Cu0.25)0.95Ga0.05O4 + δ. This result suggests that the diffusion mechanism was not changed by doping with Cu and/or ...

This Perspective focuses on the photocatalytic activity of two-dimensional (2D) oxide and nitrogen-doped oxide crystals and the effective use of 2D photocatalysts for understanding the mechanism of the water splitting reaction. Strategies for improving the activities of 2D photocatalysts are slightly different from those of bulk photocatalysts. Although it is well-known that a photocatalyst without co-catalyst loading has low activity for hydrogen production from water, a certain type of 2D oxide ...

The effect of operating temperature on the discharge potential and cycle stability of an Fe–air solid oxide rechargeable battery was studied. An Fe–air cell operated at 773 K exhibited the highest discharge potential (1.07 V) and high cycle stability with a current density of 5 mA cm−2. The high discharge potential at lower operating temperatures is due to aggregation of the anode and Fe powder being suppressed. The high redox cycle stability of the Ni–Fe-based anode at 773 K is explained by the ...

The effects of polymer coating on the cycle stability of Li–O2 batteries were investigated. Capacity fading is much higher with increasing Li utilization; however, it was found that coating the Li metal with poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF–HFP) highly and effectively increased the cycle stability of a Li–O2 battery. This indicates that the coating may prevent shape changes of the metal during discharge and charge cycles. Impedance analysis suggested that the interfacial resistance ...

Photocatalytic water splitting activities of GaN:ZnO modified with various porphyrins were investigated. Tetraphenylporphyrinato-chromium(III) chloride (Cr-TPPCl) showed the most positive effect on the photocatalytic activity of GaN:ZnO, and worked without decomposition in the photocatalytic water splitting for 24 h. Fluorescence spectra measurements revealed that photoluminescence intensity of GaN:ZnO was decreased by Cr-TPPCl modification and by loading RhOX and NiO cocatalysts. It suggests that ...

A solid oxide electrolysis cell for reducing CO2 to CO was studied using a LaGaO3-based electrolyte at intermediate temperatures (973–1173 K). Various metals were examined as cathodes for CO2 reduction, and it was found that Ni shows high activity. However, coke formation was observed during the initial period. Furthermore, we found that the electrolysis current could be greatly improved by adding Fe to Ni, resulting in a current density of 1.84 A cm−2 at 1.6 V and 1073 K on a Ni–Fe (9 : 1) cathode. ...
