Exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) is an easily measured marker of airway inflammation. This study was undertaken to evaluate the usefulness of serial eNO in investigating the dose-response relationship for inhaled beclomethasone (BDP), and to compare eNO with other markers of airway inflammation. Following withdrawal of inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) therapy, 65 patients entered a double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled trial of 50, 100, 200 or 500 µg·BDP·day −1 for eight weeks. eNO and spirometry were ...

Continuous treatment with a short-acting β 2 ‐agonist can lead to reduced bronchodilator responsiveness during acute bronchoconstriction. This study evaluated bronchodilator tolerance to salbutamol following regular treatment with a long-acting β 2 ‐agonist, formoterol. The modifying effect of intravenous corticosteroid was also studied. Ten asthmatic subjects (using inhaled steroids) participated in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study. Formoterol 12 μg b.i.d. or matching ...

Vitamin D status and associated metabolism during pregnancy and lactation have been assessed in only a limited number of longitudinal studies, all from the northern hemisphere, with no infant data concurrently reported. Therefore, we aimed to describe longitudinal maternal and infant 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25OHD) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) status during pregnancy and up to 5 months postnatal age, in New Zealand women and their infants living at 45° S latitude. Between September 2011 and June 2013, ...

Background: Many countries recommend daily infant vitamin D supplementation during breastfeeding, but compliance is often poor. A monthly, high-dose maternal regimen may offer an alternative strategy, but its efficacy is unknown. Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the effect of 2 different monthly maternal doses of cholecalciferol on maternal and infant 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] status during the first 5 mo of breastfeeding. Methods: With the use of a randomized, double-blind, ...

Background One aspect of a multidimensional approach to understanding asthma as a complex dynamic disease is to study how lung function varies with time. Variability measures of lung function have been shown to predict response to β 2 -agonist treatment. An investigation was conducted to determine whether mean, coefficient of variation (CV) or autocorrelation, a measure of short-term memory, of peak expiratory flow (PEF) could predict loss of asthma control following withdrawal of regular inhaled corticosteroid ( ...

Shirley Jones,

This edited book has a social anthropological approach to what the editor and chapter authors call ‘reproductive disruption’ (i.e. the ‘norm’ not being followed for whatever reason). Within this title they include infertility, pregnancy loss, childbirth and beyond. There are eight chapters, in two parts, and an introduction that defines women's health and is divided into 12 themes, called ‘messages'. The underlying national approach is American (US) and, therefore, practices are not necessarily comparative ...

This study compares samples of corporate homepages gathered in 1996 and 1997 with homepages of the same sites gathered in 2006. Based on the example of the evolution of typography following the invention of the printing press, it is hypothesized that homepages of 2006 will be more homogenous with each other than the earlier samples and will thus exhibit the development of standardization. The study finds increased standardization in the 2006 homepages in the categories of homepage length, primary ...

Popular Victorian women writers considers a diverse group of women writers within the Victorian literary marketplace. It looks at authors such as Ellen Wood, Mary Braddon, Rhoda Broughton and Charlotte Yonge as well as less well-known writers including Jessie Fothergill and Eliza Meteyard. Together they bring the work of largely unknown authors and new perspectives on ...

An examination of the efficacy of several structural types of chelating agents in the removal of cadmium from its intracellular deposits in mouse liver and kidneys reveals that of the structural types examined, only dithiocarbamates and a vicinal dithiol were able to mobilize cadmium from such intracellular sites. Esters of L‐cysteine, a macrocyclic thioether, and a disulfide of a dithiocarbamate were unable to cause any appreciable decrease in either renal or hepatic cadmium levels. Charged groups ...
