The hippocampus is crucial for forming associations between environmental stimuli. However, it is unclear how neural activities of hippocampal neurons dynamically change during the learning process. To address this question, we developed an associative memory task for rats with auditory stimuli. In this task, the rats were required to associate tone pitches (high and low) and ports (right and left) to obtain a reward. We recorded the firing activity of neurons in rats hippocampal CA1 during the learning ...

<b><i>Objective:</i></b> The aim of this study was to confirm the effects of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and anemia on physical function and to clarify whether the interaction between CKD and anemia has an additive effect. <b><i>Design:</i></b> Eligible subjects were chronic heart failure (HF) patients who were discharged between March 2007 and August 2009. A total of 102 chronic HF patients (33% females; mean age: 68 ± 14 years) were enrolled in the present ...

Extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) is a member of the family of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and coordinately regulates a multitude of cellular processes. In response to a variety of extracellular stimuli, phosphorylation of both threonine and tyrosine residues activates ERK. Recent evidence indicates that ERK is activated in response to cellular stress such as acoustic trauma. However, the specific role of ERK isoforms in auditory function is not fully understood. Here, we show ...

Nefiracetam, a nootropic agent, enhanced the slope of field excitatory postsynaptic potentials in the CA1 region of rat hippocampal slices to about 170% of basal levels, being evident still at 4-h washing-out of the drug. A similar sustained enhancement (>/=16 h after i.m. injection with nefiracetam) was observed in the population spikes recorded from the granular cell layer of the intact mouse hippocampus. Saturation of the enhancement in the synaptic strength occluded potentiation obtained with long- ...

Abstract The activity of primary auditory cortex (A1) neurons is modulated not only by sensory inputs but also by other task-related variables in associative learning. However, it is unclear how A1 neural activity changes dynamically in response to these variables during the learning process of associative memory tasks. Therefore, we developed an associative memory task using auditory stimuli in rats. In this task, rats were required to associate tone frequencies (high and low) with a choice of ports ( ...

We report the use of unenhanced postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) to visualize the coronary artery in a 45-year-old man who died suddenly. Cardiac PMCT was performed over the same anatomical region, and the individual scans were fused using software for image data summation (fused CT). Cardiac fused PMCT is an innovative imaging method that can clearly delineate the vascular wall of the coronary artery and hypostasis in the lumen, which is not feasible using routine whole-body CT.

We describe a 41-year-old Japanese man with metastases of the lung, bone, lymph nodes and the base of the tongue 34 months after right radical nephrectomy. One month after systemic administration of human lymphoblastoid interferon (IFN), the metastasis to the base of the tongue completely disappeared, while other metastases increased both in size and number. Though the true effect of IFN-alpha on the metastatic renal cell carcinoma to the base of the tongue is still unknown, our case indicates that ...

We aimed to clarify the clinical features and surgical outcomes of descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM) to provide a guide for its surgical treatment, focusing on the type of extension and the deployed procedures. As a joint study of the Japan Broncho-esophagological Society and the Japanese Association for Chest Surgery (JBES1703/JACS1806 study), the clinical data of consecutive patients with DNM who underwent surgical drainage between 2012 and 2016 were collected from 131 participating institutions. ...

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the progress of postoperative cardiac rehabilitation and physical function in elderly patients after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Methods: One hundred thirty-nine patients aged over 65 years with severe aortic stenosis (54 males and 85 females, aged 77 ± 7 years) who underwent elective conventional open heart AVR or TAVR were selected and divided into 3 groups; group A (AVR, < 80 years), group B (AVR ≥ 80 years), group C (TAVR). We evaluated ...

The pathophisiological significance of rat GSH-PO on various fatty liver and hormonal disorders of adrenal glands was intensively investigated by usage of the immunoperoxidase method established in our laboratory. It is also well documented fact that lipid peroxidation attribute the occurrence of serious pulmonary disease induced by oxidants, radiation etc and/or arteiosclerosis. For the studies of those pulmonary and arteriosclerotic disorders, however, rabbit is allegedly recognized as a superior ...

Tracheal stenosis is a refractory and recurrent disease induced by excessive cell proliferation within the restricted tracheal space. We investigated the role of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), which mediates a broad range of intracellular signal transduction processes in tracheal stenosis and the therapeutic effect of the MEK inhibitor which is the upstream kinase of ERK. We histologically analyzed cauterized tracheas to evaluate stenosis using a tracheal stenosis mouse model. Using ...

Human experts diagnose artifacts by generating fault trees, i. e., finding possible faulty components and their cause-effect relations from observations. Lately such task seems to be much harder, as artifacts become complex. Therefore computational methods, such as model-based reasoning, are expected to cope with the complexity. This paper presents a method of generating fault trees that uses qualitative reasoning. The proposed method deals with “model generation” which relates to the structural ...
