We have examined the prevalence of gene cagA and vacA alleles in 129 patients, 69 with gastritis and 60 with peptic ulcer diseases from North Brazil and their relation with histopathological data. vacA and cagA genotype were determined by polymerase chain reaction. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was used for histological diagnosis. 96.6% of the patients were colonized by Helicobacter pylori strains harboring single vacA genotype (nont-mixed infection). Among them, 11.8% had subtype s1a, 67.8% had subtype ...

Bacterial cellulose (BC) has been extensively exploited for applications in materials science, biomedical and technological fields. The BC production demands culture media rich in carbon sources. Agro-forestry residues constitute an interesting source of nutrients for microorganism, but they are frequently wasted. For cashew crop, exudate is periodically extracted from the tree trunks to increase the production of cashew nut, the most valuable product from cashew trees that produces about 700 g of ...

Whereas lanthanide-based upconverting particles are promising candidates for several micro- and nanothermometry applications, understanding spatially varying effects related to their internal dynamics and interactions with the environment near the surface remains challenging. To separate the bulk from the surface response, this work proposes and performs hyperspectral sample-scanning experiments to obtain spatially resolved thermometric measurements on single microparticles of NaYF4: Yb3+,Er3+. ...

In this work we explored the fabrication of flexible and transparent hybrids of silk fibroin (SF) and epoxy-modified siloxane for photonic applications. It is well-known that regenerated SF solutions can form free-standing films with high transparency. Although SF has a restricted number of chemically reactive side groups, the main issues of as-cast pristine SF films regard the high solubility into aqueous media, brittleness, and low thermal stability. The design of SF films with enhanced functionality ...

In this work, we report the green synthesis of four luminescent organotin compounds 1–4 derived from amino acid Schiff bases (1: Naph-Trp-SnPh2, 2: Naph-Tyr-SnBu2, 3: Naph-Tyr-SnPh2, 4: Naph-Phe-SnPh2), obtained by ultrasound-assisted synthesis in short time (~20 min) and good yields (>95%). The molecular structure proposed in solution (1H and 119Sn NMR) was confirmed by X-ray diffraction study for compound 1 where the tin atom resides in trigonal bipyramid geometry. Luminescent silk fibroin scaffolds ( ...

Peyronie's disease is characterized by fibrous plaque formation of the tunica albuginea, causing penile deformity and fertility problems. The aim of the present study was to investigate alterations in the extracellular matrix in Peyronie's disease. The study used tissues collected by surgical procedure from individuals that presented a well-established disease, while control samples were obtained by biopsies of fresh cadavers. Immunohistochemistry analysis followed by digital quantification was ...

Patients with Sickle cell disease (SCD) who receive regular transfusions are at risk for developing cardiac toxicity from iron overload. The aim of this study was to assess right and left cardiac volumes and function, late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) and iron deposits in patients with SCD using CMR, correlating these values with transfusion burden, ferritin and hemoglobin levels. Thirty patients with SCD older than 20 years of age were studied in a 1.5 T scanner and compared to age- and sex-matched ...

The town of Teresina, in the state of Piauí, Brazil, presents a history of land sinking processes. Two sinking events deserve to be highlighted, the first occurred in 1999 at Simplício Mendes Street and the other occurred on July 31, 2008, at Francisco Mendes Street. To identify possible shallow caves and associated structures, the Geological Survey of Brazil/CPRM developed a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) study to verify the occurrence of reflection patterns characteristic of these dissolution structures. ...

The considerable role of pristine bacterial cellulose membranes (BC) as ideal dressings have been widely demonstrated to treat wounds and burns. Nevertheless, drawbacks regarding antimicrobial spectrum and frequent dressing replacement are still present. Based on this, the present work proposes an innovative dressing by incorporating a technological self-microemulsifying formulation (SMEF) encapsulating propolis (BC/PP). BC/PP was fully chemically and biologically characterized employing in vitro and ...

Atorvastatin, a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, used in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, has been previously shown to regulate ABCB1 expression in vivo and in vitro. We hypothesized that the statin could regulate gene expression of ABCB1 transporter via microRNAs.Expression of microRNAs and ABCB1 mRNA was examined in atorvastatin-treated and control cells using real-time PCR. miR-491-3P mimic and inhibitor were transfected in Caco-2 and ABCB1 expression was monitored by western blot and real- ...

Abstract Stem volume is a key attribute of Eucalyptus forest plantations upon which decision-making is based at diverse levels of planning. Quantifying volume through remote sensing can support a proper management of forests. Because of limitations on spaceborne optical and synthetic aperture radar sensors, this study integrated both types of datasets assembled using support vector regression (SVR) to retrieve the stand volume of Eucalyptus plantations. We assessed different combinations of sensors ...

A strain isolated from Kombucha tea was isolated and used as an alternative bacterium for the biosynthesis of bacterial cellulose (BC). In this study, BC generated by this novel bacterium was compared to Gluconacetobacter xylinus biosynthesized BC. Kinetic studies reveal that Komagataeibacter rhaeticus was a viable bacterium to produce BC according to yield, thickness and water holding capacity data. Physicochemical properties of BC membranes were investigated by UV-vis and Fourier transform infrared ...

The natural regeneration management is a good strategy of ecological restoration of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most devastated biomes on the planet. However, the frequent occurrence of wildfires is one of the challenges to the success of this method. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of wildfires on forest dynamics in Atlantic Forest. The studied area was explored during the coffee cycle when plantations replaced primary forests. We used remote sensing data to analyze ...

Background Merozoites of Plasmodium falciparum invade through several pathways using different RBC receptors. Field isolates appear to use a greater variability of these receptors than laboratory isolates. Brazilian field isolates were shown to mostly utilize glycophorin A-independent invasion pathways via glycophorin B (GPB) and/or other receptors. The Brazilian population exhibits extensive polymorphism in blood group antigens, however, no studies have been done to relate the prevalence of the ...
