External proton and 6,7Li beams, of energies around 24 and 48 MeV respectively, were produced and characterized dosimetrically at the Tandem accelerator TANDAR in Buenos Aires and used for radiobiology studies on tumor and normal cell cultures. The beam monitoring instrumentation of a dedicated beam line is discussed. Relative biological effectiveness (RBE) values (at 10% survival) have been measured as functions of projectile energy (0–21 MeV) for protons and 6,7Li ions for different tumor (PDV, PDVC57) ...

The c.429_452dup24 of the ARX gene is a rare genetic anomaly, leading to X-Linked Intellectual Disability without brain malformation. While in certain cases c.429_452dup24 has been associated with specific clinical patterns such as Partington syndrome, the consequence of this mutation has been also often classified as "non-specific Intellectual Disability". The present work aims at a more precise description of the clinical features linked to the c.429_452dup24 mutation. We clinically reviewed all ...

The Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) has been shown to be a valid tool to assess the capability of eating in reaction to natural hunger/satiety cues. However, its factor structure seems to differ in function of cultural/socioeconomic backgrounds, and its psychometric properties among the adolescents with overweight/obesity (BMI-for-age percentile >85th) have not been examined yet. Thus, this study aims to 1) investigating the factorial structure/psychometric properties of IES-2 in adolescents with ...

Haemopoietic stem-cell transplantation is a life-saving treatment for severe combined immune deficiency. However, there has been little long-term follow-up of this treatment. We did a retrospective analysis of severe HPV disease in a group of 41 patients with severe combined immune deficiency from one centre who were alive 10 years or longer ...

Hermansky Pudlak type 2 syndrome (HPS2) is a rare autosomal recessive primary immune deficiency caused by mutations on β3A gene (AP3B1 gene). The defect results in the impairment of the adaptor protein 3 (AP-3) complex, responsible for protein sorting to secretory lysosomes leading to oculo-cutaneous albinism, bleeding disorders and immunodeficiency. We have studied peripheral blood and lymph node biopsies from two siblings affected by HPS2. Lymph node histology showed a nodular lymphocyte predominance ...

New drugs are required to counter the tuberculosis (TB) pandemic. Here, we describe the synthesis and characterization of 1,3-benzothiazin-4-ones (BTZs), a new class of antimycobacterial agents that kill Mycobacterium tuberculosis in vitro, ex vivo, and in mouse models of TB. Using genetics and biochemistry, we identified the enzyme decaprenylphosphoryl-beta-d-ribose 2'-epimerase as a major BTZ target. Inhibition of this enzymatic activity abolishes the formation of decaprenylphosphoryl arabinose, ...

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) studies consistently show that CSF levels of amyloid-beta 1–42 (Aβ42) are reduced and tau levels increased prior to the onset of cognitive decline related to Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the preclinical prediction accuracy for low CSF Aβ42 levels, a surrogate for brain Aβ42 deposits, is not high. Moreover, the pathology data suggests a course initiated by tauopathy contradicting the contemporary clinical view of an Aβ initiated cascade. CSF Aβ42 and tau data from 3 normal ...

Abstract Common fragile sites (CFSs) are genomic regions frequently involved in cancer-associated rearrangements. Most CFSs lie within large genes, and their instability involves transcription- and replication-dependent mechanisms. Here, we uncover a role for the mitochondrial stress response pathway in the regulation of CFS stability in human cells. We show that FANCD2, a master regulator of CFS stability, dampens the activation of the mitochondrial stress response and prevents mitochondrial dysfunction. ...

The vaults of the Saint Peter basilica in Vatican (Rome) are decorated with mosaics whose realisation is dated to the end of the 16th century. The mortar layers beneath the mosaics are realised with the so-called "Roman stucco", a kind of mastic specifically employed as a binder in the mosaic's supporting layers. Its empirical recipe was known and reported by 18th century authors, accounting for the use of lime, travertine powder added to a mixture of herbs and linseed oil. A recent restoration of ...

Omenn syndrome (OS) is a rare combined immunodeficiency characterized by erythroderma, lymphadenopathy, and autoimmune manifestations. Most cases are due to mutations in the RAG genes. We report a case of OS due to mutations of IL7RA, thus defining Omenn syndrome as a genetically heterogeneous condition.

Summary: Analysis of gene‐targeted mice and patients with severe combined immunodeficiency due to mutations of the α chain of the interleukin‐7 receptor (IL‐7Rα) has shown important differences between mice and humans in the role played by IL‐7 in lymphoid development. More recently, it has been shown that IL‐7Rα is also shared by the receptor for another cytokine, thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP). In this review, we discuss recent advances in IL‐7‐ and TSLP‐mediated signaling. We also report on ...

Evidence supporting the hypothesis that reduced cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) clearance is involved in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer disease (AD) comes primarily from rodent models. However, unlike rodents, in which predominant extracranial CSF egress is via olfactory nerves traversing the cribriform plate, human CSF clearance pathways are not well characterized.
