We use the EAGLE simulations to study the effects of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) on the spatially resolved star-formation activity in galaxies. We study three cases of galaxy asymmetry dividing each galaxy in two halves using the plane (i) perpendicular to the $\rm \texttt{velocity}$ direction, differentiating the galaxy part approaching to the cluster center, hereafter dubbed as the "leading half", and the opposite one "trailing half", (ii) perpendicular to the $\rm \texttt{radial}$ position of the satellite ...

By modelling the axis ratio distribution of SDSS DR8 galaxies we find the intrinsic 3D shapes of spirals and ellipticals. We use morphological information from the Galaxy Zoo project and assume a non-parametric distribution intrinsic of shapes, while taking into account dust extinction. We measure the dust extinction of the full sample of spiral galaxies and find a smaller value than previous estimations, with an edge-on extinction of $E_0 = 0.284^{+0.015}_{-0.026}$ in the SDSS r band. We also find ...

The phosphosescence lifetimes of 1,2,5,6-dibenzanthracene and triphenylene have been measured in polymethylmethacrylate as a function of temperature (77–360°K) at 1 atm and 30 kbar. Two temperature regimes with different activation energies are discernible for both compounds. Matrix compression has negligible influence on the ∼200-cm−1 activation energy below room temperature, but diminishes the larger activation energy (1500–4500 cm−1) above room temperature by 20%–25% at 30 kbar. The pressure data ...

Solubility measurements of naphthalene in seawater of different salinities have been determined by the Generator Column Method in the 276.6 K to 316.8 K temperature range. The Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of solution were evaluated at 298 K by means of the Clarke and Glew equation. The temperature dependence of the Setschenow parameters for naphthalene in seawater has been studied and compared with the values calculated using current models for the salting-out of nonpolar molecules. ...

Previous works have shown that a dense cluster environment affects satellite galaxy properties and accelerates or truncates their evolutionary processes. In this work, we use the EAGLE simulation to study this effect, dissecting the galaxies in two halves: the one that is falling directly to the cluster (leading half) and the one behind (trailing half). Considering all galaxies within the virial radius of the most massive groups and clusters of the simulation ( M h a l o > 10 13 . 8 [ M ⊙ ] ), we find that on average ...

ABSTRACT We study the impact of the environment on galaxies as they fall in and orbit in the potential well of a Local Group (LG) analogue, following them with high cadence. The analysis is performed on eight disc satellite galaxies from the CIELO suite of hydrodynamical simulations. All galaxies have stellar masses within the range $[10^{8.1}\!-\!10^{9.56}] \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }\, {\rm h}^{-1}$. We measure tidal torques, ram pressure, and specific star formation rates (sSFRs) as a function of time, and correlate ...

Accurate solubility measurements covering the range 278–318 K were obtained for the carbamate pesticide carbaryl (1-naphthyl-N-methylcarbamate) in water, natural and artificial seawater, and NaCl, Na 2 SO 4 , CaCl 2 , and (CH 3 ) 4 NBr electrolyte solutions. Carbaryl solubilities were determined using a combination of a generator column method and spectrophotometric techniques. In all cases the solubility of carbaryl in water and in the electrolyte solutions increased with an increase in temperature. The ...

Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) and sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) oils are valorized for their health benefits and both are extensively used as ingredients in different food formulations and/or processes. Their retail prices are higher than those of other edible oils and might promote fraudulent adulterations. Spectroscopic methods associated to untargeted analysis are appropriate and faster than traditional techniques, requiring less time to prepare and run the samples. In the present study Fourier transform ...

This growing interest in quinoa has increased the demand and consequently the prices, being a target for possible adulterations with cheaper cereals. The objective of the work was to study foaming and interfacial properties of β-lactoblobulin and caseinomacropeptide as affected by the formation of nano-particles with increasing amounts of green tea polyphenols. In this contribution foams were obtained by whipping and the overrun, liquid drainage and height stability of the foams were evaluated. The interfacial properties were determined by a drop tensiometer. The formation of nano-particles (30–90 nm) decreased the surface pressure and the elastic ...

Theoretical simulations substantiate these experimental data and the variations of properties upon complexation by evidencing the stability of the inclusion of vanillin in the helical cavity as well as by explaining the related changes of the linear (chiro-)optical properties. In particular, ...

Impedance spectroscopy combined with principal component analysis allows the trace detection of metal ions. The detection system is based on two modified electrodes, each of them containing a chelating agent (pyrocatechol violet and a nitrilotriacetic derivative); as the chelator is able to capture the metal ion at very low concentrations, important electrical changes are produced on the surface environment, generating patterns with different features for each ion. The system is able to differentiate ...

A model for the dependence of the electrical conductance, G, with the strain induced by external mechanical stress in conducting particles-polymer composites is presented. The model assumes that the percolation probability between neighboring particles must depart from a scale-invariant behavior but saturate at moderated-high strains, reaching percolation path’s saturation, with sigmoid dependence. This dependence is obtained by proposing a dynamic picture where contacts or bonds between neighboring ...

Green emitting CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals and red emitting fluorescent protein dTomato constitute a 72% efficiency FRET system with the largest alteration of the overall photoluminescence profile, following complex formation, observed so far. Abstract. Rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis is a disease that is frequently fatal. A 39-year-old man with diabetic ketoacidosis was referred to the authors' ophthalmic service with fever, orbital apex syndrome in the right eye, lethargy, and a black eschar in the palate. He was treated with systemic and local (intraconal) amphotericin B and his ketoacidosis was controlled; exenteration was not performed. Biopsy of the palate proved mucormycosis. Eighteen months later the patient was still alive ...

We measure the effect of the environment on the intrinsic shapes of spiral and elliptical galaxies by finding the 3D shape distribution and dust extinction that fits better the projected shape of galaxies in different environment. We find that spiral galaxies in groups are very similar to field spirals with similar intrinsic properties (magnitudes, sizes and colours). But for spirals in groups, those in denser environments or closer to the centre of the group tend to have a more circular disc than ...
