Summary Background The indications for intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring in patients with acute brain injury and the effects of ICP on patients' outcomes are uncertain. The aims of this study were to describe current ICP monitoring practises for patients with acute brain injury at centres around the world and to assess variations in indications for ICP monitoring and interventions, and their association with long-term patient outcomes. Methods We did a prospective, observational cohort study at 146 ...

IFNs arrest the growth of a small cell lung cancer (SCLC) cell line NCI-H82 in the G1 phase but not the growth of the derived cell line NCI-H82R. Progression through the G1 phase is controlled by positive and negative regulatory genes. Oncoviral genes can override this control. In this study, we compared the effects of human IFN alpha 2b on the mRNA levels of the Cdk inhibitor p27Kip1 in NCI-H82, NCI-H82R and HPV 16 E7-transfected NCI-H82 cell lines. Skeletal muscle atrophy occurs in several pathological conditions, such as cancer, especially during cancer-induced cachexia. This condition is associated with increased morbidity and poor treatment response, decreased quality of life, and increased mortality in cancer patients. Besides muscle atrophy, muscle function loss is even more important to patient quality of life. ...

Keeping in mind the determination of sulfate in natural samples like sea water and industrial effluents, a new indirect method for the determination of sulfate is proposed. It is based on the precipitation of sulfate as lead sulfate. The precipitate is dissolved in excess of ammoniacal solution of standard EDTA and the excess of this solution is determined by titration with magnesium standard solution using an indicator-mixture. A −0.56% relative error was found to a 12 mg level of sulfate mass. ...
