The effects of pig rearing conditions (free-range system based on acorn and pasture versus confinement on a concentrate feed) and muscle location (biceps femoris and semimembranosus) on sensory characteristics of dry-cured Iberian hams were studied. Muscle samples were sensorily evaluated for appearance, texture, aroma and flavor attributes by a trained panel. Muscle location significantly affected texture and appearance traits. Semimembranosus muscle was harder, dryer and more fibrous than was biceps ...

This paper is a synthesis of the landscape, geomorphic and functional evolution of the subalpine belt in the Urbion Sierra, providing a geoecological perspective of the interactions between human activity, spatial organization, geomorphological dynamics and recent land use changes. Landscape changes in the subalpine belt started at least during the Late Neolithic, with forest fires that tried to waste the forest to enable the expansion of summer grasslands favouring an incipient sheep transhumance. ...

Changes on the vegetation cover and land uses are excellent indicators of the environmental dynamics. In this context we are interested in quantifying and understanding the plant cover evolution in Los Cameros (western Iberian Range, La Rioja, Spain) between 1956 and 2001 in relation to the changes of management and land uses. The final objective is to gather the needed information to implement development models aimed to the sustainability of the landscapes and their ecological wealth.

In this paper, we present data and results about a thinning experiment in a natural regeneration stand of Pinus sylvestris L. in Burgos (Spain). The stand has a site index of 29 m at the age of 100 years, according to the site curves given by Rojo and Montero [El pino silvestre en la Sierra de Guadarrama. MAPA, Madrid, 1996, p. 293]. The experiment began in 1972, when the stand was 41 years old. It is now 66 years old. The statistical design of the experiment was a randomised complete block with three ...

J. Ma. Gonzalez Molina,

This paper describes the first part of a study on the possibilities of silvicultural management of mixed pine (Pinus sylvestris L., Pinus pinaster Ait. and Pinus nigra Arn.) and oak (Quercus pyrenaica Willd.) stands in Middle Spain. These mixed stands are the result of transformation plans of the 60-70s from oak coppice-stands in pine stands. The first research step was the typification of this forest by stand quality (site index + stem quality), percentage and type of mixture into mixed forest subtypes. ...
