Abstract A newly developed portable x‐ray fluorescence spectrometer has been evaluated through the onsite and nondestructive analyses of 109 Roman glass artifacts excavated at a Roman cemetery found in Zadar, Croatia. The spectrometer has been designed for on‐site analysis of archaeological glass objects. The instrument consists of an x‐ray tube with a Pd target operated at up to 40 kV, silicon drift detector (SDD) with a polymer window, and an enlargeable vacuum sampling chamber. With this system, ...

Many enterprises experience difficulty in training people to work with expensive equipment, which is needed for carrying out profitable work tasks (e.g., production line robots). Similar problems are found when work is of a complex and safety-critical nature (e.g., nuclear environments, explosive placement, surgery). A common problem faced by educational institutions concerns the limited availability of expensive robotics equipment, with which students in the didactic program can work, in order to ...

During the last few years, multiple new medical schools have emerged in Chile, associated to the constant preoccupation to provide a good quality medical care. This created the need to evaluate medical training programs and to open a discussion about the attributes that a good physician should have.To evaluate the medical student's perception of the ideal medical doctor profile. An analytical, descriptive and cross sectional study was designed. Eleven second year, 11 third year, nine fourth year, ...

Abstract Background Compared with their ovarian counterparts, serous borderline tumors of the fallopian tube are uncommon, with limited experience about their clinical behaviour. We present a case of serous borderline tumor of the fallopian tube with unusual presentation and summarise all the published cases to date. Case presentation A case of serous borderline tumor of the fallopian tube in a 34-year old patient is presented, incidentally found during routine gynecologic examination. At laparoscopy ...

Parking policies are considered a powerful tool for solving parking problems as well as problems of the transportation system in general (traffic congestion, modal split, etc.). To define parking policy properly, its effects must be estimated and predicted. In this paper, based on stated preference data and using a logistic regression, a model to predict the effects of introducing or changing the parking price and time limitation was developed. The results show that parking prices affect car usage, ...

In this work, and by means of micromagnetic simulations, we study the magnetic properties of toroidal nanomagnets. The magnetization ground state for different values of the aspect ratio between the toroidal and polar radii of the nanotorus has been obtained. Besides, we have shown that the vortex and the in-plane single domain states can appear as ground states for different ranges of the aspect ratio, while a single domain state with an out-of-plane magnetization is not observed. The hysteresis ...

A variety of benign and malignant non-squamous cell neoplasms may affect the larynx. Most of these uncommon laryngeal neoplasms are located beneath an intact mucosa, making diagnosis difficult with endoscopy alone, and sampling errors may occur if only traditional superficial biopsies are performed. In some laryngeal neoplasms, radiologic evaluation allows the correct diagnosis. Hemangiomas have very high signal intensity at T2-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and strong enhancement at both ...

This paper develops a travelers’ route choice behavior model when using an advanced traveler information system (ATIS). The model is tested with data obtained from a computer simulation. The paper's point of departure is that immediately perceived travel time along different routes, previously gained experience, and the degree of preference when choosing a specific route are characterized by fuzziness. The travelers’ route choice behavior model thus developed is based on fuzzy logic. The results ...

We show that the curvature of nanomagnets can be used to induce chiral textures in the magnetization field. Among the phenomena related to the interplay between the geometry and magnetic behavior of nanomagnets, an effective curvature-induced chiral interaction has been recently predicted. In this work, it is shown that magnetization configurations consisting of two structures with opposite winding numbers (vortex and antivortex) appear as remanent states in hollow toroidal nanomagnets. It is shown ...

A discussion on the interaction between skyrmions in a bi-layer system connected by a non-magnetic metal is presented. From considering a free charge carrier model, we have shown that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY ) inter- action can induce attractive or repulsive interaction between the skyrmions depending on the spacer thickness. We have also shown that due to an increasing in RKKY energy when the skyrmions are far from each other, their widths are diminished. Finally, we have obtained ...

The photoconductivity within a wavelength range of 450–1100 nm was determined for a sample of epitaxial delafossite CuFeO2 film grown by pulsed laser deposition. The film thickness was estimated to be 75 nm. The resistance of the films was determined with four-contact van der Pauw's method and using monochromatic illumination of the film. The most significant change in resistance resulted in three rapid lineal conductivity increases at photon energies of ~ 1.5 eV (gap-1), ~ 2.1 eV (gap-2) and ~ 2.5 eV (gap- ...

Curvature of nanomagnets can be used to induce chiral textures in the magnetization field. Here we perform analytical calculations and micromagnetic simulations aiming to analyze the stability of in-surface magnetization configurations in toroidal nanomagnets. We have obtained that despite toroidal vortex-like configurations are highly stable in magnetic nanotori, the interplay between geometry and magnetic properties promotes the competition between effective interactions yielding the development ...

Communicating hydrocephalus secondary to cerebral venous outflow obstruction has been reported in a few patients several months following removal of a TPN catheter. We report the case of an infant who developed this sequal 4 mo after the catheter was removed. We illustrate the techniques used to delineate the type of hydrocephalus. A lumbo-peritoneal shunt was performed to alleviate the condition.

Summary Doppler ultrasound flow examination, strain gauge plethysmography and contrast venography were performed in 160 lower limbs of 80 in-patients. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) was suspected in 87 limbs. Using measurement of venous stop-flow pressure, the Doppler method had an overall sensitivity of 83%. By combined use of Doppler and Plethysmography, sensitivity was increased to 96%. Specificity was 62% and 51%, respectively. With a positive and a negative predictive value of 80% and 73%, respectively, ...

One of the key aims of traffic management is to encourage drivers to follow an efficient routing pattern (i.e. a set of routes that collectively minimise the potential for delays and accidents and possibly also minimise travel distance). At present, little is known about the relative merits of different patterns or how they could be accommodated or encouraged within existing city centre networks. A number of archetypes are compared using total vehicle conflicts and total travel distance as the main ...

Low back pain (LBP) is a prevalent condition associated with disability. Treating patients with LBP becomes further complicated by the potential presence of underlying conditions, such as cancer or traumatic injury, or biopsychosocial aspects. LBP usually has a neuropathic component that must be assessed and treated appropriately. Pharmacological management of LBP requires a thorough knowledge of the available agents and the mechanisms of the LBP. Although there are effective pharmacological treatments ...

Abstract Magnetic skyrmions are quasiparticle-like textures that are topologically different from a single domain magnetization state. Their topological protection, combined with the low current density needed to move them, make these objects relevant to be used as information storage structures. In such a context, the analysis of the interactions between skyrmions is interesting and relevant for future applications. In this work, through micromagnetic simulations and numerical calculations, we ...
