Recent research makes clear that much of the Everglade's flora and fauna have evolved to tolerate or require frequent fires. Nevertheless, restoration of the Everglades has thus far been conceptualized as primarily a water reallocation project. These two forces are directly linked by the influence of water flows on fire fuel moisture content, and are indirectly linked through a series of complex feedback loops. This interaction is made more complex by the alteration and compartmentalization of current ...

Abstract In early 2003 a series of large, wildfire‐related sediment slugs occurred in streams in the south‐eastern Australian alpine region. Back‐pack and boat‐mounted electrofishing were used to measure changes in riverine fish fauna after one particularly large sediment slug which started in an upland stream and then travelled downstream through 200 km of third and fourth order stream. Twelve impact sites and eight control sites were surveyed where there were previous data on fish populations. ...

The water adsorption capacity of desiccant materials may be affected significantly if particulates are present in the air that is to be processed. Air containing environmental tobacco smoke was used to study the effect of particulates. A smoking apparatus was designed by simulating the puffing of a cigarette by a person to generate environmental tobacco smoke. The apparatus can take a puff from a cigarette at 1 min intervals; one puff requires 2 s and entails drawing a total of 35 cm3 of air through ...
