The aim of this study was to use DNA adducts levels, detected by 32P-postlabelling, as a biomarker to assess human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from a coke oven plant and explore the possible association between CYP1A1 MspI, GSTP1, GSTM1 and GSTT1 genotypes, and smoking status on bulky DNA adduct formation. A large amount of inter-individual variation in adduct level was observed among workers with the same job and the same smoking habits. No significant differences were observed ...

Since exposure to ionizing radiation, a risk factor for thyroid cancer, may produce genotoxins potentially eliminated by glutathione-S-transferases, we conducted a case control study to evaluate the role of the GSTM1- and GSTT1-null genotypes and GSTP1 polymorphisms in thyroid cancer. The frequency of GSTP1 Ile/Ile, GSTM1-, and GSTT1-null genotypes was increased in cancer patients when compared with control population. Considering the genotypes over-represented in thyroid cancer patients as potential ...

The objectives of this research were to quantify the impact of organic matter content, soil pH and moisture content on the dissolution rate and solubility of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) in soil, and to develop an empirical model to predict the dissolution kinetics of CuO NPs in soil. CuO NPs were dosed into standard LUFA soils with various moisture content, pH and organic carbon content. Chemical extractions were applied to measure the CuO NP dissolution kinetics. Likewise, as the digital transition of rural tour operators takes place, their marketing initiatives also evolve towards a digital nature, which is why it is crucial to comprehend how the overall calibre of these activities might affect the perception of rural places, while also motivating tourists’ travel intentions and, as a result, promoting the ...

Objective To compare the capacity of mammography, sonoelastography, B-mode ultrasonography and histological analysis to differentiate benign from malignant breast lesions. Materials and Methods A total of 12 histopathologically confirmed breast lesions were documented. The lesions were assessed by means of mammography, B-mode ultrasonography and sonoelastography, and histopathological analysis was utilized as a gold standard. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated. A receiver operating characteristic ( ...

Heart failure (HF) is associated with cardiac autonomic denervation (AD), which can be non-invasively assessed by 123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (123I-mIBG) scintigraphy and has prognostic implications. We aimed to study the relationship between myocardial contractility assessed by global longitudinal strain (GLS) and AD assessed by 123I-mIBG scintigraphy in advanced HF. BETTER-HF is a prospective randomized clinical trial including HF patients (pts) submitted to cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) ...

Zinc (Zn) micronutrient deficiency is a widespread problem affecting crops worldwide. Unlike conventional ionic fertilizers (Zn as salt or chelated forms), Zn-based engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) have the potential to release Zn in a controlled manner, reducing Zn losses through leaching upon application to soil. In this work, composites made of biopolymers (microcrystalline cellulose, chitosan, and alginate) and ZnO nanoparticles [NPs; 4–65% (w/w) Zn] were prepared. Their potential for Zn controlled ...

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) has been demonstrated to improve exercise capacity in acute coronary syndrome (ACS), but not all patients derive the same benefit. Careful patient selection is crucial to maximize resources. To identify in a heterogeneous ACS population which patients would benefit the most with CR, in terms of functional capacity (FC), by using cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). A retrospective analysis of consecutive ACS patients who underwent CR and CPET was undertaken. CPET was ...

Fly ash (FA) from biomass combustion and biological sludge (S), both wastes from the pulp and paper industry, were granulated in different proportions (90% FA+10% S, and 70% FA+30% S w/w, dry weight basis, dw) and used to recover the functionality of soils affected by mining activities (Aljustrel, Iberian Pyrite Belt), with and without the application of municipal solid waste compost (MSWC). Application doses of both mixtures were 2.5, 5.0 and 10% (w/w, dw). These materials corrected soil acidity to circumneutral ...

A mercury-cell chlor-alkali plant operated in Estarreja (North-western Portugal) for 50 years causing widespread environmental contamination. Although production by this process ceased in 2002, mercury contamination from the plant remains significant. The main objective of this study was to investigate mercury impact on the nearby environment and potential risks to local population. To assess the level of contamination soil samples were collected from agricultural fields in the vicinity of the plant, ...

The v-Crk protein was originally isolated as the oncogene fusion product of the CT10 chicken retrovirus. Cellular homologues of v-Crk include Crk, which encodes two alternatively spliced proteins (CrkI and CrkII), and CrkL. Though CrkI/II proteins are elevated in several types of cancer, including breast, the question of whether these Crk adaptor proteins can promote breast cancer has not been addressed. We created a transgenic mouse model that allows the expression of CrkII through the hormonally ...

Piperidine is a 1-ring heterocyclic compound formed from the polyamine cadaverine in the human intestine. Because heterocyclic compounds are routinely used in the promotion of antimicrobial treatment strategies, it was considered whether piperidine could be used against infection with enteric pathogens. This study demonstrates that piperidine treatment prevented the invasion of Salmonella typhimurium into model intestinal epithelium by nearly 95%. In vivo studies also revealed that it increased ...

Activation of the Met receptor tyrosine kinase through its ligand, hepatocyte growth factor, stimulates cell spreading, cell dispersal, and the inherent morphogenic program of various epithelial cell lines. Although both hepatocyte growth factor and epidermal growth factor (EGF) can activate downstream signaling pathways in Madin-Darby canine kidney epithelial cells, EGF fails to promote the breakdown of cell-cell junctional complexes and initiate an invasive morphogenic program. We have undertaken ...
