Small molecules can freely exchange through the NPC, but macromolecules larger than ~40 kDa must be aided across by transport factors, most of which belong to a related family of proteins termed karyopherins (Kaps). These transport factors bind to the disordered phenylalanine-glycine (FG) repeat domains in a family of NPC proteins termed FG nups, and this ...

The effect of confinement on the structure evolution and final morphology during phase separation and gelation of gelatin and maltodextrin was investigated and compared to the structures seen in bulk phase. Emulsion droplets with diameters from 4 to 300 μm were analyzed using confocal laser scanning microscopy and image analysis. With the confocal laser scanning microscope it was possible to follow the entire phase separating process inside the droplets in real-time. The samples were either quenched ...

The drug 4-methylmethcathinone (4-MMC; aka, mephedrone, MMCAT, "plant food", "bath salts") is a recent addition to the list of popular recreational psychomotor-stimulant compounds. Relatively little information about this drug is available in the scientific literature, but popular media reports have driven recent drug control actions in the UK and several US States. Online user reports of subjective similarity to 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, "Ecstasy") prompted the current investigation of ...

The study aim was to describe the temporal course of cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD). We selected 226 persons from 2 longitudinal clinical-pathological studies who were cognitively healthy at baseline, followed at least 4 years (M = 10.2, SD = 3.5), and clinically diagnosed with AD at some point during follow-up. Each evaluation included a battery of 17 cognitive tests from which a previously established composite measure of global cognition was derived. In those who died, a uniform neuropathologic ...

The final microstructure of a phase separating and gelling biopolymer mixture is affected by physical confinement, because the structure evolution is limited by the surrounding surfaces. Here, we used various confining geometries such as microdroplets, parallel cover glasses, and networks of cellulose fibers to analyze the structure evolution and final morphology of mixtures of whey protein isolate (WPI) and gellan gum. The results were evaluated by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and 2D ...

Expansion of medical marijuana use in the US and the recently successful decriminalization of recreational marijuana in two States elevates interest in the specific cognitive effects of Δ(9)tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ(9)THC), the major psychoactive constituent of marijuana. Controlled laboratory studies in nonhuman primates provide mixed evidence for specific effects of Δ(9)THC in learning and memory tasks, with a suggestion that frontal-mediated tasks may be the most sensitive. In this study, adult ...
