Summary Summary The state of knowledge concerning the reproductive biology of zoanthids is reviewed. Colonies in the suborder Macrocnemina, with few exceptions, are gonochoric; those in Brachycnemina are probably basically hermaphroditic but accurate sampling in colonies that fragment is difficult and exceptions by species or populations occur. Two deepsea species of Epizoanthus breed continuously but temperate shallow water zoanthids, and those in the tropics outside ∼15° latitude are iteroparous ...

This is the first report on the successful year-round natural spawning and larval rearing of Epinephelus polyphekadion (Bleeker) in captivity and under hypersaline water conditions of 42-43%0 salinity in the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia. Although the fish spawned naturally once or twice a year during 1992-94 culture period, incorporation of cod-liver oil in the broodstock diet during the 1995 culture period enabled the fish to spawn continuously for 2-3 days in each month during March, April, May ...

Abstract During their first year in captivity, summer flounder Paralicthys denratus were induced to spawn with gonadotropin releasing hormone analogue (GnRHa) implants, injected carp pituitary extract (CPE) or human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) injections. The percentage of fertile eggs was greatest (69%) in CPE‐treated females. CPE, but not GnRHa or hCG, was capable of stimulating oocyte growth (increased follicle diameter during vitellogenesis) followed by ovulation. Fish with maximum ovarian follicle ...

Trawling was carried out over sandy substrates in the shallow (5–15m) and deeper (20–35m) waters of four regions along 250 km of the lower west coast of Australia, during seven consecutive seasons. This yielded 32 752 individuals of the gerreid Parequula melbournensis , which constituted c. 42% of the total number of fish. Densities of P. melbournensis were greatest in the most southern region, reaching a seasonal maximum of 835 fish ha −1 : at one site in that region. Since P. melbournensis is restricted ...

Abstract Female mate preference in a bower‐holding cichlid, Cyathopharynx furcifer , was studied in Lake Tanganyika. Most males held territories with crater‐shaped bowers in sand, but some males held territories without bowers. Territories were distributed adjacently and females visited them to spawn. After engaging in circling behaviour with the male, a female deposited eggs in the bower. Soon after spawning, the female picked the eggs up into her mouth and brooded them in places away from male territories. ...

Pacific herring Clupea pallasi spawn in shallow and intertidal areas. Larval distributions and abundance of three major and several minor stocks were examined to determine if larvae mix among different spawning locations. The surveys were short, intensive, and occurred mainly within the first 30 days of larval life. Each major stock had a discrete larval distribution with continuous larval distributions within stock boundaries. Some overlap of distributions occurred among smaller stocks. Most larvae ...

Very few studies have investigated the occurrence of multiple paternity and sperm competition in amphibians. We studied genetic relatedness within kin groups of tadpoles of an aquatically breeding anuranRana temporariausing allozymes. We collected samples from 52 naturally fertilized spawn clumps produced by single females at three breeding sites in two populations. We estimated relatedness (r) within kin groups, and compared the observed genotype distributions of the tadpoles (on average 23 individuals ...
