This paper presents a novel predictive control scheme for a series-parallel hybrid bus. The proposed scheme uses information from GPS together with a data record of the driving along the bus route to schedule the charging and discharging of the energy storage system. Switching between hybrid and pure electric mode is optimized in a receding horizon scheme based on a prediction model that reflects the uncertainty of the future driving. The benefits of the proposed predictive control scheme are shown ...

Abstract Background ICU survivorship includes a diverse burden of disease. Current questionnaires used for collecting information about health-related problems and their relation to quality of life lack detailed questions in several areas relevant to ICU survivors. Our aim was to construct a provisional questionnaire on health-related issues based on interviews with ICU survivors and to test if this questionnaire was able to show differences between ICU survivors and a control group. Methods Thirty- ...

Extreme floods cause casualties and widespread damage to property and vital civil infrastructure. Predictions of extreme floods, within gauged and ungauged catchments, is crucial to mitigate these disasters. In this paper a Bayesian framework is proposed for predicting extreme floods, using the generalized extreme-value (GEV) distribution. A major methodological challenge is to find a suitable parametrization for the GEV distribution when multiple covariates and/or latent spatial effects are involved ...

The present investigation provides the first systematic empirical tests for the role of politics in academic research. In a large sample of scientific abstracts from the field of social psychology, we find both evaluative differences, such that conservatives are described more negatively than liberals, and explanatory differences, such that conservatism is more likely to be the focus of explanation than liberalism. In light of the ongoing debate about politicized science, a forecasting survey permitted ...

We experimentally compare fast and slow decisions in a series of experiments on financial risk taking in three countries involving over 1700 subjects. To manipulate fast and slow decisions, subjects were randomly allocated to responding within 7 seconds (time pressure) or waiting for at least 7 or 20 seconds (time delay) before responding. To control for different effects of time pressure and time delay on measurement noise, we estimate separate parameters for noise and risk preferences within a random ...

Seven constructed wetlands (0.05–0.69 ha), situated in agricultural catchments (22–267 ha) in the south of Sweden, were studied for two years with two aims: to (i) quantify their function as sinks for particles and phosphorus (P) lost from the catchments, and (ii) investigate to what degree catchment and wetland characteristics and modeled loads (using hydrochemical catchment models) could be used to explain differences in retention between the wetlands. The wetland areas ranged from 0.04 to 0.8% of the ...

The form of P (dissolved or particulate) during different water flows (high and low) and seasons (warm and cold) was investigated using the results of total P (TP) and phosphate analyzed in grab samples that had been collected regularly or occasionally during ...

A family of active distance measures for general convolutional codes is defined. These distances are generalizations of the extended distances introduced by Thommesen and Justesen (1983) for unit memory convolutional codes. It is shown that the error correcting capability of a convolutional code is determined by the active distances. The ensemble of periodically time-varying convolutional codes is defined and lower bounds on the active distances are derived for this ensemble. The active distances ...

This paper is devoted to constructions in which the constituent convolutional codes are woven together in a manner that resembles the structure of a fabric. An iterative decoding scheme for woven convolutional codes is presented. It operates in a window sliding over the received sequence. This exploits the nature of convolutional codewords as infinite sequences and reflects the concept of considering convolutional encoding and decoding as a continuous process. The decoder is analyzed in terms of decoding delay and decoding complexity. Its basic building block is a symbol-by-symbol a posteriori probability (APP) decoder for convolutional codes, which ...

It is shown that an error probability that is exponentially decreasing with the product of the outer and inner code memories can be achieved with a nonexponentially increasing decoding complexity.

Despite the central role that ordinary citizens play as ‘trustors’ (i.e. the actor that places trust) in the literature on news media trust, prior quantitative studies have paid little attention to how ordinary citizens understand and define news media trust. Here, trust tends to be studied from a researcher-defined – rather than an audience-defined – perspective. To address this gap, we investigate how the public describes news media trust in their own words by asking them directly. We analyse 1500 written ...

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder, involving a wide variety of sociobehavioural, linguistic and perceptuomotor abnormalities. The prevalence in the general population is at least 5 in 10,000, with a reported male/female ratio of 3–4/1 (Lamb et al. 2000). Strong evidence from twin and family studies indicate the importance of genetic factors in the development of idiopathic autism (Lamb et al. 2000).
