Many of today's food products addressing specific nutritional, health and wellness needs of human and animal consumers are often very complex structures. Consequently, it is of utmost importance in food engineering research to develop a detailed understanding of the time-dependent transient changes in all of the structural aspects of food matrices from raw material harvesting, to product processing, to the point of breakdown during shelf-life, consumption and final digestion. Food structural understanding ...

We discuss the semantic significance of a puzzle concerning ‘ought’ and conditionals recently discussed by Kolodny and MacFarlane. We argue that the puzzle is problematic for the standard Kratzer-style analysis of modality. In Kratzer’s semantics, modals are evaluated relative to a pair of conversational backgrounds. We show that there is no sensible way of assigning values to these conversational backgrounds so as to derive all of the intuitions in Kolodny and MacFarlane’s case. We show that the ...

Abstract. The Gimballed Limb Observer for Radiance Imaging of the Atmosphere (GLORIA) is an airborne infrared limb imager combining a two-dimensional infrared detector with a Fourier transform spectrometer. It was operated aboard the new German Gulfstream G550 High Altitude LOng Range (HALO) research aircraft during the Transport And Composition in the upper Troposphere/lowermost Stratosphere (TACTS) and Earth System Model Validation (ESMVAL) campaigns in summer 2012. This paper describes the retrieval ...

Abstract Heme oxygenase‐1 ( HO‐1 ) has been demonstrated to play an important role in the regulation of signaling systems, which are involved in the control of cell cycle progression and apoptosis. Recently, a (GT)n dinucleotide repeat polymorphism in the HO‐1 promoter was shown to modulate HO‐1 gene expression. Short (<25 GT) repeats are associated with an increased HO‐1 upregulation after stimulation than are longer repeats. Malignant melanoma (MM) is the most serious cutaneous malignancy with high tendency ...

Volatiles released by pathogenic and nonpathogenic mycobacteria, as well as by mycobacteria-related Nocardia spp., were analyzed. Bacteria were cultivated on solid and in liquid media, and headspace samples were collected at various times during the bacterial lifecycle to elucidate the conditions giving optimal volatile emission. Emitted volatiles were collected by using closed-loop stripping analysis (CLSA) and were analyzed by gas-chromatography-mass-spectrometry. A wide range of compounds was ...

Cells within human skin are permanently exposed to mechanical stretching. Here we present evidence that alterations in cell shape trigger biochemical signaling via MAP kinases in human keratinocytes. In an in vitro attempt we demonstrate a fast but transient activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 in response to cell stretch. This activation is reversed by preincubation with functional blocking antibodies directed towards beta1-integrins. As a second member of MAP kinases, stress- ...

The German discourse particles ‘ja’ and ‘doch’ both mark the information expressed by their host sentence as somehow given, obvious, or uncontroversial (McCready & Zimmermann 2011 call them ‘epistemic particles’). Two things are puzzling: (i) despite its ‘epistemic’ nature, ‘doch’ can appear in imperatives and with performative modals; (ii) despite their similarity, ‘ja’ is unacceptable in imperatives and forces a descriptive reading of modal verbs. We explain (i) by assuming that the performativity of modalized ...

Mammalian neurofilament triplet proteins (68 K, 160 K and 200 K) have been correlated by a biochemical, immunological and protein chemical study. The 160 K and 200 K triplet proteins are intermediate filament proteins in their own right, since they reveal the alpha-helical coiled-coil rod domain analyzed in detail for the 68 K protein. Triplet proteins display two distinct arrays. Their amino-terminal region built analogously to non-neuronal intermediate filament proteins should allow a co-polymerization ...

Monocytes appear to play a central role in inflammatory processes like atherogenesis or lung inflammation both as the progenitors of foam cells and as a potential source of factors mediating further inflammatory processes. However, signals mediating the influx of monocytes into the inflammatory focus remain partly unknown. Secretoneurin (SN) is a more recently characterised 33-amino acid neuropeptide that is co-released from afferent nerve endings together with substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene- ...

We used ERPs to investigate neural correlates of face learning. At learning, participants viewed video clips of unfamiliar people, which were presented either with or without voices providing semantic information. In a subsequent face-recognition task (four trial blocks), learned faces were repeated once per block and presented interspersed with novel faces. To disentangle face from image learning, we used different images for face repetitions. Block effects demonstrated that engaging in the face- ...

Oligomers and polymers (film, fabrics) of the linear aromatic polyester poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) were treated with polyesterases from Thermomyces lanuginosus, Penicillium citrinum, Thermobifida fusca and Fusarium solani pisi. The cutinase from T. fusca was found to release the highest amounts of hydrolysis products from PTT materials and was able to open and hydrolyse a cyclic PTT dimer according to RP-HPLC–UV detection. In contrast, the lipase from T. lanuginosus also showed activity ...

We report two experiments in which participants classified familiarity and rated best-likeness of photorealistic spatial caricatures and anti-caricatures (up to a distortion level of 30%) in comparison to veridical pictures of famous faces (Experiment 1) and personally familiar faces (Experiment 2). In both experiments there was no evidence for a caricature advantage in the behavioural data. In line with previous research, caricatures were perceived as worse likenesses than veridical pictures and moderate ...

The main function of the human sebaceous gland is sebum excretion. Increased sebum levels combined with follicular hyperkeratinization are a prerequisite of acne vulgaris. As peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are known to control lipid metabolism in several human tissues they have been considered to be involved in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris. To investigate the effect of activators of PPAR-α (WY14643), PPAR-γ (rosiglitazone) and PPAR-δ (L-165.041) on basal and staurosporine-induced ...

AimsHeart failure patients are often equipped with implanted devices and are frequently hospitalized due to volume overload. Reliable prediction of imminent fluid congestion has the potential to provide early detection of cardiac decompensation and therefore might be capable of enhancing therapy management. We investigated whether implant-based impedance (Z) measurement is closely correlated with directly assessed extravascular lung water and might thus be useful for patient monitoring.
