This contribution provides a critical review of the CoastView project; a research program designed to develop and quantify video-derived Coastal State Indicators (CSIs) which simplify various aspects of coastal zone management including, coastal protection, navigation and recreation. This paper aims to provide a guide to future applied research projects of this kind. The research program implemented a 'frame of reference' methodology in order to effectively match research outcomes to the needs of ...

Thermal GeO2 oxides up to 136 nm thickness were produced by annealing Ge wafers in pure oxygen at 550 °C and 270 kPa pressure for up to 10 h. The oxidation kinetics followed the Deal–Grove law. Using multisample spectroscopic ellipsometry for a series of five thermal oxides with different thicknesses, the complex dielectric functions of Ge and GeO2 were determined from 0.5 to 6.6 eV, for thin-film metrology applications in Ge-based microelectronics and photonics. The dispersion of the GeO2 layer ...

Graphene/silicon (G/Si) heterostructures have been studied extensively in the past years for applications such as photodiodes, photodetectors, and solar cells, with a growing focus on efficiency and performance. Here, a specific contact pattern scheme with interdigitated Schottky and graphene/insulator/silicon (GIS) structures is explored to experimentally demonstrate highly sensitive G/Si photodiodes. With the proposed design, an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of >80% is achieved for wavelengths ...

A future widespread application of electrochemical energy conversion and storage technologies strongly depends on the substitution of precious metal-based electrocatalysts for the high-overpotential oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions. We report a novel Co/Co–Fe nanoparticles/N-doped carbon composite electrocatalyst (Co/CoxFey/NC) obtained by pyrolysis of CoFe layered double hydroxide (CoFe LDH) embedded in a film of a bisphenol A and tetraethylenepentamine-based polybenzoxazine poly(BA- ...

Plant xylem cells conduct water and mineral nutrients. Although most plant cells are totipotent, xylem cells are unusual and undergo terminal differentiation. Many genes regulating this process are well characterized, including the Vascular-related NAC Domain 7 (VND7), MYB46, and MYB83 transcription factors, which are proposed to act in interconnected feedforward loops (FFLs). Less is known regarding the molecular mechanisms underlying the terminal transition to xylem cell differentiation. Here, we ...

Regulatory landscapes drive complex developmental gene expression, but it remains unclear how their integrity is maintained when incorporating novel genes and functions during evolution. Here, we investigated how a placental mammal-specific gene, Zfp42, emerged in an ancient vertebrate topologically associated domain (TAD) without adopting or disrupting the conserved expression of its gene, Fat1. In ESCs, physical TAD partitioning separates Zfp42 and Fat1 with distinct local enhancers that drive ...

Cysteine-rich receptor-like protein kinases (CRKs) are transmembrane proteins containing two domains of unknown function 26 (DUF26) RLKs in their ectodomain. Despite that CRKs control important aspects of plant development, only few proteins have functionally been characterized. In this work, we analyzed the function of CRK33 by characterizing two insertional lines. The stomatal density and stomatal index were decreased in crk33-2 and crk33-3 plants in comparison to wild-type plants, correlating with ...

Epitaxial Ge layers on a Si substrate experience a tensile biaxial stress due to the difference between the thermal expansion coefficients of the Ge epilayer and the Si substrate, which can be measured using asymmetric X-ray diffraction reciprocal space maps. This stress depends on temperature and affects the band structure, interband critical points, and optical spectra. This manuscripts reports careful measurements of the temperature dependence of the dielectric function and the interband critical ...

We propose an efficient simulation algorithm based on the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) method for studying electrohydrodynamic phenomena in electrolyte fluids. The fluid flow is mimicked with DPD particles while the evolution of the concentration of the ionic species is described using Brownian pseudo particles. The geometrical, electronic and optical properties of alpha,alpha'-quater(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (4EDOT) and alpha,alpha'-quater(thiophene) (4T) are studied by quantum-chemical calculations; the computed vibronic spectra at low and room temperature (RT) are compared to experiment. Our results suggest that the better resolved RT absorption spectrum of 4EDOT in comparison with 4T is not due to the molecule's rigid nature as commonly assumed but due to very similar out-of-plane modes in the electronic ...

Fructose 2,6‐bisphosphate is physiologically one of the most potent activators of yeast 6‐phosphofructo‐1‐kinase. The glycolytic oscillation observed in cell‐free cytoplasmic extracts of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae responds to the addition of fructose 2,6‐bisphosphate in micromolar concentrations by showing a pronounced decrease of both the amplitude and the period. The oscillations can be suppressed completely by 10 μM and above of this activator but recovers almost fully (95%) to the unperturbed ...

Low micromolar human A-FABP inhibitors were found by utilizing a fluorescence polarization assay, X-ray crystallography and modeling. The carbazole- and indole-based inhibitors displayed approximately 10-fold preferences over human H-FABP and E-FABP, and are highly selective against I-FABP. Vascularized composite allotransplantation may now be considered a viable treatment option in patients with complex craniofacial and limb defects. However, the field is still in its infancy, and challenges continue to exist. These challenges, most notably the adverse effects of lifelong immunosuppression, must be weighed against the benefits of the procedure. Improvements in this risk-benefit ratio can be achieved by achieving tolerance and preventing rejection. Five decades after Dr. Joseph E. ...

Abstract Lianas rely on trees for support and access to high‐light positions in the forest canopy, but the implications for how lianas explore the canopy compared to trees remain understudied. We present an in situ forest canopy study to test the hypotheses that: (1) lianas favour leaf display over stem investment compared to trees and (2) lianas have greater potential to colonize non‐shaded, high‐light areas effectively than trees. We compared branches of 16 liana species with those of 16 sympatric ...
