This paper describes a novel frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar concept, where methods like nonuniform sparse antenna arrays and multiple-input multiple-output techniques are used to improve the angular resolution of the proposed system. To demonstrate the practical feasibility using standard production techniques, a prototype sensor using a novel four-channel single-chip radar transceiver in combination with differential patch antenna arrays was realized on off-the-shelf RF substrate. Furthermore, ...

A method for simplifying the mathematical models describing the dynamics of tracers (e.g.13C, 31P, 14C, as used in NMR studies or radioactive tracer experiments) in (bio-)chemical reaction systems is presented. This method is appropriate in the cases where the system includes reactions, the rates of which differ by several orders of magnitude. The basic idea is to adapt the rapid-equilibrium approximation to tracer systems. It is shown with the aid of the Perron–Frobenius theorem that for tracer systems, ...

In sinusoidal parameter-estimation problems for measurement applications, discrete spectra with high dynamic range are often under investigation. To suppress unwanted interference effects (ldquoleakagerdquo) in the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) spectrum, the application of data windows is common practice. In this paper, the influence of windowing on the bias and variance of the frequency and phase estimates, calculated via the DFT, is investigated. Furthermore, the effect of choosing different ...

Whenever harsh environmental conditions such as high temperatures, accelerations, radiation, etc., prohibit usage of standard temperature sensors, surface acoustic wave-based temperature sensors are the first choice for highly reliable wireless temperature measurement. Interrogation of these sensors is often based on frequency modulated or frequency stepped continuous wave-based radars (FMCW/FSCW). We investigate known algorithms regarding their achievable temperature accuracy and their applicability ...

A refined algorithm together with a computer procedure for determining the complete set of non–negative, steady–state fluxes in biochemical reaction systems of any complexily, with or without some flux rates fixed, is given. It is shown that this set is a convex polyhedron, which may or may not be bounded. The algorithm is illustrated by several examples; one of them concerns intermediary metabolism. A computer cade in standard C is presented.

Tomographic microwave imaging is employed as a method of nondestructive testing in a wide range of industrial applications, e.g., for quality control. However, many low-permittivity materials, such as gaseous substances or foam with high air content, do not provide sufficient contrast to the environment to be measured with existing systems. This article introduces a 77-79-GHz high-resolution tomography system that facilitates the characterization of materials with relative permittivity close to ...

The method described below recovers zinc, a valuable metal that is present in high concentrations in filter ash from the thermal treatment of waste, and returns the filter ash stripped of heavy metals to the combustion process in order to destroy organic substances. On an industrial scale, the heavy metals in the filter ash were mobilized by means of hydrochloric acid in the acidic fluids produced in the flue-gas scrubbing process without the addition of further chemicals. Reinhard Feger, Andreas Haderer, Stefan Schuster, Stefan Scheiblhofer, Andreas Stelzer,
The measurement of different target parameters using radar systems has been an active research area for the last decades. Particularly target angle measurement is a very demanding topic, because obtaining good measurement results often goes hand in hand with extensive hardware effort. Especially for sensors used in the mass market, e.g. in automotive applications like adaptive cruise control this may be prohibitive. Therefore we address target localization using a compact frequency-modulated continuous- ...

Volker Schuster, Stefan Seregard,
Ligneous conjunctivitis (McKusick 217090) is a rare form of chronic conjunctivitis characterized by the development of firm fibrin-rich, woody-like pseudomembraneous lesions mainly on the tarsal conjunctivae. Less frequently, similar lesions may occur on other mucous membranes of the body indicating that these manifestations are part of a systemic disease. Histopathological findings from affected humans and (plasminogen-deficient) mice indicate that wound healing, mainly of injured mucosal tissue, ...

Inhibition of mitochondria prevents cell death in kidney epithelial cells by intra- and extracellular acidification.BackgroundNephrotoxic substances like cisplatin or ochratoxin A (OTA) induce cell death in human proximal tubule–derived cells (IHKE cells). Mitochondria play a significant role in apoptosis and loss of their function may influence OTA- or cisplatin-induced apoptosis. Extracellular pH also plays an important role in tumor genesis. Therefore, we investigated the role of mitochondria and ...

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) activates cells by binding to the membrane-bound IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) and subsequent formation of a glycoprotein 130 homodimer. Cells that express glycoprotein 130, but not the IL-6R, can be activated by IL-6 and the soluble IL-6R which is generated by shedding from the cell surface or by alternative splicing. Here we show that cholesterol depletion of cells with methyl-beta-cyclodextrin increases IL-6R shedding independent of protein kinase C activation and thus differs from ...
