Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is now the key component for monitoring glycaemic control in diabetes mellitus (DM), especially for its close relation to diabetes complications. However, treatment goals in terms of HbA1c concentrations have been difficult to define and compare because of lack of international standardization and lack of common reference values of HbA1c concentrations. The aims of our study were to document our HbA1c analysis and make it traceable to international reference laboratories with ...

Measurement of blood glucose is a frequent test in Danish physicians' offices. We describe here a new design of external quality assessment wherein fresh, unstabilized whole-blood samples were analyzed by the physicians' office methods and by a hospital laboratory comparison method (glucose dehydrogenase assay, calibrated against NIST 909a). This approach was used in the offices of 171 general practitioners in our county during a 5-year period. The first survey, in 1992, revealed unsatisfactory performance ...

Introduction. Hypoxic tumor cells are radioresistant, therefore, identification of hypoxia is crucial. Hyperpolarized magnetic resonance spectroscopy (HPMRS) allows real time measurements of the conversion of pyruvate to lactate, the final step of anaerobic energy production, and may thus allow non-invasive identification of hypoxia or treatment-induced changes in oxygenation. The aim of the study was to investigate the usefulness of HPMRS as a means to assess tumor hypoxia and its dynamics during ...

A Danish population of 5699 individuals (60–74 yr old) was screened by fasting blood glucose (FBG) and interviewed about known diabetes. The distribution of FBG in individuals not known to have diabetes showed no sex difference or significant variation with age. Fasting hyperglycemia (FH), defined as FBG ≥ 7 mM in subjects without a history of diabetes, was found in 1.7% of men and women. Known diabetes (KD) had a prevalence of 3.9 and 5.0% in men and women, respectively. The prevalence rates of FH and ...

Iodine intake is important for thyroid function. Iodine content of natural waters is high in some areas and occurs bound in humic substances. Tap water is a major dietary source but bioavailability of organically bound iodine may be impaired. The objective was to assess if naturally occurring iodine bound in humic substances is bioavailable. Tap water was collected at Randers and Skagen waterworks and spot urine samples were collected from 430 long-term Randers and Skagen dwellers, who filled in ...

Background Oxygen is liberally administered in intensive care units ( ICU s). Nevertheless, ICU doctors’ preferences for supplementing oxygen are inadequately described. The aim was to identify ICU doctors’ preferences for arterial oxygenation levels in mechanically ventilated adult ICU patients. Methods In April to August 2016, an online multiple‐choice 17‐part‐questionnaire was distributed to 1080 ICU doctors in seven Northern European countries. Repeated reminder e‐mails were sent. We assessed the atrioventricular conduction at long-term follow-up after ASA. Methods In patients with a pacemaker implanted for high-grade atrioventricular block after ASA, the atrioventricular conduction was assessed prospectively by ECGs and 48-h Holter recordings. Abstract Remdesivir (GS-5734; VEKLURY) is a single diastereomer monophosphoramidate prodrug of an adenosine analog (GS-441524). Remdesivir is taken up by target cells and metabolized in multiple steps to form the active nucleoside triphosphate (GS-443902), which acts as a potent inhibitor of viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerases. Remdesivir and GS-441524 have antiviral activity against multiple RNA viruses. Here, we expand the evaluation of remdesivir’s antiviral activity to members of the families Flaviviridae , ...

Direct evidence of Mycobacterium abscessus complex (MABSC) biofilm in the human lung has not previously been demonstrated. Biofilms are microcolonies of bacteria, imbedded in extracellular matrix, providing stability and tolerance to antibiotics and the body's innate and adaptive defences [1]. In 92 consecutive patients admitted with suspected acute deep venous thrombosis, (DVT), the screening value of a new thermographic equipment, DeVeTherm, was evaluated with phlebography as a reference. The predictive value was 0.29 (0.19-0.41) of a positive thermography, and 0.68 (0.43-0.87) of a negative thermography. These results do not justify application of DeVeTherm as a screening method for DVT.
