This study aimed to enhance our understanding of neuropsychological functioning in children with early-treated phenylketonuria (PKU) and assess the relative impact of white matter abnormalities (WMA) and neurotransmitter deficiencies on cognitive functions in this population. The study consisted of 33 children with early-treated PKU and 34 healthy control children aged between 7 to 18 years. All children had a neuropsychological evaluation that included measures of general intelligence, attention, ...

Introduction Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a potential therapeutic target to reverse obesity. The purpose of this study was to determine whether primary precursor cells isolated from human adult subcutaneous white adipose tissue (WAT) can be induced to differentiate in-vitro into adipocytes that express key markers of brown or beige adipose, and whether the expression level of such markers differs between lean and obese young adult males. Methods Adipogenic precursor cells were isolated from lean ...

B19 parvovirus is pathogenic in humans, causing fifth disease, transient aplastic crisis, some cases of hydrops fetalis, and acquired pure red cell aplasia. Efforts to develop serologic assays and vaccine development have been hampered by the virus's extreme tropism for human bone marrow and the absence of a convenient culture system. We constructed recombinants containing either the major (VP2) or minor (VP1) structural proteins of B19 in a baculovirus-based plasmid, from which the polyhedrin gene ...

Treatment of a range of bis(thiourea) ligands with inert organometallic transition-metal ions gives a number of novel complexes that exhibit unusual ligand binding modes and significantly enhanced anion binding ability. The ruthenium(II) complex [Ru(η(6)-p-cymene)(κS,S',N-L(3)-H)](+) (2b) possesses juxtaposed four- and seven-membered chelate rings and binds anions as both 1:1 and 2:1 host guest complexes. The X-ray crystal structure of the labile copper(I) complex CuCl(1-pyridin-2-yl-3-p-tolyl-thiourea)2 comprises three different isomers and has profound implications for work on the understanding and prediction of low-symmetry crystal packing. A chloroform co-crystal of one of these isomers is also reported along with a related compound of (6-methyl-benzothiazol-2-yl)-pyridin-2-yl-amine.

This study demonstrates a methodological technique that can be used to specify the structure of the informal organization of medical practice and its effect on the practice behavior of physicians. This approach uses routinely collected clinical data to construct and analyze consultation networks among physicians who share a common practice setting—in the current study, hospital services. The focus of the analysis is on the identification of structurally equivalent groups of physicians who share ...

The development of policies regarding computer-based medical technology is hampered by a lack of knowledge about the process by which such applications are adopted and utilized by physicians. This study was designed to test a model of the process by which physicians change their practice behavior by utilizing a computer-based hospital information system (HIS). A structural model was developed, estimated, and tested using data from 270 members of the medical staff of a 1160 bed, private teaching hospital. ...

During pregnancy, neuroendocrine control of prolactin secretion is markedly altered to allow a state of hyperprolactinaemia to develop. Prolactin secretion is normally tightly regulated by a short-loop negative-feedback mechanism, whereby prolactin stimulates activity of tuberoinfundibular dopamine (TIDA) neurones to increase dopamine secretion into the pituitary portal blood. Dopamine inhibits prolactin secretion, thus reducing prolactin concentrations in the circulation back to the normal low level. ...

In proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR), retinal pigment epithelial cells, fibroblasts, or other proliferating cells form contractile membranes in the vitreous cavity of the eye, resulting in traction retinal detachment. Retroviral vector-mediated transfer is a suitable method to transduce the herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase (HSV-tk) gene into proliferating cells in PVR, allowing for the selective killing of these cells. To determine the potential of gene transduction in the environment of ...
