In their treatise on meta-organization, Ahrne and Brunsson theorize a distinctive organizational form, the association of organizations. Meta-organizations have the properties of formal organizations—boundaries set by determinations of membership, goals, a centre of authority, and ways of monitoring and sanctioning member behaviors. The theory draws a strong distinction between meta-organizations and networks, suggesting that similarity among members is the primary characteristic of meta-organizations, ...

Since Evan's (1965) call for a theory of inter-organisational relations (IOR), research into IOR has proliferated as inter-organisational practice has become more commonplace. We argue that knowledge about IOR has developed in fragmented and highly differentiated ways, despite periodic attempts to review knowledge and set an agenda for future research. Building on Culpan's (2009) prospectus for research into strategic business alliances in this journal, we argue for a more systematic, concerted programme ...

The impact of the NHS reforms, and the resulting purchaser-provider split, has refocused attention on the relationship between management and medicine in acute hospitals. It is timely to assess the explanatory power of various theoretical models regarding the management-medicine interface. ABSTRACT Cause maps are coded following many different conventions. It is therefore arguable that there can be no general approach to their analysis. Indeed the interpretation and meaning of the analysis can only be undertaken in relation to both the purpose of the research and the theoretical basis of the form of representation to be analysed, be it a cause map, network, or any other graphical picture. Given these reservations, this article outlines a number of techniques for the analysis of cause ...

ABSTRACT This paper aims to explore how an « Ideas Management program », COPE, used by senior decision makers in a number of organisations, act as a Decision Support System. Based upon two extensive case studies of decision makers using the COPE system, rather than a more conventional DSS, benefits of this type of system for these decision makers are explored. These insights not only suggest some further characteristics worth bearing in mind during the design and development of DSSs, but also support ...

Cognitive mapping is an attempt to operate Personal Construct psychology beyond the use of Repertory Grids. Concepts (short phrases) are linked to form chains of argumentation, essentially explanations leading to consequences. Any concept can be linked ...

Abstract This paper examines the presumptions behind, and methods within, two approaches toward the analysis of decision problems – Conflict Analysis and Strategic Choice. These offer complementary perspectives, based respectively on particular notions of conflict and uncertainty. It is suggested that these perspectives can usefully be combined in order to provide more effective ways of helping with complex decision problems, and some preliminary forms of decision model are proposed.

Meta-organization theory has shied away from a systematic consideration of the complexities and consequences of resource acquisition patterns, instead assuming member organizations furnish the resources their associations require. The theory reflects empirical enquiry, which has focused primarily on the most visible form of resources, the association’s finance budget and staffing. This paper develops a conceptual framework to show the wider range of ways in which meta-organizations acquire resources ...

Describes the process by which an NHS provider Unit sought to make quality assurance and improvement a shared concern of professionals and managers. Development of a quality assurance strategy and related action plans pulled together existing quality initiatives in the Unit and set new initiatives in an agreed framework for organizational development. Thus the strategy filled the gap between a statement of organizational values and detailed quality auditing practices at the sharp end. Through the ...

Recent ‘models’ of public management see strategy as providing a broad direction, or framework, within which learning and responsiveness are encouraged. Strategic direction is deliberately designed and yet is expected to emerge through the ‘routine’ decision‐making activity of managers at all levels in the organization. In this article, an approach to managing strategy development, review and renewal in public service organizations is proposed, and methods for testing it are described. The work was ...

We present a combined analysis of XMM–Newton, Chandra and ROSAT observations of the isolated neutron star RX J0720.4−3125, spanning a total period of ∼7 yr. We develop a maximum likelihood periodogram for our analysis based on the ΔC statistic and the maximum likelihood method, which are appropriate for the treatment of sparse event lists. Our results have been checked a posteriori by folding a further BeppoSAX data set with the period predicted at the time of that observation: the phase is found ...
