Unbiased next-generation sequencing (NGS) approaches enable comprehensive pathogen detection in the clinical microbiology laboratory and have numerous applications for public health surveillance, outbreak investigation, and the diagnosis of infectious diseases. However, practical deployment of the technology is hindered by the bioinformatics challenge of analyzing results accurately and in a clinically relevant timeframe. Here we describe SURPI (“sequence-based ultrarapid pathogen identification”), ...

Sixty-seven patients referred to a sleep laboratory with a tentative diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea were examined with a device designed for home use as an apnea screening system. Direct comparison was made between data obtained by the portable device and by data acquired simultaneously with standard polysomnographic techniques. The portable recorder measured nasal/oral airflow, chest wall movement, cardiac rhythm, and blood oxygen saturation. There was no significant difference in the number ...

Although metagenomics has been previously employed for pathogen discovery, its cost and complexity have prevented its use as a practical front-line diagnostic for unknown infectious diseases. Here we demonstrate the utility of two metagenomics-based strategies, a pan-viral microarray (Virochip) and deep sequencing, for the identification and characterization of 2009 pandemic H1N1 influenza A virus. In this article, we bring together relational arts practice (Kester, 2004) with collaborative ethnography (Campbell and Lassiter, 2015) in order to propose art not as a way of teaching children literacy, but as a lens to enable researchers and practitioners to view children's literacies differently. Both relational arts practice and collaborative ethnography decentre researcher/artist expertise, providing an understanding that "knowing" is embodied, material and tacit (Ingold, 2013). This has led us ...

Abstract Movement is a key driver of the distribution of animals and the structure of populations, communities, and ecosystems. Habitat loss and fragmentation can compromise movement and contribute to population declines. However, there is often insufficient knowledge about when, why, and where animals move, particularly in highly modified environments. We present results from an 8‐year study on the movement behavior of Murray cod Maccullochella peelii , an Australian freshwater fish species that ...

Control comparator selection is a critical trial design issue. Preclinical and clinical investigators who are doing trials of stroke recovery and rehabilitation interventions must carefully consider the appropriateness and relevance of their chosen control comparator as the benefit of an experimental intervention is established relative to a comparator. Establishing a strong rationale for a selected comparator improves the integrity of the trial and validity of its findings. This Stroke Recovery ...

Abstract Objectives Knee range of motion (ROM) at the point of discharge from acute care is used as a clinical indicator to benchmark performance between hospital services after total knee replacement (TKR). The utility of the current benchmark, including whether discharge ROM varies between hospitals, is unknown. This study aimed to determine whether the benchmark [≥80 degrees flexion and ≤5 degrees fixed flexion (extension)] is realistic and whether the service provider is a predictor of knee ROM. Dark matter lighter than 10 GeV/c$^2$ encompasses a promising range of candidates. A conceptual design for a new detector, DarkSide-LowMass, is presented, based on the DarkSide-50 detector and progress toward DarkSide-20k, optimized for a low-threshold electron-counting measurement. Sensitivity to light dark matter is explored for various potential energy thresholds and background rates. These studies show that DarkSide-LowMass can achieve sensitivity to light dark matter down to the solar neutrino ...
