FMT has demonstrated clinical efficacy for a growing number of conditions. High rates of systemic infection in transplant recipients, and recent cases of sepsis caused by antibiotic-resistant pathogens transmitted through FMT, highlight the need to improve FMT safety. Commensal gut microbes can substantially reduce sepsis risk through interactions with both pathogens and the host. In addition to screening for pathogens, assessment of donor material should consider the composition and structure of ...

Seasonal climate forecasts (SCFs) have potential to improve productivity and profitability in the sugar industry. However, they are often underutilised due to insufficient evidence of the economic value of the forecasts, especially when there is a level of uncertainty associated with SCFs. Here, we demonstrate the value of integrating SCFs at various forecast quality (skill) levels into seasonal irrigation planning for sugarcane farming. A seasonal forecast system based on ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) ...

The therapeutic potential of faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is under investigation for a range of inflammatory conditions. While mechanisms of benefit are poorly understood, most models rely on the viability of transplanted microbes. We hypothesised that protocols commonly used in the preparation of faecal transplants will substantially reduce the number, diversity and functional potential of viable microbes.Stools from eight screened donors were processed under strict anaerobic conditions, ...

TPS11076 Background: Over-expression of mdm2 is a major block to p53 activation in soft tissue sarcoma (STS). AMG-232 specifically inhibits human MDM2-p53 interactions in vitro and in vivo, thereby activating p53. Resistance mechanisms to MDM2 inhibition by AMG-232 is through accumulation of MDM2 and MDMX. However, DNA damaging agents, such as radiotherapy (RT), promote MDMX degradation and lead to sustained p53 activation, which is critically important for radiation-induced tumor cell killing in ...

Adipocytes store nutrients as lipid droplets (LDs), but how they organize their LD stores to balance lipid uptake, storage, and mobilization remains poorly understood. Here, using Drosophila fat body (FB) adipocytes, we characterize spatially distinct LD populations that are maintained by different lipid pools. We identify peripheral LDs (pLDs) that make close contact with the plasma membrane (PM) and are maintained by lipophorin-dependent lipid trafficking. pLDs are distinct from larger cytoplasmic ...

Abstract: Modern oncology requires precise tumor assessment to drive effective therapies. Image-guided biopsies are the current standard of care to characterize molecular alterations safely and effectively, but have inherent limitations due to tumor heterogeneity and accessibility, as well as from procedure related risks. Advancements in radiomics analysis provide the potential to retrieve useful incremental information to characterize molecular alterations from standard imaging data in a cost-effective ...
