Populations of bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes in Portsmouth A1- and B,-soil material were affected in different ways by repeated enrichment with ferulic, p-coumaric, p-hydroxybenzoic or vanillic acids. Responses varied with type of soil material and phenolic acid, phenolic acid concentration, and inorganic nutrient status of the soil. Populations changed more frequently in B1- than in A1-soil material. Phenolic acids were readily metabolized by microorganisms, sometimes without detectable population ...

Constraining the range of chemical weathering rates in soils is important because weathering can have a strong influence on surface and ground water chemistry, soil nutrient release, neutralization of acidity, and preparation of rock for physical erosion. Determination of chemical weathering rates in soils developed from glacial till can be advantageous relative to other soils, because soil ages are more easily determined. To allow measurement of real differences in weathering rates across sites, ...

In the last few years, a wealth of information has become available relating to the targets of vaccinia virus (VACV)-specific CD4+ T cell, CD8+ T cell and antibody responses. Due to the large size of its genome, encoding more than 200 different proteins, VACV represents a useful model system to study immunity to complex pathogens. Our data demonstrate that both cellular and humoral responses target a large number of antigens and epitopes. This broad spectrum of targets is detected in both mice and ...

Cenozoic pelagic ('red') clays of predominantly eolian and hydrogenous origin blanket much of the central North Pacific ocean basin. The eolian component is a key indicator of past paleoclimatic conditions; thus, Cenozoic atmospheric circulation can potentially be reconstructed through provenance studies of Pacific red clays, provided there are precise age controls. Methods commonly employed in the past to date red clay cores have included cobalt accumulation rates, ichthyolith biostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, ...

Abstract Acid rain and repeated harvests reduce the amount of calcium available for forest growth. Ecosystem budgets suggest that the exchangeable Ca pool is insufficient for forest regeneration, yet young stands appear to mobilize more than enough Ca from the soil to meet their needs. Extractions of soil parent materials indicate that apatite provides a previously unappreciated source of plant-available Ca for forests in New Hampshire, upstate New York, and Maine with granitoid parent materials. ...

Knowledge about the mechanisms of regeneration of the lymphatic vasculature after surgical trauma is essential for the development of strategies for the prevention and therapy of lymphedema. This paper presents an algorithm that uses equivalence and membership queries to learn the class of k-term DNF formulas in time n · 2O(k), where n is the number of input variables. This improves upon previous O(nk) bounds and allows one to learn DNF formulas of O(log n) terms in polynomial time. We present the algorithm in its most natural form as a randomized algorithm and then show how recent derandomization techniques can be used to make it deterministic. The algorithm is an exact learning algorithm, ...
