The present paper reports on the combination of a chemical model for the gas phase chemistry of the atmospheric boundary layer, with a Lagrangian model for the long-range transport of air pollutants. The resulting combined chemistry/transport model is applied in a case study where polluted air is transported toward Scandinavia. Calculations show good agreement with measured ozone concentrations, and strongly suggest that the measured ozone concentrations cannot be due to Scandinavian precursor emissions ...

Abstract. Trends in cirrus cloud cover have been estimated based on 16 years of data from ISCCP (International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project). The results have been spatially correlated with aircraft density data to determine the changes in cirrus cloud cover due to aircraft traffic. The correlations are only moderate, as many other factors have also contributed to changes in cirrus. Still we regard the results to be indicative of an impact of aircraft on cirrus amount. The main emphasis of ...

Background Mood disorders (including major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder) affect 10% to 20% of the population. They range from brief, mild episodes to severe, incapacitating conditions that markedly impact lives. Multiple approaches have shown considerable sharing of risk factors across mood disorders despite their diagnostic distinction. Methods To clarify the shared molecular genetic basis of major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder and to highlight disorder-specific associations, ...

Across multiancestry groups, we analyzed Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) associations in over 176,000 individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) versus controls. We demonstrate that the two diseases share the same protective association at the HLA locus. HLA-specific fine-mapping showed that hierarchical protective effects of

Abstract Aim To study whether a simple targeted intervention could reduce unwarranted antibiotic treatment in near‐term and term neonates with suspected, but not confirmed early‐onset sepsis. Methods A quality improvement initiative in three Norwegian neonatal intensive care units. The intervention included an inter‐hospital clinical practice guideline for discontinuing antibiotics after 36‐48 hours if sepsis was no longer suspected and blood cultures were negative in neonates ≥ 34+0 weeks of gestation. ...

A systematic review of cell models of acquired drug resistance not involving genetic manipulation showed that 80% of cell models had an inverse resistance relationship between cisplatin and paclitaxel. Here we systematically review genetically modified cell lines in which the inverse cisplatin/paclitaxel resistance phenotype has resulted. This will form a short list of genes which may play a role in the mechanism of the inverse resistance relationship as well as act as potential markers for monitoring ...

Oxaliplatin is widely regarded as being active in cisplatin-resistant cancer. We undertook a systematic review of the literature to identify, describe and critique the clinical and pre-clinical evidence for the use of oxaliplatin in patients with "cisplatin-resistant" cancer. We identified 25 pre-clinical cell models of platinum resistance and 24 clinical trials reporting oxaliplatin based salvage therapy for cisplatin-resistant cancer. The pre-clinical data suggests that there is cross-resistance ...

Abstract Many mechanisms of cisplatin resistance have been proposed from studies of cellular models of resistance including changes in cellular drug accumulation, detoxification of the drug, inhibition of apoptosis and repair of the DNA adducts. A series of resistant models were developed from CCRF‐CEM leukaemia cells with increasing doses of cisplatin from 100 ng/ml. This produced increasing resistance up to 7‐fold with a treatment dose of 1.6 μg/ml. Cisplatin resistance in these cells correlated ...

Cisplatin produces good responses in solid tumours including small cell lung cancer (SCLC) but this is limited by the development of resistance. Oxaliplatin is reported to show activity against some cisplatin-resistant cancers but there is little known about oxaliplatin in SCLC and there are no reports of oxaliplatin resistant SCLC cell lines. Studies of drug resistance mainly focus on the cellular resistance mechanisms rather than how the cells develop resistance. This study examines the development ...

The development of a drug-resistant cell line can take from 3 to 18 months. However, little is published on the methodology of this development process. This article will discuss key decisions to be made prior to starting resistant cell line development; the choice of parent cell line, dose of selecting agent, treatment interval, and optimizing the dose of drug for the parent cell line. Clinically relevant drug-resistant cell lines are developed by mimicking the conditions cancer patients experience ...

The cytotoxicity of PARP inhibitors olaparib, veliparib, and CEP-8983 were investigated in two P-glycoprotein (P-gp) over-expressing drug-resistant cell models (IGROVCDDP and KB-8-5-11). IGROVCDDP and KB-8-5-11 were both resistant to olaparib and resistance was reversible with the P-gp inhibitors elacridar, zosuquidar, and valspodar. In contrast, the P-gp overexpressing models were not resistant to veliparib or CEP-8983. Olaparib and veliparib did not induce protein expression of P-gp in IGROVCDDP ...

A two‐dimensional zonally averaged time dependent model is developed to describe the transport and chemical transformations of species in the troposphere and the stratosphere. The constituents are advected by the residual Eulerian circulation, which is shown to equal the diabatic circulation under certain circumstances. Prescribed values of temperatures and diabatic heating rates are used to calculate the diabatic velocities. Slow diffusion, with K yy = 3 × 10 9 cm 2 s −1 and K zz = 10 3 cm 2 s −1 , is included ...

In future years, the chlorine abundances in the earth's stratosphere are expected to increase as a result of man's activities. Currently accepted photochemistry suggests that this perturbation to the natural stratosphere will modify stratospheric ozone due to photochemical interactions. Quantitative estimates of the effect of this anthropogenic perturbation on the stratospheric ozone column abundance have largely been performed with one‐dimensional models. Current (1985) one‐dimensional models predict ...

Antarctic ozone depletion is estimated in a 2‐D global model as a result of increase in chlorine levels from 1 ppb to 2.7 ppb and an increase in bromine levels from 15 ppt to 30 ppt. The adopted increase is assumed to be the anthropogenic influence on the stratospheric concentrations of chlorine and bromine species in 1985. Heterogeneous formation of ClO from the reaction between ClONO 2 and HCl is included in the calculations, hypothesizing this is the dominant reaction path for chlorinated species ...
