Feces-stained eggshells, diarrhea, and typhlitis were identified in two commercial laying flocks in Ohio. Hens with diarrhea had spirochetes in cecal lumina and crypts. On culture, the spirochetes were motile and non-hemolytic, did not produce indole, had 12 to 15 axial filaments, were 9.2 to 11.7 microns in length and 240 to 370 nm in diameter, and had a wavelength of 5.1 to 6.5 microns on transmission electron microscopy.

In an effort to devise inexpensive and sustainable production of ethanol fuel, experiments were conducted to establish conditions for Pichia stipitis NRRL Y-7124 to ferment a membrane treated wood hydrolysate derived from sugar maple to produce ethanol. The degree of aeration required to effectively utilize xylose, produce ethanol, and minimize xylitol formation as well as the optimal hydrolysate concentration were the conditions examined. P. stipitis produced the highest concentrations of ethanol ...

The electric power generation of co-located offshore wind turbines and wave energy converters along the California coast is investigated. Meteorological wind and wave data from the National Buoy Data Center were used to estimate the hourly power output from offshore wind turbines and wave energy converters at the sites of the buoys. The data set from 12 buoys consists of over 1,000,000 h of simultaneous hourly mean wind and wave measurements. At the buoys, offshore wind farms would have capacity ...

The advantages of combining offshore wind and wave energy into a single farm include reduced hours of zero power output and reduced interhour variability. Both advantages facilitate grid integration of variable renewables. The power output profile of a combined farm with wind and wave is substantially different from a 100% offshore wind energy farm or a 100% wave energy farm. The different power output profile of combined farms with a higher frequency of hourly power output near the annual capacity ...

Renewable electric power sources like wind and solar have been shown from a resource perspective to have significant potential to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions associated with the electric power sector. However, the intermittency of these resources is often cited as a barrier to their large scale integration into the grid. In this review, we provide a framework for understanding the body of literature that has been devoted to the behavior and reliability of intermittent renewables and discuss ...

Purpose To characterize the number and functional status of CD4 + CD25 + regulatory T cells (Tregs) in patients with metastatic melanoma (MM) and renal cell carcinoma (RCC) treated with high-dose bolus interleukin-2 (IL-2). Patients and Methods Patients with MM or RCC treated with high-dose bolus IL-2 (600,000 IU/kg every 8 hours) at a single center provided pre- and post-treatment whole blood specimens. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated by Ficoll density gradient centrifugation, separated ...

This paper identifies the location of an “ideal” offshore wind energy (OWE) grid on the U.S. East Coast that would (1) provide the highest overall and peak‐time summer capacity factor, (2) use bottom‐mounted turbine foundations (depth ≤50 m), (3) connect regional transmissions grids from New England to the Mid‐Atlantic, and (4) have a smoothed power output, reduced hourly ramp rates and hours of zero power. Hourly, high‐resolution mesoscale weather model data from 2006–2010 were used to approximate wind ...

Methods: Eligible candidates with mild visual field loss (automated perimetric mean deviation [PMD] −2 to −7 dB) were randomized to receive either acetazolamide or matching placebo tablets. Randomized participants were offered participation in a supervised dietary program. The primary outcome ...

ABSTRACT The California generation fleet manages the existing variability and uncertainty in the demand for electric power (load). When wind power is added, the dispatchable generators manage the variability and uncertainty of the net load (load minus wind power). The variability and uncertainty of the load and the net load are compared when 8790 MW of wind power are added to the California power system, a level expected when California achieves its 33% renewable portfolio standard, using a data set ...

Two intestinal spirochete isolates obtained from chickens with diarrhea were examined by electron microscopy, biochemical tests, rRNA gene restriction pattern analysis, and multilocus enzyme electrophoresis. One isolate (strain 91-1207/C1) was pathogenicity tested in vivo in chickens. The chicken spirochetes were morphologically indistinguishable from Serpulina innocens and Serpulina hyodysenteriae and phenotypically similar to S. innocens. However, the chicken spirochetes could be distinguished ...

The study purpose was to examine vision-specific and overall health-related quality of life (QOL) at baseline in Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Treatment Trial patients who were newly diagnosed and had mild visual loss. We also sought to determine the associations between vision-specific QOL scores and visual symptoms, visual function, pain, headache-related disability, and obesity.

Abstract Duncan Pritchard has argued that luck is fundamentally a modal notion: an event is lucky when it occurs in the actual world, but does not occur in more than half of the relevant nearby possible worlds. Jennifer Lackey has provided counterexamples to accounts which, like Pritchard's, only allow for the existence of improbable lucky events. Neil Levy has responded to Lackey by offering a modal account of luck which attempts to respect the intuition that some lucky events occur in more than ...

This article explores the difference between parental involvement, where parents' activity levels at school are primarily structured by schools, and parental engagement, where parents have a more active voice in how they take part in what goes on in schools. This difference is underscored as a means of illuminating ways of addressing the issue of racialized disproportionality in special education and acts of school discipline, particularly in urban settings. We highlight the ways schools need to ...

Special education teachers' practice is influenced by an understanding of special education policy and knowledge of implementation practice. This study examined the perceptions of nine special education teachers related to their interpretation of assessment, progress monitoring, and transition mandates in a large urban district. Qualitative methods included a constant comparative approach to coding of teachers' open-ended interview data. The themes that emerged in this study highlight ways in which ...

Recovery of cardiac function is the holy grail of heart failure therapy yet is infrequently observed and remains poorly understood. We identified cell-specific transcriptional signatures of recovery, most prominently in macrophages and fibroblasts. Within ...

Abstract Some low-lying small island states are in danger of being rendered uninhabitable or even completely submerged by climate change-induced sea-level rise. However, even before their physical destruction, the socio-economic viability of small island states might be compromised by the current design of the law of the sea which provides for ambulatory baselines and maritime limits and thus the shrinking of maritime zones with sea-level rise. This article examines the legal avenues open to small ...

This article draws parallels between the concept of “Black lives matter” and the efforts of caregivers to advocate for the value of the lives of their children who have disabilities. The authors identify three key concepts that undergird their argument: first, the concept of systemic bias as built in to the hierarchical valuing of different disabilities and the role of this bias in the valuing of parents’ voices; second, the ways in which stigmatized identity markers intersect to intensify bias; ...

Abstract “I know that p but it is possible that not-p” sounds contradictory. Some philosophers, notably David Lewis, have taken this as evidence that knowledge requires infallibility. Others have attempted to undermine that inference by arguing that there is a plausible pragmatic explanation of why such sentences sound odd, and thus do not undermine fallibilism. I argue that the proffered pragmatic explanations fail and I raise challenges for any possible pragmatic explanation of the character of ...
