ABSTRACT: We interviewed 51 blood donors in four major US metropolitan areas subsequently found to have had antibodies to human T‐cell lymphotropic virus (anti‐HTLV) in late 1984‐early 1985. Sixteen donors (31%) reported that they or a sexual contact had a history of blood transfusion. Twelve donors (24%) reported that they or a sexual contact used intravenous drugs. Ten donors (20%) were blacks born in the southeastern US. Four of the male donors (15%) reported homosexual contact. The most common characteristic ...

Disc electrophoretically homogeneous spinach-chloroplast cytochrome b6 was found to be a lipoprotein whose redox potential was essentially unchanged during isolation. These results further support the hypothesis of Triton X-1004M urea, pH 8, as a useful extracting medium for membrane lipoproteins. Cytochrome b6 was found to have a heme equivalent dry weight of 1 mol of heme per 60 000 g. Of this, 20 000 g was lipid-extractable. The molecular weight was 60 000 with a partial specific volume of 0. ...

Mixtures of the isomerase and epimerase enzymes were separated by preparative electrophoresis in a 'Pevikon' block. Initial velocities of the isomerase and epimerase reactions were measured at 290 nm, at 340 nm, and by the cysteine carbazole method. The Km values for isomerase from spinach, spleen, muscle, ...

Purification of cytochrome b6 was pursued to further develop rational technology for purification, proof of purity, and study of properties of membrane proteins. Cytochrome b6 was purified—the first time from any source—from spinach chloroplast membranes; yield of pure cytochrome b6 was 30% of that found in ethanol-extracted particles. The three-step procedure (pH 8) employed: (I) extraction in Triton X-100-4 M (optionally 2 M) urea, (II) chromatography in a Bio-Gel A-1.5m Column (Triton X-100-4 M urea). ...

Canadian normative data for the Medical Outcomes Study 36-item short form (SF-36) have recently been published. However, there is evidence from other countries to suggest that regional variation in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) may exist. We therefore examined the SF-36 data from nine Canadian centres for evidence of systematic differences.Bayesian hierarchical modelling was used to compare the differences in the eight SF-36 domains and the two summary component scores within each of the ...

Kevin Connolly, Grant Allan, Stuart McIntyre,
In support of its ambitious target to reduce CO2 emissions the Scottish Government is aiming to have the equivalent of 100% of Scottish electricity consumption generated from renewable sources by 2020. This is, at least in part, motivated by an expectation of subsequent employment growth in low carbon and renewable energy technologies; however there is no official data source to track employment in these areas. This has led to a variety of definitions, methodologies and alternative estimates being ...

The introduction of a Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) support mechanism has spurred development of small-scale domestic renewable electricity generation throughout Great Britain (GB), however the spatial pattern of uptake has been uneven, suggesting that local, as well as between neighbourhood, factors may be at important. As well as confirming that local socio-economic factors, including wealth, housing type and population density are found to be important in explaining uptake of this policy, local "green" attitudes – ...

Three experiments were undertaken to develop methods for determining digestible energy, dry matter and protein of diets and feed ingredients for juveniles (5–15 g/fish) of the Australian freshwater fish, silver perch. The first experiment compared stripping, dissection and settlement as methods of collecting faeces. Stripping was not a suitable method for collecting digesta from juvenile silver perch ≤10 g/fish; insufficient sample was obtained and regurgitation of food contaminated samples. Digestible ...
