ABSTRACT Porous objects of hydroxyapatite (HA) were prepared by mixing sodium chloride as channeling agent with ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) as a binder and hydroxyapatite powder. After hot isostatic pressing (HIP) and dissolving the channeling agent, the bioceramic showed an interconnecting porosity with pore diameters in the range of 160–220 µm. The method can be used for any material that is insoluble in water. Such objects are promising for bone regeneration because the interconnecting ...

Transverse impact tests were conducted on the lower legs of 30 human volunteers and on 18 embalmed human tibiae. The impact was produced by an instrumented hammer and the response was monitored by an accelerometer. The apparent flexural wave velocity, measured from the force and acceleration records, showed significant negative correlations with the ages of both the male and female volunteer groups. The decrease in the velocity with increasing age was more pronounced in the female group. Two patients ...

Using and comparing kinetic theory and second-order Chapman-Enskog hydrodynamics, we study the nonconformal dynamics of a system undergoing Bjorken expansion. We use the concept of ``free-streaming fixed lines'' for scaled shear and bulk stresses in nonconformal kinetic theory and hydrodynamics, and show that these fixed lines behave as early-time attractors and repellors of the evolution. In the conformal limit, the free-streaming fixed lines reduce to the well-known fixed points of conformal Bjorken ...

In this article, there are 18 sections discussing various current topics in the field of relativistic heavy-ion collisions and related phenomena, which will serve as a snapshot of the current state of the art. Section 1 reviews experimental results of some recent light-flavored particle production data from ALICE collaboration. Other sections are mostly theoretical in nature. Very strong but transient magnetic field created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions could have important observational ...

The detection of gravitational waves from GW170817 has provided a new opportunity to constrain the equation of state (EOS) of neutron stars. In this article, we investigate the possible existence of quarks inside the neutron star core in the context of GW170817. The nucleon phase is treated within the relativistic nuclear mean-field approach where we have employed a fully comprehensive set of available models, and the quark phase is described in the Bag model. We show that the nucleonic EOSs which ...

We study the dissipative evolution of (0+1)-dimensionally expanding media with Bjorken symmetry using the Boltzmann equation for massive particles in relaxation-time approximation. Breaking conformal symmetry by a mass induces a non-zero bulk viscous pressure in the medium. It is shown that even a small mass (in units of the local temperature) drastically modifies the well-known attractor for the shear Reynolds number previously observed in massless systems. For generic nonzero particle mass, neither ...

We calculate, to first order in opacity, the energy loss by incorporating viscous corrections in the single-particle phase-space distribution function within relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics. We consider Grad's 14-moment and the Chapman-Enskog-like methods for the nonequilibrium distribution functions. Our numerical results for the charm quark radiative ...

The hydrodynamic results are compared with the exact solution of the Boltzmann equation with a collision term in relaxation time approximation. While the evolution of the hydrodynamic moments of the distribution function (i.e. of the energy momentum tensor) can be described with high accuracy ...

Proper management of waste is a major problem in most of the metropolitan areas. Composting is one of the oldest and simplest methods of organic waste stabilization. It is a self-heating biological conversion, which generates suitable end products such as fertilizers, substrates for mushroom cultivation and bio-gas (methane). The thermophilic phase is a very dynamic phase where high microbial activity leads to accelerated degradation of organic matter. This phase also sanitizes the compost. The aim ...

We present a complete set of multiparticle correlation observables for ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. These include moments of the distribution of the anisotropic flow in a single harmonic, and also mixed moments, which contain the information on correlations between event planes of different harmonics. We explain how all these moments can be measured using just two symmetric subevents separated by a rapidity gap. This presents a multi-pronged probe of the physics of flow fluctuations. ...

Lymphangioma circumscriptum (LC) is a form of lymphangioma characterised by benign dilation of lymphatic channels, which affects the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Derivations of relativistic second-order dissipative hydrodynamic equations have relied almost exclusively on the use of Grad's 14-moment approximation to write $f(x,p)$, the nonequilibrium distribution function in the phase space. Here we consider an alternative Chapman-Enskog-like method, which, unlike Grad's, involves a small expansion parameter. We derive an expression for $f(x,p)$ to second order in this parameter. We show analytically that while Grad's method leads to the violation of the experimentally ...

In particular, this removes the long-standing ambiguity in the relaxation ...
