南海トラフ巨大地震によって沈降が予測されている宿毛臨海低地において沖積コアを採取し,LGMの開析谷を埋積する沖積層の特徴と堆積シークエンスの検討をした.松田川開析谷はLGMに形成され,その後の後氷期海進により,9.8kaに標高-30mに海水が到達し,エスチュアリー環境へと変化した.その後も海水準は上昇し続けて内湾泥底環境となり,7.5kaに最高水深時となった.7.3kaに起こった南九州の鬼界カルデラ噴火により,給源に近い宿毛湾周辺においてもK-Ah火山灰が厚く降灰し,その直後に大規模なラハールが発生した.その結果,水中二次堆積物が急激に堆積した.7.0ka以降にデルタの成長が他の地域に先行して活発化したが,これは大規模なK-Ah火山灰の影響と考えられる.SKMコアから得られた過去1万年間の海面変動情報に基づくならば,宿毛湾地域は南海トラフ巨大地震によって一時的に沈降するものの,長期的に見るとそれらの沈降量は相殺されると理解される.

宿毛市では綿密な肺癌登録により肺癌症例がほぼ全例把握されている.過去7年間に宿毛市で発見された肺癌症例106例 (40-79歳) を対象に住民肺癌検診の有用性について検討した.まず発見動機別に検診発見群46例と非検診発見群60例に分けて比較した.検診発見肺癌は, 発見率10万対99.9, 標準化発見比1, 04, 1期肺癌割合74%, 切除率74%, 絶対的治癒切除率57%, 5年生存率55%であり, 検診発見群の予後は非検診発見群に比べて有意に良好であった.しかし, 全症例の検診受診歴を調べてみると, 検診問発見例が20例あり, これらは著しく予後不良であった.そこで, 検診間発見肺癌による1engthbiasを消去するために, 検診受診歴から, 前回検診受診群59例と前回検診未受診群47例に分けて比較した.5年生存率は前回検診受診群で44%, 未受診群で16%で, 生存期間中央値はそれぞれ3年11カ月と1年5カ月であり, 両群の生存期間中央値には有意差を認めた.以上より, 注意の行き届いた肺癌検診を経年受診すれば肺癌の死亡率は低下することが示唆された.
