Background and objective . Botulinum toxin type A (BtxA) injection and modified constraint-induced movement therapy (mCIMT) are both promising approaches to enhance recovery after stroke. The combined application of these 2 promising modalities has rarely been studied. The aim was to investigate whether combined BtxA and mCIMT would improve spasticity and upper extremity motor function more than BtxA plus conventional rehabilitation in chronic stroke patients with upper extremity spasticity. Methods. ...

Background: Ankle arthritis can cause substantial pain and functional limitation. Previous studies have indicated that five weekly intra-articular injections of hyaluronate were safe and effective in the treatment of ankle osteoarthritis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect and safety of three weekly injections of hyaluronate in patients with unilateral ankle arthritis. Methods: Fifty patients who had had unilateral ankle pain for at least six months and were classified radiographically ...

Colorectal cancer is harmful to the patient's life. The treatment of patients is determined by accurate preoperative staging. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) played an important role in the preoperative examination of patients with rectal cancer, and artificial intelligence (AI) in the learning of images made significant achievements in recent years. Introducing AI into MRI recognition, a stable platform for image recognition and judgment can be established in a short period. This study aimed to ...

Thin films of Ti(C,N) were prepared by chemical vapour deposition onto cemented tungsten carbide substrates. It was found that the growth rate of the Ti(C,N) coatings increased with the total flow rate of the reactant gas and with the deposition temperature. The microstructure and morphology of the Ti(C,N) coatings vary with their deposition temperature and composition. The composition of the Ti(C,N) determines the extent of the secondary growth features, and the characteristic morphology of the ...

Twenty-five different temperature-sensitive point mutations at 20 sites in the lysozyme gene of bacteriophage T4 have been identified. All of the mutations alter amino acid side chains that have lower than average crystallographic thermal factors and reduced solvent accessibility in the folded protein. This suggests that the amino acids with well-defined conformations can form specific intramolecular interactions that make relatively large contributions to the thermal stability of the protein. Residues ...

Considerable experimental evidence is in support of several aspects of the mechanism that has been proposed for the catalytic activity of lysozyme. However, the enzymatically catalyzed hydrolysis of polysaccharides proceeds over 5 orders of magnitude faster than that of model compounds that mimic the configuration of the substrate in the active site of the enzyme. Although several possible explanations for this rate enhancement have been discussed elsewhere, a definitive mechanism has not emerged. ...

Abstract Multiple replacements at amino acid position 3 of bacteriophage T4 lysozyme have shown that the conformational stability of the protein is directly governed by the hydrophobicity of the residue substituted (Matsumura, M., Becktel, W. J., and Matthews, B. W. (1988) Nature 334, 406-410). Of the 13 mutant lysozymes made by site-directed mutagenesis, two variants, one with valine (I3V) and the other with tyrosine (I3Y), were crystallized and their structures solved. Abstract DNA damage induced by benzene reactive metabolites is thought of as an important mechanism underlying benzene hematotoxicity and genotoxicity, and genetic variation in cell-cycle control genes may contribute to susceptibility to chronic benzene poisoning (CBP). Using a case-control study that included 307 benzene-poisoned patients and 299 workers occupationally exposed to benzene in south China, we aimed to investigate the association between genetic polymorphisms of p53 and p21 and the ...

Two types of Sb-doped SnO2 films on titanium substrate were prepared by the combination of electro-deposition and dip-coating (Ti/SnO2-Sb2O4/SnO2-Sb2O4) and single dip-coating (Ti/SnO2-Sb2O4), respectively. The surface morphology and crystalline structure of both film electrodes were characterized using X-ray diffractometry(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). XRD spectra indicate that the rutile SnO2 forms in two films and a TiO2 crystallite exists only in Ti/SnO2-Sb2O4 electrode. SEM images ...

Six designed mutants of T4 lysozyme were created in an attempt to create putative salt bridges on the surface of the protein. The first three of the mutants, T115E (Thr 115 to Glu), Q123E, and N144E, were designed to introduce a new charged side chain close to one or more existing charged groups of the opposite sign on the surface of the protein. In each of these cases the putative electrostatic interactions introduced by the mutation include possible salt bridges between residues within consecutive ...

The pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of bupivacaine in solution and in liposome preparations following subcutaneous administration were studied in rats. Multilamellar vesicles entrapping bupivacaine solution were prepared. The local anaesthetic effect was estimated by the tail-flick test in Wistar rats treated with 1 mg bupivacaine in 0.2-mL preparations. Plasma concentrations of bupivacaine were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. The results showed that both bupivacaine ...
