Fe-Co-B layers deposited on Ni-Fe seedlayer exhibited a high in-plane anisotropy field H/sub k/ of 280 Oe caused by inclined incident angle of sputtered particles. Ni-Fe/Si double seedlayer with low surface energy led to increase the effect of inclined incident angle. For more increase of the H/sub k/ in Fe-Co-B layer, a control of surface energy in Ni-Fe seedlayer was investigated. An improvement of closest packing plane (111) crystallites orientation led to reduce the surface energy in Ni-Fe layer. ...

The objective of this study was to gather data on the incidence of Clostridium botulinum spores in selected consumer-convenience food products. The incidence of spores of C. botulinum in 100 samples of each of four categories of commercially available convenience foods was determined. These categories included (i) “boil-in-the-bag” foods, (ii) vacuum-packed foods, (iii) pressurized foods, and (iv) dehydrated and freeze-dried foods. Of the 400 samples analyzed, one was found to contain the spores of C. ...

Cardiac chronotropic response to epidermal growth factor (EGF) was assessed in chick embryonic ventricular cell aggregates. EGF at a concentration of 10 ug/mL but not at 5 ug/mL produced a significant (p less than 0.05) increase in cardiac beating rate. This was evident within 10 min, reached a peak at about 15 min and remained at that level for 1.5 hr or the rest of the observation period. The effect of EGF on cardiac automaticity was reduced but not abolished at a lower temperature (22oC) that is ...

The objective of this study was to determine whether the antineoplastic agent doxorubicin (adriamycin) affects the microtubule system in isolated cardiac cells. Embryonic chick heart cultures were exposed to adriamycin concentrations of 40, 80, or 200 μm for 3, 12, or 24 h before fixation prior to immunoflourescence. Adriamycin produced marked distortions in the normal microtubule system. This was a function of adriamycin concentration and the duration of the exposure to adriamycin. Even when adriamycin ...

A complex of 18-membered macrolide antibiotics has been discovered in the fermentation broth of strain AB718C-41. The producing culture, isolated from a soil sample collected in Hamden, Connecticut, was identified as a strain of Dactylosporangium aurantiacum and was designated D. aurantiacum subsp. hamdenensis subsp. nov. The antibiotic complex was produced in a New Brunswick 150-liter fermentor using a medium consisting of glucose, soybean oil, soybean flour, beef extract and inorganic salts. Several ...
