Two hundred twenty-eight adnexal masses during pregnancy were discovered among 37,159 deliveries occurring between January 1, 1983 and October 31, 1988 at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu. Hydatid cysts of morgagni (45.6%) occurred most frequently, followed by benign cystic teratomas (15.8%), epithelial cystadenomas (15.4%), and paraovarian cysts (13.6%). There were no malignant or borderline tumors. The patients were categorized as 22.1% part Hawaiian, 18.5% white, 17% Filipino, ...

The degree to which the resolution of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection parallels exposure to other factors, particularly those related to nutritional status, is a relatively unexplored area of research. We established a cohort of women for long-term follow-up to examine the association of serum retinol, carotenoid, and tocopherol concentrations with the clearance of incident cervical HPV infection. Interviews and biological specimens were obtained at baseline and at 4-month intervals. At each ...

Abstract Human papillomavirus (HPV), the primary cause of cervical cancer, is also associated with the development of anal cancer. Relatively little is known about the epidemiology of anal HPV infection among healthy females and its relationship to cervical infection. We sought to characterize anal HPV infection in a cohort of adult women in Hawaii. Overall, 27% (372 of 1,378) of women were positive for anal HPV DNA at baseline compared with 29% (692 of 2,372) with cervical HPV DNA. Among women with ...

The question of how much bias a coalition of faulty players can introduce into distributed sampling protocols in the full information model was first studied by Ben-Or and Linial in 1985. They focused on the problem of collective coin-flipping, in which a set of n players wish to use their private randomness to generate a common random bit b in the presence of t(n) faulty players, such that the probability that $$b=0$$ (and 1) are at least $$\varepsilon $$ for some constant $$\varepsilon >0$$ . They showed that ...

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of whole-body passive vibration exercise and its differences from aerobic exercise on body composition, bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC).Obese middle-aged women (n=33 out of 45) with 34±3% body fat completed the training protocol. They were randomly assigned into diet (n=9; control group), diet plus whole-body vibration exercise (n=13; vibration group), and diet plus aerobic exercise (n=11; aerobic group) groups and ...

Even though exercise hemorheology at hypoxic condition has been considered as a good tool to understand clinical hemorheology, there have been limited studies reported. Previous researches showed that hemorheological variables are closely correlated with oxygen delivery capacity during exercise. Th e present study investigated hypoxic responses including RBC deformability and aggregation, metabolic parameters and complete blood cell counts at various hypoxic conditions during cycling exercise and ...

Evaluation of metabolic parameters and cardiac function is important to determine the decrease in aerobic exercise capacity under hypoxic conditions. However, the variations in metabolic parameters and cardiac function and the reasons for the decrease in aerobic exercise capacity under hypoxic conditions have not been clearly explained. The purpose of this study was to compare the responses between sea level and various acute normobaric hypoxic conditions on metabolic parameters and cardiac function ...

Bitcoin has become the most successful cryptocurrency ever deployed, and its most distinctive feature is that it is decentralized. Its underlying protocol (Nakamoto consensus) achieves this by using proof of work, which has the drawback that it causes the consumption of vast amounts of energy to maintain the ledger. Moreover, Bitcoin mining dynamics have become less distributed over time. Towards addressing these issues, we propose SpaceMint, a cryptocurrency based on proofs of space instead of proofs ...

Ring signatures, introduced by [RST01], are a variant of digital signatures which certify that one among a particular set of parties has endorsed a message while hiding which party in the set was the signer. Ring signatures are designed to allow anyone to attach anyone else’s name to a signature, as long as the signer’s own name is also attached. But what guarantee do ring signatures provide if a purported signatory wishes to denounce a signed message—or alternatively, if a signatory wishes to later ...

Deniable encryption (Canetti et al., Crypto 1996) enhances secret communication over public channels, providing the additional guarantee that the secrecy of communication is protected even if the parties are later coerced (or willingly bribed) to expose their entire internal states: plaintexts, keys and randomness. To date, constructions of deniable encryption—and more generally, interactive deniable communication—only address restricted cases where only one party is compromised (Sahai and Waters, ...

Abstract Voters are understandably concerned about election security. News reports of possible election interference by foreign powers, of unauthorized voting, of voter disenfranchisement, and of technological failures call into question the integrity of elections worldwide. This article examines the suggestions that “voting over the Internet” or “voting on the blockchain” would increase election security, and finds such claims to be wanting and misleading. While current election systems are far from ...

Laparoscopic removal of adnexal masses has been facilitated by the use of commercially available retrieval bags. Masses up to 18 cm can be removed using zipper storage bags. Masses with greater diameters have required laparotomy or techniques that do not isolate the mass from the peritoneal cavity. By using larger bags available in the operative suite, even the very large adnexal mass can be isolated from the peritoneal cavity and extracted via laparoscopy.A 46-year-old nulligravida presented with ...

We provide an overview of some of the security issues involved in securely implementing Lalley and Weyl's "Quadratic Voting" (Lalley and Weyl, Quadratic voting, 2016), and suggest some possible implementation architectures. Our proposals blend end-to-end verifiable voting methods with anonymous payments. We also consider new refund rules for quadratic voting, such as a "lottery" method.

Secure multiparty computation (MPC) protocols enable n distrusting parties to perform computations on their private inputs while guaranteeing confidentiality of inputs (and outputs, if desired) and correctness of the computation, as long as no adversary corrupts more than a threshold t of the n parties. Existing MPC protocols assure perfect security for $$t\le \lceil n/2\rceil -1$$ active corruptions with termination (i.e., robustness), or up to $$t=n-1$$ under cryptographic assumptions (with detection of ...

This Article examines how the legality of governmentally compelled decryption can be surprisingly sensitive to technological nuances. It overviews the reasoning behind a collection of cases that have shaped the doctrine to date on compelled decryption and the Fifth Amendment, and categorizes past cases into four archetypal patterns. Building upon this, the Article examines the sensitivity of the doctrine to technological change by means of “technological hypotheticals:” that is, by identifying assumptions ...

Microchips are widely used to separate circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from whole blood by virtues of sophisticated manipulation for microparticles. Here, we present a chip with an 8 μm high and 27.9 mm wide slit to capture cancer cells bound to 3 μm beads. Apart from a higher purity and recovery rate, the slit design allows for simplified fabrication, easy cell imaging, less clogging, lower chamber pressure and, therefore, higher throughput. The beads were conjugated with anti-epithelial cell adhesion ...
