A supernova close enough to the Earth is a spectacular event: it can appear as a “new star” as luminous as Venus, or even more, visible for several days. The rate of Galactic supernovae is expected to be of about one in 30 years, with a fraction visible to the naked eye; however in all the history of human civilization only seven supernovae in the Milky Way have been reported, the last two (1572 and 1604) during Galilei’s life. The supernova of 1604, today called Kepler’s Supernova, was observed by ...

R. Bandiera,

A scenario for the origin of Kepler's supernova remnant is presented. According to this scenario the progenitor was a massive runaway star, subject to strong mass loss. Due to the interaction of the wind with the interstellar medium, a bow shock has formed in the direction of the stellar motion. Using the available data on the remnant, various constraints on the progenitor's wind can be set. A search has been carried out, among classes of known runaway objects to determine the nature of the progenitor. ...

Observations with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) have enhanced our knowledge of nearby supernova (SN) remnants with ages younger than 500 yr by establishing Cassiopeia A and the remnant of Tycho’s SN as very-high-energy (VHE) γ -ray sources. The remnant of Kepler’s SN, which is the product of the most recent naked-eye SN in our Galaxy, is comparable in age to the other two, but is significantly more distant. If the γ -ray luminosities of the remnants of Tycho’s and Kepler’s SNe are ...

S N Henbest,

The fluid dynamical model of Gull (1973a, b) predicts that the radio emission of young supernova remnants occurs in instabilities at the boundary between the ejected mass and the 'swept-up' interstellar medium, and that no central energy source is necessary. High resolution radio observations of the thickness, polarization properties and structure of the shells of such objects provide a test for these theories, and also enable an upper limit to be set on the flux from point sources within the shell ...

A number of young supernova remnants (SNRs) are now known to have nonthermal X-ray spectra. The steepness of the X-ray emission suggests that it is synchrotron from TeV electrons, and if this is the case, efficient shock acceleration is likely occurring in these objects. Here we use a model of nonlinear diffusive shock acceleration to fit the broad-band emission from SN1006, Tycho’s, and Kepler’s SNRs.
