The structure-activity relationships of azetidine-based DPP IV inhibitors will be discussed in detail in the following review. The azetidine-based DPP IV inhibitors can be divided into three main subtypes, the 2-cyanoazetidines, 3-fluoroazetidines and 2-ketoazetidines. These subtypes have been explored and structure-activity relationships have been established by several groups. Several compounds within each of these subtypes display sub micromolar potency against DPP IV. The most potent cyanoazetidines ...

The increasing interest in the measurement of serum C-reactive protein in relation to the risk stratification of patients with chest pain has demonstrated the need for more sensitive routine methods of measurement and an accurate definition of the reference range. We report the determination of a reference range in serum samples from 491 blood donors using a particle enhanced turbidimetric immunoassay that has been modified to offer better imprecision within the reference range. The median values ...

Cassava (CAS) porridge has low energy density and is a poor source of several nutrients. Its energy density and nutrient composition is normally improved by blending it with other flours. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of hydrothermally-treated (HTT) finger millet on nutrient composition, sensory attributes and starch digestibility of cassava porridge. Composite flour had higher protein, fibre, lipid and mineral content than cassava flour. The high α-amylase activity of HTT finger ...

Hydrothermally-treated (HTT) finger millet was prepared by tempering the grains twice with water (10:1) followed by incubation at about 25–30°C in a woven polypropylene sack for 10 days. Hydrothermally-treated finger millet was darker and had higher α-amylase activity and lower starch digestibility than native (NAT) grains. The HTT finger millet was composited with wheat flour and used to prepare bread. Composite dough had higher dough stability, dough development time and degree of softening but lower ...

Millions of workers around the world are exposed to respirable crystalline silica. Although silica is a confirmed human lung carcinogen, little is known regarding the cancer risks associated with low levels of exposure and risks by cancer subtype. However, little is known regarding the disease risks associated with low levels of exposure and risks by cancer subtype.

Amarins N. Heeringa, Calvin Wu, Susan E. Shore,

Temporal coding of auditory stimuli is critical for understanding communication signals. The bushy cell, a major output neuron of the ventral cochlear nucleus, can “phase-lock” precisely to pure tones and the envelopes of complex stimuli. Bushy cells are also putative recipients of brainstem somatosensory projections and could therefore play a role in perception of communication signals because multisensory integration is required for such complex sound processing. Here, we examine the role of multisensory ...

Abstract Young adults currently obtain driver’s licenses at a substantially lower rate than previous generations. In a handful of recent studies, scholars have evaluated this trend by investigating the association of various factors, primarily personal characteristics and the built environment, with driver’s licensing. However, these studies have examined a limited set of possible explanatory factors and in some cases used only descriptive statistical analyses. To explore the causes of the licensing ...

Dillon T. Fitch, Calvin Thigpen, Susan Handy,

The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of stress stemming from proximity to automobile traffic on bicycling to elementary and junior high school. A growing body of evidence shows that students who walk or bike to school have higher levels of overall physical activity. Turning around the decline in active travel to school in the U.S. could thus produce improvements in the health and wellbeing of students. Despite considerable research on the influence of the urban environment on walking ...

Thirteen out of nineteen single plant cabbage (Brassica oleracea) selections from a clubroot-resistant breeding population with known variation in glucosinolate composition yielded embryos from cultured anthers. The highest embryo yield was obtained with a line that contained the lowest content of total glucosinolates and which was free of the glucosinolate hydrolysis product, goitrin. Of 191 regenerants examined from five selections, 23 haploids, 105 diploids, 162 tetraploids, and 1 aneuploid were ...

Abstract Abstract Shear field-flow fractionation (shear FFF) is described as an FFF system in which shear forces are responsible for migration perpendicular to flow. It is shown that a desirable configuration for shear FFF is a concentric cylinder system with one cylinder rotating. After providing the relevant theoretical framework of FFF, the equations of Shafer et al. describing shear migration are simplified and applied to the limiting case of very thin annular spaces to get tractable retention ...
