Elevated proinflammatory cytokines are associated with greater COVID-19 severity. We aimed to assess safety and efficacy of sarilumab, an interleukin-6 receptor inhibitor, in patients with severe (requiring supplemental oxygen by nasal cannula or face mask) or critical (requiring greater supplemental oxygen, mechanical ventilation, or extracorporeal support) COVID-19.We did a 60-day, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multinational phase 3 trial at 45 hospitals in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, ...

The effect of organic loading on the performance of a mechanically stirred anaerobic sequencing biofilm batch reactor (ASBBR) has been investigated, by varying influent concentration and cycle period. For microbial immobilization 1-cm polyurethane foam cubes were used. An agitation rate of 500 rpm and temperature of 30±2 °C were employed. Organic loading rates (OLR) of 1.5–6.0 g COD l−1 d−1 were applied to the 6.3-l reactor treating 2.0 l synthetic wastewater in 8 and 12-h batches and at concentrations ...

Abstract Hybrid materials were prepared incorporating silica networks by the sol–gel process into the poly(amide‐ b ‐polyether) block copolymer PEBAX®. PEBAX®/silica hybrids were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X‐ray diffraction. The pervaporation of phenol from dilute aqueous solutions through hybrid membranes was investigated. Films prepared with lower silica contents showed better dispersed inorganic networks and ...

ABSTRACT Intracellular Mycobacterium leprae infection modifies host macrophage programming, creating a protective niche for bacterial survival. The milieu regulating cellular apoptosis in the tissue plays an important role in defining susceptible and/or resistant phenotypes. A higher density of apoptotic cells has been demonstrated in paucibacillary leprosy lesions than in multibacillary ones. However, the effect of apoptotic cell removal on M. leprae -stimulated cells has yet to be fully elucidated. ...

Abstract The present investigation reports the microencapsulation of the essential oil from the fruits of Pterodon emarginatus by spray drying using gum arabic and maltodextrin. X-ray diffraction studies established that the essential oil was entrapped within the microcapsules rather than being adsorbed onto the surface. The morphology of the microcapsules was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The particle size (Sauter [3,2]) and particle size distribution of microcapsules were also determined. ...

Pterodon emarginatus Vogel, Fabaceae, is a tree species commonly known as "sucupira-branca". It is a popular medicinal plant in the Brazilian cerrado (Savanna). This study investigates the chemical variability of the essential oils from fruits of P. emarginatus. The fruits were collected from five sites in the Brazilian Cerrado and their essential oils were analyzed by GC/MS. The results obtained by Principal Component and Cluster Analysis identified two groups: cluster I containing β-caryophyllene ...

Abstract In contrast to the increasing aquaculture production of mussels worldwide, production in the European Union (EU) has shown a decreasing trend over the last two decades. Aquaculture production of mussels in the EU peaked in the late 1990s at more than 600 000 tonnes; by 2016, production volume had dropped by 20% to 480 000 tonnes. As mussel production represents more than ⅓ of EU aquaculture production, this decrease is an important contributor to the stagnation of EU aquaculture. Previous ...

The main goal of this study was to histologically evaluate the healing of surgically created defects on the tibiae of adult male rats after implantation of two types of bioactive glass. Sixteen adult Wistar rats (body weight of 300g) were divided into two groups: PerioGlas (PG) (n=8) and BioGran (BG) (n=8). Unicortical bone defects with 3-mm diameter were performed in both tibiae of the animals and filled with two types of glass particles. The rats were then sacrificed at 7, 14, 30 and 60 days, and the ...

Water erosion is one of the main environmental issues nowadays, which results in the decline of soil quality, reducing the productive potential of crops and also causing water pollution, decreasing water availability for human supply. Thus, this study aimed to estimate soil losses related to the rainfall seasonality in the Verdinho River basin, located in the Brazilian Cerrado . Here, we gathered remote sensing products , cartographic and rainfall databases to provide the parameters of the Universal ...

In this paper, the dynamic performance of a controlled high building is numerically investigated considering the effects of different numbers of mass dampers and their interconnection. The numerical analysis is conducted on a 20-story building considered as a shear frame and reduced to an SDOF system by means of the mode-superposition method. The system is subjected to harmonic load. Numerical searches are conducted based on the Min. Max. procedure in order to obtain efficient interconnected (I) ...

Abstract Background The compound oenothein B (OenB), which is isolated from the leaves of Eugenia uniflora , a Brazilian Cerrado plant, interferes with Paracoccidioides yeast cell morphology and inhibits 1,3-β-D-glucan synthase ( Pb FKS1) transcript accumulation, which is involved in cell wall synthesis. In this work we examined the gene expression changes in Paracoccidioides yeast cells following OenB treatment in order to investigate the adaptive cellular responses to drug stress. The transformation of waste oils and fats into biofuels attracts great interest due to the low cost of these materials. The thermal and/or catalytic cracking of oils and fats is an alternative route to the classic transesterification process of biodiesel production when the raw material has low quality.
