Suzanne Jackson,

A review of 20 patients with ovarian dysgerminoma in the records of the Christie Hospital is made. The more interesting clinical features are described and two members of one family with the disease are reported. The results of treatment are encouraging, particularly the high success rate achieved in the irradiation of post-operative recurrence.

Certain phthalate esters and hypolipidemic agents are known to induce morphological and biochemical changes in the liver of rodents, which have been associated with an increased incidence of hepatocellular tumors in these species. There is evidence that hypolipidemic agents do not induce these effects in either subhuman primates or man. We have utilized the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to isolate a 3.5 kilobase pair (kb) genomic fragment that encodes the additional extracellular domain unique to the epithelial isoform of CD44 (CD44E). Nucleotide sequence was determined for this complete region and sequence comparison to our previously determined CD44R1 and CD44R2 cDNA sequences revealed the R region to be comprised of three exons of 102 bp, 90 bp, and 204 bp. Northern blot analysis of CD44 expressing cell lines confirmed the presence ...

Assessing the biodiversity of macroinvertebrate fauna in freshwater ecosystems is an essential component of both basic ecological inquiry and applied ecological assessments. Aspects of taxonomic diversity and composition in freshwater communities are widely used to quantify water quality and measure the efficacy of remediation and restoration efforts. The accuracy and precision of biodiversity assessments based on standard morphological identifications are often limited by taxonomic resolution and ...

The evolution of health promotion in Canada between 1986 and 2006 is characterized by three major eras: Health Promotion in the Limelight, 1986-1992, Health Promotion Behind the Scenes, 1993-2003, and Health Promotion Restaged, 2003-2006. These eras are illustrated using the Canadian Heart Health Initiative as an example. The first era, backed by strong federal government leadership and support, was a progressive time of developing concepts, collaborations and infrastructure for health promotion ...

Different sets of competencies in public health, global health and research have recently emerged, including the Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada (CCPHC). Within this context, we believe it is important to articulate competencies for global health practitioners–educators and researchers that are in addition to those outlined in the CCPHC. In global health, we require knowledge and skills regarding: north-south power dynamics, linkages between local and global health problems, and the ...

Huber and colleagues rightly challenge the validity, in the 21st century, of the World Health Organization’s definition of health.1 Adaptation and self management are important qualities, but a contemporary definition should include health being a human right protected by certain entitlements and a resource for life that is affected by social, political, economic, and environmental factors.2 …

Taxonomic identification of benthic macroinvertebrates is critical to protocols used to assess the biological integrity of aquatic ecosystems. The time, expense, and inherent error rate of species-level morphological identifications has necessitated use of genus- or family-level identifications in most large, statewide bioassessment programs. Use of coarse-scale taxonomy can obscure signal about biological condition, particularly if the range of species tolerances is large within genera or families. ...
