Objective. The authors aimed to investigate the incidence and outcomes of acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (AUGIB) and to examine the role of drugs potentially associated with AUGIB. Methods. The study was prospective, population-based and consisted of all patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (UGE), during the year of 2010 at the National University Hospital of Iceland. Drug intake of NSAIDs, low-dose aspirin (LDA), warfarin, SSRIs and bisphosphonates prior to GIB was prospectively ...

Objectives To investigate the incidence and outcomes of acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding (ALGIB) in a population-based setting and examine the role of drugs potentially associated with GIB. Methods The study was prospective and population based. The cohort included all patients who underwent colonoscopy during the year 2010 at the National University Hospital of Iceland. Indications for endoscopies and drug history were recorded in a systematic manner. The inclusion criteria were overt bleeding ...

We report the application of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for on-line chemical analysis in a primary aluminum smelter. Measurements were performed for fourteen trace elements (Fe,Si,Cu,Ni,Ti,Cr,Mn,Sn,V,Ga,Zn,Sb,Mg,Na) and correlated with laboratory measurements on corresponding solid samples. Real-time quantification of trace elements down to ppm levels directly in the molten aluminum has been demonstrated for a number of elements (Cu,Cr,Mn,Sn). For elements Fe and Si, typically present ...

Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) can be expanded in vitro and differentiated towards osteogenic, chondrogenic or adipogenic lineages, making them an attractive source for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Chitinase-like-proteins (CLPs) belong to the family 18 glycosyl hydrolases and are believed to play a role in inflammation and tissue remodelling. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the aminosugar glucosamine on the expression of the CLP YKL-40 during osteogenic differentiation ...
